5. Using the Galileo Controller

The Galileo controller is available in two versions, Galileo-1 and Galileo-2. Bothversions are used for PowerExchange 18/36.

COMPSCSI

SEL+

Figure 5-1 Front of the Controller (Galileo-1)

Galileo-1 is equipped with a Fast Narrow SCSI-2 interface designed for thestandard DPS 7000 platform, but can be reconnected to the new DPS 7000/XTA(Diane) platform.

When connected to a DPS 7000 platform, Galileo-1 emulates a standard 8 mmsequential backup peripheral – Device Class CT/M6.

When connected to a DPS 7000/XTA platform, Galileo-1 emulates either astandard 8 mm sequential backup peripheral – Device Class CT/M6 or a standard½-inch cartridge drive – Device Class CT/36T, according to user configuration.

Galileo-2 is equipped with a Wide Ultra SCSI interface specifically designed forthe new DPS 7000/XTA (Diane) platform.

When connected to a DPS 7000/XTA platform, Galileo-2 emulates either astandard 8 mm sequential backup peripheral – Device Class CT/M6 or a standard½-inch cartridge drive – Device Class CT/36T, according to user configuration.

Galileo controller performance is not reliant on the host system for continuousstreaming and is therefore highly effective for real-time data or log file recording.

IMPORTANT:PowerExchange 18/36 is delivered pre-configured and ready for use.Configuration is only to be carried out by qualified Bull Support technicians.

The Select key is used to perform many of the operations described in thischapter. In Figure 5-1 and 5-2, this key is identified by its abbreviation SEL. Inthe rest of this chapter, this key is referred to by its full name Select.

The controller microcode version is V4.0 for Galileo-1 and S4.0 for Galileo-2.

Four LEDs are situated on the bottom left of the controller front panel:

• The top left green LED indicates that the controller is powered on.

• The top right green LED, marked COMP, is not used in this configuration.

• The bottom right green LED, marked SCSI, indicates data transfer activity onthe SCSI buses. It is illuminated during all direct memory access cyclesrequired by the SCSI buses.

The bottom left red LED indicates faulty operation when illuminatedcontinuously. It also lights up during the external synchronization attempt, limited to10 seconds, for a general controller reset request.

5.1.2 Galileo-2

Three LEDs are situated on the left of the controller front panel:

• The top amber LED, marked XFER, indicates activity on the SCSI buses. It isilluminated during all data transfers subsequent to a SCSI command.

• The middle blue LED, marked ON, indicates that the controller is powered on.

• The bottom red LED indicates faulty operation when illuminated continuously. It also lights up during the external synchronization attempt, limited to 10seconds, for a general controller reset request.

5.2 Using the Keys in the Normal Mode

In the normal mode, the "+" and Select keys are used to display configuration dataand to perform certain trouble-shooting actions.

The "+" key is used to successively display various configuration messages andprompts for action. The display remains unchanged while the "+" key is active andreturns to normal when the key has been inactive for 5 seconds.

IMPORTANT:It is mandatory for "critical" actions to be validated by pressing the Select key andto be confirmed via the same Select key. No risks are attached to pressing the "+"key.

CAUTION:In the event of a power failure while saving to the nonvolatile memory, thecontroller microcode may be permanently altered. This condition is detectedduring the auto-test. To guard against this eventuality, the controller has asecond microcode, referred to as the backup firm.

The backup firm microcode is automatically selected in the event of a normalmicrocode defect and can be manually selected by validating the “+” key duringthe startup sequence (at power on or after reset).

At the end of the configuration phase and according to which microcode is active, the controller copies the active microcode and the configuration to the othermicrocode. It then displays either Save firm->backup to update the backupmicrocode when the normal microcode is active, or Restore backup firm toregenerate a normal microcode when the backup microcode is active.

IMPORTANT:You are advised to copy the normal microcode to the backup microcode at theend of the installation procedure in order to dispose of the appropriate backupconfiguration.

CAUTION:In the event of an incident when modifying the backup microcode, thecontroller will be unusable until repaired by the manufacturer.
