Everyone associated with the JCA,

whether an executive member, key worker,

host or supporter, would have to agree that

June is our most exciting month. At this time

each year, we are literally ‘counting down’

to the launch of another JCA Campaign

which will in turn bring to fruition months

of painstaking work and planning by our

professional staff and the hundreds of

dedicated JCA volunteers who support

their efforts.

For me, personally, this year’s Campaign

is of special significance as it will be my first

as JCA Appeal Chairman. That prospect is

both exhilarating yet daunting and many

challenges lie ahead if we are to achieve

this year’s Campaign target which has been

set at $10 million.

I am delighted to announce that the

Prime Minister, The Hon John Howard MP,

has accepted our invitation to attend the

CBD dinner where he will be presented

with the JCA’s inaugural Award for

Friendship and Commitment to the NSW

and ACT Jewish communities. His presence

alone should truly make this occasion a

night to remember.

I am equally delighted that the Federal

Treasurer,The Hon Peter Costello MP will be

joining us once again by agreeing to address

our Major Donors division dinner.

I am confident 2005 will see the JCA

continue spiralling to success as our coming

campaign has so much to offer by way of

speakers,entertainment,and other activities

which will command the Community’s

attention and interest.

Our principal guest-speaker is David

Harris, the Executive Director of one of

America’s leading and most effective

representative organisations, the American

Jewish Committee. In April this year I had

the pleasure of meeting David for the first

time when I visited New York, and spent a

fascinating hour or so conferring with him

at his office in mid-town Manhattan.

David Harris possesses all the qualities

one would expect to find in a modern day

international Jewish leader and lobbyist who

has walked the world’s stage for more than

two decades - he is sophisticated, highly

intelligent and politically savvy. David is a

man of both ideas and action and I believe

that the freshness of his views in relation to

Jews, Judaism and the Jewish World will

stimulate this community enormously.

He will speak at four separate JCA

fundraisers later in the month,

commencing with the Prominent Leaders’

Supper on 19 June and I urge you to make

every effort to hear him at the appropriate

JCA function.

Apart from fundraising during the

campaign itself, I want to emphasise how

important JCA’s Specified Funds program is

as a means of assisting the JCA to build-up

its designated funding base to the level

required to sustain our communal needs.

Increasing this program will, in effect, give

the community its own form of

superannuation and make us less

dependent on the Annual Appeal which is,

of course, subject to the ebbs and flows of

the general economy.

For me, our new campaign theme “We

are Family” sums up what the JCA is all

about - one big warm extended Jewish

family whose members all work together to

help each other for the benefit of the

Family as a whole. During the months of

Campaign that lie ahead, I look forward to

personally welcoming you, as I would a

family member, at one or more of the many

JCA events that we have planned, and I

know that together we can make 2005 one

of JCA’s best Campaign years ever.

Peter Ivany has announced that the PrimeMinister, the Hon John Howard MP, will bepresented with a unique honour duringthis year’s Campaign, revealing that MrHoward will receive the JCA’s inauguralAward for Friendship & Commitment to theJewish Community at its annual CBD Dinner.

“This special JCA accolade to Mr Howard reflectsthe close, warm and enduring relationship he hasenjoyed with the Jewish Community during his longand distinguished career in Australian public life,”Mr Ivany said.

“Mr Howard’s record of sensitivity and support onissues which affect the quality of life and specialneeds of the Jewish community - like Jewish day-school education and the need to combat racismand anti-Semitism - is without peer among hisParliamentary colleagues. We are most fortunatethat these unique qualities have been evidentthroughout his 31 year career as the FederalMember for Bennelong.

“Throughout his time in office, Mr Howard’scommitment and steadfast support for Israel hasnever wavered. Indeed, he is one of the very fewWestern political leaders who has, over decades, displayed an ongoing and deeply held understandingof the existential issues Israel has faced, and continuesto face.

“During his time in Parliament, the Prime Ministerhas visited the Jewish State on at least threeoccasions, both in Government and Opposition.

“More recently, he has shown great courage injoining the international war on terror which hasfurther confirmed his reputation as a major playeron the global political stage,” Mr Ivany added.

“I can think of no more deserving recipient of this prestigious inaugural award for Friendship andCommitment to our Community than the Prime

Minister,” Mr Ivany said.John Howard’s involvement and life-long association

with the Sydney Jewish Community began in the late1950s. Then, as a Sydney University Law student, hewas employed as an Articled Clerk, working under theguidance and supervision of the legendary Sydneysolicitor and communal personality, Myer Rosenblum.

Mr Howard went on to complete his articles withRosenblum & Co and as part of his professionalduties he was required to deliver legal documentsto the offices of the Australian Jewish WelfareSociety (now JCA constituent JewishCare), situatedin the Jewish Community Centre in Darlinghurst.

It was during these visits that a young JohnHoward often came into close contact with manypost-war Jewish refugees, most of whom wereHolocaust survivors.

This award to Mr Howard will not be the firstoccasion on which he has received formal recognitionof his major and continuing contribution to thewellbeing of the Jewish people. In January 2002, hewas presented with the American Jewish Committee(AJC)’s most valued international award, its AmericanLiberties Medallion, at a special ceremony held inNew York City.

Interestingly, David Harris, the AJC’s ExecutiveDirector, who will be the Guest Speaker at the CBDDinner in Sydney, was present at that ceremony inNew York and spoke in tribute to the Australian PrimeMinister on that occasion.

The special presentation of the Friendship &Commitment Award to Mr Howard will be made byJCA Honorary Life Governor and Past President, HalGoldstein AM OBE and Mr Peter Wise, President, JCA.

David Harris, the Executive Director of theAmerican Jewish Committee and one ofAmerican Jewry’s most distinguished anddynamic leaders will launch this year’s JCA campaign.

During his visit he will address four separate Campaignfundraisers including appearances at ProminentLeaders, Metro, CBD and North Shore events.

Since his appointment in 1990 as the professionalin charge of America’s most prestigious and powerfulJewish representative organistaions, David Harris hasoperated at the cutting edge of the internationalpublic affairs arena, formulating policy and buildingpolitical alliances which best serve his constituency.

In the course of his extensive career in Jewishcommunal service, he has travelled throughoutEurope, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin Americato monitor the condition of Jewish communities, combat anti-Semitism, advance Israel’s diplomaticstanding, and promote international human rightsand interreligious and interethnic understanding.

David Harris’ lifetime commitment to Jewishcauses commenced in the 1970s when he came toplay a crucial role in the international campaign tofree Soviet Jewry. His involvement at that time tookhim, at great personal risk, to the Soviet Union onseveral occasions during which he was twice detainedand later expelled by the Soviet authorities.

However, his efforts were instrumental inultimately allowing more than one million Soviet Jewsto emigrate to freedom in Israel and elsewhere.

In the mid 1980s David Harris also played acrucial diplomatic role in the negotiations which led the historic rescue to Israel of the remnant of the ancient Ethiopian Jewish community in whatwas known as “Operation Moses” when over 20,000members of this deprived minority were airlifted tosafety in the Jewish State.

While treading the global stage in advocating thecause of Israel and World Jewry, David Harris regularlymeets with World leaders like George W Bush, ArielSharon, Jacques Chirac and Vladimir Putin.

In January 2002 David Harris met with the Prime

dynamic US leader tospearhead 2005 JCA campaign

It all started in 1981 when the JCA ExecutiveDirector at the time, Pauline Moody, metPat Evans at a dinner party.

Pat was looking for a new focus in her life andPauline was looking for someone to help out at theJCA - predominantly to oversee the reorganisationof the NSW Jewish War Memorial Building inDarlinghurst and to manage the hiring out of theEta Saunders Room for functions. “There were somany Greek couples who booked that room forwedding receptions, that I would turn up for workon Monday morning to find doves flying around theceiling,” Pat recalls fondly.

Now, 24 years down the track and havingorganised countless JCA events, Pat is the JCA’sCampaign Director and has embraced the JewishCommunity as her adopted family. “I didn’t knowanyone who was Jewish, and I don’t think that I wasever really conscious of what ‘giving’ really means, before I joined the JCA,” Pat explains.

“I have the utmost respect and admiration for the many, many volunteers, the people who give so generously and those who I work with, who giveso much time and commitment to the Community.

I can honestly say that some of the most wonderfulpeople that I have ever met in the world have walkedthrough our office door.”

Her job is certainly not an easy one.Always workingat least a year ahead and meticulously coordinatingevery minute detail to ensure that each campaignfunction and event is a success, often sees Pat still ather desk into the wee hours, but she says that withall the tension and anxiety comes a great deal ofpassion and excitement.

Since Pat first started, the JCA’s volunteer basehas tripled and the organisation has broadened the number and scope of its constituent members.Pat is well aware of the continued need forCommunity support.

“The needs of our members increase every yearas do the demands on the JCA’s resources. It’s alwaysvery exciting to get a campaign up and running andit makes it all worthwhile when the fundraising is a success. Working with the JCA has taught me thetrue meaning of Tzedakah,” Pat says.

And for the future? Pat laughs as she contemplatesthe next 24 years! Right now, a long-awaited trip toIsrael is high on the agenda.

Demographic trends show that the fastestgrowing sector of the Community is the75+ population. Consequently, this ishaving a major impact on the demands foraged care and communal health services ingeneral. The JCA is working closely withJewishCare, the Montefiore Home andWolper Jewish Hospital, to ensure thatplans are in place to meet the future healthneeds of both the elderly and theCommunity as a whole.

The growth in demand for JewishCare’s agedservices has increased dramatically over the last 12 months.

The biggest challenge, according to ChiefExecutive Officer, Mark Schlosser, is to manage anaging population with chronic problems while, overwhelmingly, older people want to live at home.Currently, JewishCare provides 6-8 hours of in-homeassistance to 140 people each week. It’s predictedthat this will increase by 15-20 per cent over thenext few years with each person needing 10-12hours of care per week.

Helping family carers to find the support servicesand programs they need is one area that JewishCareis working on. This includes, offering respite for carersand reassessing volunteer programs with a view toimproving recruitment, training needs and support.

position to count on government funding to supportthe services we provide, the only people we can relyon is ourselves and the community” says Mark, adding: “The money that is provided to us by theJCA is well spent and you can count on us to workwith other organisations within the community tomake the best use of communal resources”.

Statistics from the Montefiore Home support thetendency for elderly people to want to remain intheir own homes as long as possible. Now,the averageage for entering hostel care - the Home’s lowestlevel of care - is 83, a trend that brings with it, a hostof new demands for the future.

“Because they are coming to Montefiore at anolder age, we have many more residents with higherclinical needs. This means that we have to havemore registered nurses in hostel-level care and italso leads to greater demands on our resources andfacilities at higher levels of care” explains ChiefExecutive Officer, Robert Orie.

Supporting a clearly identified demographicneed, the Montefiore’s new campus in Randwick, which is due to be completed early next year, willoffer 280 residential rooms with world classamenities and facilities. In addition, there will be amajor focus on dementia specific care, which hasbeen identified as a growing area of concern.

Several projects are being undertaken to ensurethe organisation can maintain the highest level ofaged care services into the future. These include a

research project with the University of New SouthWales on Clinical I.T. in Aged Care, and a liaison withthe Nursing Faculty at the University of Technology,Sydney, helping to develop programs and runningclinical modules at the Home.

Expanding community health services is alsohigh on the agenda for Wolper Hospital. Throughtheir own resources the hospital is intensifying itscommitment to screening for conditions that areuniquely threatening to our Community by addingtesting for four additional genetically inheriteddiseases to it’s well established Tay Sachs testingprogram which is conducted through the Day Schools.

As Chief Executive Harry Aizenberg explains:“wecan now test for Cystic Fibrosis, Fanconi Anaemia,Familial Dysautonomia and Canavan Disease andthe other big bonus is that it’s all done through one saliva sample. In cooperation with Academy BJEwe will also be sending out information to Jewishstudents in the State High Schools and inviting themto come to Wolper to be tested.”

This year, the Wolper is embarking on a fully self-funded initiative - the Wolper Cancer GeneticsProgram - which involves sponsoring the Institute ofOncology at Prince of Wales Hospital and providingnew laboratory testing, the establishment of asupport group, information evenings and bookletson cancer genetics including bowel cancer and inparticular breast and ovarian cancer.

On behalf of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Communal Appeal (JCA) it gives me pleasure topresent a summarised review of the affairs of the organisation for the financial year ended 30 April 2005.

GOVERNANCEJCA is the cooperative fundraising venture of the constituent organisations who together make upthe JCA family. It is constituted by way of a Trust Deed, with its day to day activities governed byprofessional staff and a number of lay leadership committees. Ultimate governance and authority lies in the hands of theconstituent organisations themselves, with each of their Presidents making up the Trustees of the Board of Governors. The financial information contained in this review is summarised from the unaudited operating accounts as at 30 April2005, with the formal audited accounts subject to Trustee approval later in the year. The Trustees recently appointedBorough Mazars as auditors following the retirement of Einfeld Symonds Vince who had served JCA well for many years.

INCOME AND EXPENDITUREThe year under review was again a busy and productive one and it is pleasing to report that the trend towards increasingdonor numbers and income has continued. Total income from all sources including donations, sponsorships, endowments, bequests, interest and unrealised gains on investments amounted to $14.382 million; and the number of donors supportingthe JCA totalled almost 7,000, an all time record. Fundraising activities were chaired by Barry Smorgon until late 2004 andJCA is indeed grateful to him for his many years of active involvement; and to the Appeal Executive for the excellent resultsthat they have delivered. After several years heading up the Major Gifts Division, Peter Ivany has now assumed theimportant role of Appeal Chair.

It is important to recognise that JCA income now falls into two distinct and separate categories.

Total expenditure for the period under review was tightly controlled and ended the year well within acceptable fundraisingbenchmarks and within JCA’s own budget. It should be noted that in addition to the fundraising activities, expenditureincludes amounts expended on communal planning and other activities undertaken on behalf of constituent organisations.

ALLOCATIONSAs the scale of JCA has increased, so too have the increased requirements of the constituent organisations. As a consequence, the process of allocating Annual Campaign Funds has become even more detailed and exhaustive and JCA is thankful to Phil Green, the 2004 Allocations Committee Chairman, and his committee for its dedicated work. The 2005 chairman is David Lowy AM.

The difficult question with allocations is not only determining how the annual campaign funds will be allocated; but alsodetermining which programs or activities will miss out because of a lack of funds.

Our President Reports

12 the JCA community source june issue

Peter Wise,President

Annual Campaign FundsThese are funds that arise from the annual communalcampaign and include sponsorships and investment income. After accounting for JCA’s operating expenditure andallowing for timing differences, these funds are distributedto constituent organisations annually through the JCAallocation process. There is no long term accumulation of Annual Campaign Funds.

Gross income from all sources for the year ended 30 April 2005 was $9.508 million.

Specified FundsThese funds are distinct and separate from annual campaignfunds. They facilitate the gifting of major additional fundsprimarily for specified activities undertaken by JCA constituentorganisations. There are a number of separate SpecifiedFunds, each with their own characteristics which ofteninclude donor designated components that are notavailable for immediate distribution.

Gross income from all sources for the year ended 30 April 2005 was $4.874 million.

Page 15: powerful ideas, passionate beliefs - …svc022.wic025v.server-web.com/Publications/Downloads/Source05_Ju… · ideas, passionate beliefs talking heads for the ... Bruce Wolpe, Sam

It should be noted that timing plays an important part in the allocation process as JCA is only able to allocate funds thathave been physically received. Amounts pledged by donors but not yet paid are not taken into consideration by theAllocations Committee. The allocations paid during the financial year under review are summarised in the following table:

Allocation by Sector - $000’s Annual Campaign Funds Specified FundsWelfare, Health, Family & Aged Services 2,308 380Jewish Day Schools 2,470 10Education Boards 862 0Adult & Young Adult Programs 413 0Communal Services & Security 1,715 0Total Allocations Paid 7,768 390

INVESTMENT COMMITTEEThe investment of funds is undertaken by the JCA Investment Committee in accordance with conservative policies set bythe Trustees. Under the current policy funds are invested both in managed funds and in term deposits. The committee ischaired by the Treasurer, who was Ron Ferster for most of the financial year. The incoming Treasurer is Stephen Green. Thecommittee comprises representation from the Trustees as well as other senior JCA personnel and co-opted members fromoutside the JCA organisational structure.

PLANNING AND PRIORITIES In recent years JCA has found itself more deeply involved in communal planning than was envisaged when the first tentativesteps were taken a decade ago to deal with some of the broader structural issues within our community. The planningfunction is seen by many as one of the key ingredients for an improved communal future.

Ably chaired by David Balkin who works closely with Jillian Segal and a small dedicated team, the activities of the Prioritiesand Planning Committee have accelerated during the last year as the complex issues surrounding the welfare, family andaged services sector have come under the microscope. At the same time, a review of the education sector has commenced, with a view towards bringing greater coordination, benefits and efficiencies to the education of our young. Other mediumand long term planning issues, including communal security, are also coming into focus.

CAPITAL AND BUILDINGRichard Scheinberg chaired the Capital and Building Committee during the year, assisted by Peter Philippsohn during theChairman’s absence overseas. This committee is charged with the responsibility of constantly reviewing the property andother physical assets held by constituent organisations together with their associated debt levels and proposals for buildingimprovements and additions. This committee also makes recommendations to the Trustees about which organisation (ifany) should be granted the right to conduct a Capital or Building Fund Appeal in the forthcoming year.

STATUS COMMITTEEThe Status Committee is chaired by Joachim Schneeweiss AM and is constituted primarily for the purpose of consideringapplications by organisations that wish to become parties to the JCA Trust Deed; and thus become JCA constituent members.Whilst JCA is desirous of broadening its base, it imposes rigorous conditions on organisations who wish to join, includingstrict standards of governance and financial management. No organisations were admitted during the year althoughthree organisations made formal application to become constituents and others have informally signalled their intentions.

COORDINATING COMMITTEE The snowballing and successful activities of the JCA have brought with them attendant complications in coordinatingthe diverse and important work of the various committees. The establishment of the JCA Coordinating Committee duringthe year, chaired by the President, has gone some way towards streamlining the various activities. Attended by the Chairsof the various committees together with key officeholders, the President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, andexecutive staff, the committee has rapidly become a forum for new and innovative thinking.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe JCA Board of Governors acknowledges and thanks all lay members of its committees and sub-committees for theirdedicated work, together with the large army of volunteers and hosts who together make JCA a unique, dynamic andsuccessful organisation.

JCA also acknowledges and thanks all of its executive staff, led by the CEO Lawrence Jackson, who together with his teamhas shown extraordinary commitment and dedication to the organisation.

CONCLUSIONUnder the unique JCA communal fundraising model, our constituent organisations participate in a cooperative venturein which they join together - and work together - to jointly run an annual combined communal appeal. Over nearly fourdecades JCA has grown, developed and refined what it does and how it does it.

Its success today is a testament to those few who originally had the vision and the foresight; it is a testament to thosecountless numbers who have so willingly devoted their time and their energy, and it is in no small part a testament tothe thousands of members of our community who year after year continue to support the JCA - thus recognising that by doing so they are playing an instrumental part in the betterment of our Jewish way of life.

Each year more people are being diagnosedwith Autism, putting enormous pressure onfamilies which struggle to provide the levelsof support and care needed. JewishCareand day schools are is stepping in to help.

“Many families are facing crisis situations and arepushed to the point of putting their children in the few facilities which have block beds and offer24-hour care.

“I would like to see JewishCare being able toprovide the Community with a facility whereparents can have a well-deserved break and feelconfident that their children are having fun as well,”Edward Birt, JewishCare’s Disability ServicesManager explains.

JewishCare supports families by undertakingcomprehensive needs assessments, identifyingwhere the gaps are, such as overnight care, andproducing a goal specific plan to fill the gaps.

Some of these gaps are filled by the day schoolsthrough individual learning programs. Thanks to aspecial JCA funding allocation of $85,000, a SpecialNeeds Centre has been set up at Moriah College, and the Emanuel School, Mt Sinai College, MasadaCollege and Academy BJE are all now equipped tooffer specialised care and services to children withspecial needs.

JewishCare runs successful group therapyprograms for parents where issues such asmanaging behaviour, education, medication andoptions for the future can be openly discussed in asupportive environment. The greatest need now isto find the resources to give more support to theparents of these children.

“In a world where people find parenting skillsdifficult in general, it is even more difficult to learn

how to cope with a child who has special needs, where previously there was a sense within theCommunity of ‘we can look after it ourselves.’Families are now opening up and it’s moreacceptable to ask for help. That’s one of the reasonswhy there is more demand for JewishCare’s servicesin this area,” Brit says.

This year is the 60th Anniversary of the endof WWII and the liberation of theconcentration camps in Europe. To markthis important event, the Sydney JewishMuseum has commissioned a commemorativefilm and created several temporaryexhibitions, which are being featured at theMuseum throughout the year.

The film - Liberation, Life and Lamingtons - wasrecently launched at a function held at MoriahCollege for survivors and their families. Organisedby the Museum in partnership with the Associationof Jewish Holocaust Survivors, the aim of thefunction was to bring families together andcelebrate the resilience of Jewish people, which isevident in today’s vibrant Sydney community.

Producer Robyn Gerber and Director MarkRadomsky created a magnificent documentarywhich takes the viewer through a rollercoaster ofemotions, from cringing to laughing and crying - butmost of all, it honours the human spirit. The title ofthe film says it all - Liberation, from the camps, Life,in Australia and Lamingtons, to show how much theAustralian icons represent freedom and democracyfor survivors.

The JCA’s Allocations Committee made a specialallowance of $50,000 to help co-fund this projectand ensure its success, thanks to the support andgenerosity of our donors.

The film was also the focus of the Museum’sparticipation in the Discovery After Dark Project.Organised by the NSW Premier’s Department, theproject involved major cultural institutions inSydney, staying open on a night in April from 7pmuntil midnight - over 400 people visited the SydneyJewish Museum that night.

On 8 May, NSW Premier Bob Carr opened anexhibition at the Museum called Through AustralianEyes. This exhibition features the works of Australianartist Alan Moore, who was present at the liberation

of Bergen-Belsen and the haunting drawings, neverbefore on public display, of daily life in a camp byBernard Slawic.

A series of letters written by Muriel Knox Doherty- an Australian nurse who was responsible for settingup a hospital at Bergen-Belsen after liberation arealso on display. Now aged 90 and living in Melbourne,Alan Moore was present at the opening where heand was reunited, after 60 years with Olga Horak,a survivor of the infamous camp and now aMuseum guide.

The Long Journey to Freedom is an exhibition thatwas launched on 29 May and highlights the personalstories and experiences of survivors who made thedecision to leave Europe and come to live in Australiaafter liberation. Homeless and stateless, many survivorsfelt like they didn’t belong anywhere. Through letters, documents, artifacts, postcards and photographs, this exhibition commemorates the emotional realityof liberation, the physical journey, and the firstreactions to a new home.

According to Sydney Jewish Museum President,John Roth,“The Museum ensures that the historicallessons of the Holocaust are passed on from generationto generation by being the public face of the NSWJewish Community in educating tens of thousandsof non-Jewish school children and adults each yearabout the ever present dangers of racial andreligious intolerance and prejudice.”

CEO Norman Seligman extended the SydneyJewish Museum’s thanks by saying,“we are grateful tothe JCA and its donors for making available additionalfunding towards our numerous activities andexhibitions commemorating the 60th anniversary of Liberation and Life in Australia. It is vital for thecommunity to support the JCA and thereby theimportant work of its constituents such as theSydney Jewish Museum.”

Following an approach from the JewishPeople Policy & Planning Institute (JPPPI)which operates under the auspices of theJewish Agency in Jerusalem, the JCA hasagreed to fund a study specifically relatingto Jewish eduction and continuity. Thesurvey will target parents of year five andsix school children attending secular andJewish schools in Australia.

The survey is currently being undertaken incooperation with Jewish day schools and Boards ofJewish education. Other communal groups are alsosupporting a drive to reach all eligible familiesthroughout the Jewish community.

It will provide essential data on the quality andrange of Jewish education currently available in the community as well as identifying barriers toattendance at Jewish day schools and the role beingfulfilled by these schools within the widereducational context.

The survey will also provide significant qualitativedata on the relationship between the type ofeduction received and its subsequent effect onintermarriage and long term participation in Jewishcommunal activities.

The JCA’s involvement in this pilot project willprovide the JCA and its constituents with much neededinformation to assist in fostering Jewish continuityand communal development. Similar surveys arealready underway in South Africa and Canada.

The data gathered will be analysed by Dr GaryEckstein, the JCA’s honorary demographer.Consolidatedresults will be shared with the schools and othereducational institutions who have assisted with theproject as well as the JPPPI in Jerusalem.

Involvement and funding of this survey by the JCAis yet another tangible application of its growing rolein communal research, planning and development.

The specially convened JCA committee which isoverseeing the survey and pilot study comprises Dr Gary Eckstein, Peter Philippsohn, Justice StephenRothman,Richard Scheinberg and JCA Chief ExecutiveOfficer,Lawrence Jackson. Brian Fine,Managing Directorof market research company JD Power Australia, is alsoproviding pro bono assistance.

Commenting on this initiative, JCA GovernorPeter Philippsohn, who is currently overseeing themanagement of this project said “this is a uniqueopportunity for parents of school age children tohave a say on what they want to see in their children’seducation and for our community to respond.”

Several years ago, in a major initiative, the JewishCommunal Appeal launched a new fundraisingconcept that foreshadowed a growing trend inAustralian philanthropy, when it established itsSpecified Funds Program.

By utilising the unique facility which Specified Fundsoffer, additional contributions to a special purpose orproject that falls within the broad framework of servicesprovided by the JCA family of organisations can be made.

Those who choose to endow the JCA’s Specified FundsProgram have the satisfaction of seeing a specific causeprosper or a particular project brought to fruition, whilestill being able to enjoy the tax benefits associated withtheir gift.

The flexibility of these schemes can accommodate anyspecial interest a JCA donor may have or may wish to developin relation to a particular JCA-funded communal organisation.

It is intended that Specified Fund endowments bemade in addition to the donor’s contribution to annualJCA campaigns and represents a separate commitmentfrom the donor to the Appeal.

The establishment and management of Specified Fundswill allow the JCA to accrue a substantial pool of fundingwhich can be disbursed over a significant period of time orin perpetuity, which will greatly assist in securing the long-term viability of the Jewish community and its vitalinfrastructure through the constituency of the JCA.

If you require any information on how to create a JCASpecified Fund, please contact JCA CEO, Lawrence Jackson,on (02) 9360 2344.

The JCA currently administers the followingSpecified Funds:

JCA ABEL FAMILY FUNDThe JCA Abel Family Fund was established by theAbel Family to provide support for welfare, familyand aged services, as well as the development ofwomen in the community. To date $1,200,000has been endowed.

Renee Ferster Levy and her sisters FeliciaHuppert and Alexi Ferster Marmot, createda JCA Specified Fund - the Lotben Fund - topreserve the memory of their parents,Lotka and Bernard, in a way which wouldrepresent the values they passed on totheir children.

A very loving and giving family, Tzedakah andJewish traditions were always a strong part of theirlives and the Ferster children were taught to respectand appreciate other cultures and religions. Lotkaand Bernard were also fantastic communicatorsbetween generations and were always very much infavour of intergenerational projects.

In 2004, the JCA Lotben Fund was used tofinance Academy BJE’s Project Heritage Program. Acomprehensive and incredibly rewarding programwhere year six and seven students are introduced to a ‘Living Historian’ and then put together a projectbased on that Historian’s life.

The students chose from a variety of mediathrough which to present their work such as an essay, artwork or drama presentation. Thanks to the FersterFamily’s generosity, participation in the ProjectHeritage Program in 2004 was increased from 4 to20 schools, and Academy BJE is setting up a webcomponent to benefit children in remote areas andolder historians who are unable to travel.

Renee Ferster Levy says: “It’s very exciting to seethat this fund in our parents’ name is ensuring thepreservation of stories and the intercommunicationof generations and I would encourage others to createspecial funds that they would find equally rewarding.”

The JCA Michael Faktor Leadership Fund wasoriginally set up to promote and develop Jewishleadership. Now the fund is used to sponsor the full-day JCA-Network Michael Faktor LeadershipConference, which is held annually at Shalom College.

Attracting over 100 attendees, the conferenceprogram is designed to foster all sorts of leadership

training and workshops, from issues such as mediarelations and website development to Israeli politicsand Yiddishkeit.

“All of the applicants have demonstrated someform of involvement in leadership programs,”explainsRoni Faktor, daughter of the Late Michael Faktor.“Most of them are in their early to mid 20s, alreadyhave an affiliation with a community related groupor project and are seeking to promote and developtheir leadership skills. The conference has a pluralisticfocus and brings together youth from all sections ofthe community. We believe that by investing in theadvancement of the leadership skills in our youth, they in turn will re-invest their expertise in thecommunity and we will all reap the benefits”.

As German researcher Ulrich Baumann siftedthrough 2,500 documents and pictures atthe Holocaust Museum in Washington, hestumbled across a set of striking photosand testimony given to Steven Spielberg’sShoah Foundation.

The photos and testimony belonged to Sabinavan der Linden (formerly Wolanski), a Polish-bornHolocaust survivor he tracked down to Sydney.

Dr Baumann was working on an informationcentre associated with a memorial to the six millionJews murdered in the Holocaust, unveiled in Berlinlast month. Fifteen countries were to be representedat the centre and he wanted to include Mrs van derLinden’s family.

“I was very moved. I was amazed that that wasgoing to happen and my family would be includedin this information centre,” Mrs van der Linden said.

The controversial memorial has been six years inthe making. On 25 June,1999 the German parliamentpassed a resolution to build a “Memorial to theMurdered Jews of Europe”.

Last month that became a reality. Designed byNew York architect Peter Eisenman, the memorialcomprising 2,750 concrete pillars, was erected in thecentre of Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate.

When it was officially dedicated on 10 May,Mrs vander Linden was the only Holocaust survivor to addressthe crowd, her husband, children and grandchildrenin the audience.

When she was told in January she would be the only survivor to speak at the opening, she saidshe was “absolutely overwhelmed” and she toldorganisers it would be a great honour.

Among the victims commemorated in the memorialare Mrs van der Linden’s parents and brother.

She was just 12 when her mother perished in theBelzec death camp.

“My father and brother were executed by firingsquad two years later,” Mrs van der Linden said. “Iwas 12 when I lost my mother and 14 when I lost mywhole family.”

After liberation, family friends took her in and

she went to school in the then Soviet Union. By1948 she had married and was living in Paris beforeimmigrating to Australia 55 years ago.

Over the years, Mrs van der Linden has returnedto Germany several times. She was a key witness forthe prosecution in the trial of SS men charged withexecuting her father and brother in 1967.

Mrs van der Linden does not hold the currentgeneration responsible for their predecessors’ evilacts. But in the past decade, as the number ofHolocaust survivors continues to dwindle, Mrs vander Linden has made a point of discussing herhistory in the hope that it is never repeated.

She is a member of the NSW Jewish Board ofDeputies’ speaker service and a generous benefactorof the JCA. In 2003, she created the JCA Habermanand Kulawicz Specified Fund in honour of her lostrelatives. She had a particular interest in supportingunderprivileged Jewish students and to developprograms for Jewish teenagers and young adults.

“My generation is dying out,”she said.“I’m 74 yearsold. What happens after we have gone? It’s extremelyimportant that we teach the young people. I’ve alwaysfelt very strongly about it. Hopefully it will preventother terrible things happening.”
