• Petrol is extremely flammable and can be explosive in certain conditions. Risk of severe burns or death.

o Stop engine and allow to cool for at least two minutes before refuelling.

o Always fill fuel tank outdoors or in a well ventilated area.

o Do not overfill the fuel tank and remember to allow for expansion of the fuel.

o If there is a fuel spillage, wait for it to evaporate before starting engine.

o Check fuel lines, fuel tanks, caps and other fuel fittings regularly for signs of wear or cracks. Replace if necessary.

o Keep fuel away from open flames, sparks, heat and other sources of ignition.

o When Storing fuel or equipment with fuel in tank.

Store away from furnaces, stoves and appliance

that have pilot lights such as water heaters and any

other sources of ignition as they can ignite fuel vapors.

• Exhaust emmisions contain carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can kill you in minutes. You cannot see it, smell it or taste it. If you start to feel dizzy, weak or nauseous while using this product TURN ENGINE OFF AND GET FRESH AIR IMMEDIATELY. Seek medical attention as you may have carbon monoxide poisoning.

o Only operate this product outside, away from doors, windows, vents or other places where carbon monoxide gas could quickly build up.

• Moving parts of the engine can entangle hands,

clothing, hair or jewellery.

o Keep hands and feet away from moving parts and tie up long hair.

o Operate equipment with guards in place, replace damaged guards if required.

o Do not wear loose fitting clothes, or accessories that could become entangled.

• Engines, especially mufflers, can become extremely hot whilst running. They can cause severe burns and nearby combustible materials such as brush, leaves and grass etc. can catch fire.

o Allow engine, muffler and associated parts to cool completely before touching or storing.

o Remove all debris from muffler and cylinder area before and after use.• Before servicing, repairs or adjustments:

o Remove spark plug cap and keep it separated from the spark plug.

o Disconnect the battery at the negative terminal (engines with electric start)

o Always use the correct tools when servicing and carrying out adjustments.

o Do not alter the governor, governor spring, links or other parts to increase engine speed.

o We strongly recommend that only genuine spare parts are used in the service and maintenance of this engine. Poor quality replacement parts can cause injury and/or damage to the engine that may void warranty.

Genuine spare parts are available from your nearest PowerBOSS agent.

3.2 ENGINE CONTROLS

The throttle control governs the speed of the engine and is usually fitted to the equipment this engine is supplied with. Consult your equipment manual to identify the location and operation of the control.

Controls for the throttle will normally be marked:

Choke. Place control in this position when starting from cold.

Fast. Place control in this position for maximum engine speed and operation.

Slow. Place control in this position for idle speed.

4.1 OIL RECOMMENDATIONS

This engine may have been shipped without oil. Oilcapacity can be found in the Specifications section ofthis manual.

We strongly advise the use of PowerBOSS certified oilsor a detergent oil classified SF-SG, do not use specialadditives.

Check oil before every use and every 5 hours or daily.

Always select the right oil for the temperature rangeyour engine will be operating in (see chart below).

WARNING

• The use of multi-viscosity oils in hot conditions can result in higher than normal oil consumption. Check oil more often when operating in these conditions.

• Do not mix oils of different brands or specifications.

• Below 5°C, use of SAE30 oil can result in engine damage or hard starting due to inadequate lubrication.

4.2 CHECKING /ADDING OIL

• Ensure the engine is level.

• Clean and remove any debris from around oil filler cap and dipstick.

• Unscrew oil filler cap and dipstick, wipe with a clean cloth.

• Insert the oil filler cap and dipstick without screwing it down.

• Remove the oil filler cap and dipstick, check that the oil level is between the “ADD” and “FULL” marks on the dipstick.

• If oil is required, slowly add oil into the engine oil fill. DO NOT OVERFILL. Allow one minute before checking oil level again.

• Replace and tighten oil filler cap and dipstick.

4.3 FUEL

PETROL AND ITS VAPOURS ARE EXTREMELYFLAMABLE AND EXPLOSIVE. RISK OF SEVERE BURNS ORDEATH.

Minimum Fuel Requirements

• A good quality, clean, unleaded petrol.

• Minimum of 90 RON (Octane). ULP91 within Australia.

• Petrol with up to 10% ethanol is acceptable (E10)

• Do not mix oil in the petrol or use unapproved petrol (such as E15 or E85), these can cause damage to engine components and will not be covered under warranty.

High Altitude

The maximum power output of this engine is reduced ataltitudes above 1500 meters.

• Refit the fuel cap.

• If there is a fuel spillage, wait for it to evaporate before starting the engine.

4.4 STARTING THE ENGINE

The equipment this engine is fitted to may haveadditional requirements for starting the engine. It isrecommended that you read and familiarise yourselfwith the equipment manual supplied before attemptingto start this engine.

Cold Start

• Turn the fuel tap to open (if present).

• Move the throttle control to the choke position.

• Turn the starter key until engine starts. If the engine has not started after 5 seconds release the key and wait 10 seconds before trying again.

• As the engine warms up (usually a few seconds) move the throttle control off of the choke position to the correct operating speed.

• If the engine does not start after repeated attempts, contact you nearest PowerBOSS agent.

Warm Start

Choke is not usually necessary for a warm start. Repeat the steps for a cold start but with the throttle control set to the fast position instead of the choke position.

4.5 WHILST OPERATING

• For optimal performance, operate engine at full speed when performing work.

Do not operate on inclines of more than

20° to prevent damage to the engine.

NOTE

• Before installing the new oil filter, lightly lubricate the oil filter gasket with clean engine oil. Ensure the mating flange surface on the cylinder block is clean and free of debris.

• Install the new oil filter by hand and tighten until the oil filter gasket contacts the flange on the engine. Tighten a further ½ to ¾ turns.

• Add oil, see section Adding Oil.

• Start and run the engine, check for leaks as the engine warms up.

• Stop the engine and wait for 2 minutes, check the oil level. It should be at the full mark indicated on the dipstick.

Adding Oil

For oil capacity see page 8 for Specifications.

Follow instructions in sections 4.1 and 4.2 when adding oil to the engine.

5.3 AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE

Never start or run the engine without theair filter assembly fitted. Do not use pressurised air or solvents to clean the filter as these can cause damageto the filter.

• Clear the area around the air filter cover of any debris.

• Unscrew the two knobs holding the air filter cover in place and remove cover (¼ turn cap for 18HP version).

• Carefully remove air filter ensuring that no dust or debris enters the intake.

• Remove the sponge pre-cleaner from the filter fitted to the engine.

NOTE

WARNING

WARNING

• Gently tap the filter on a hard surface to loosen and remove debris. Replace the air filter if it is excessively dirty.

• Clean the sponge pre-cleaner in liquid detergent and water, allow to fully dry before putting back onto the air filter. Do not oil the pre-cleaner.

• Refit the air filter, air filter cover and securely tighten the knobs on the air filter cover.

5.4 FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT

PETROL AND ITS VAPOURS ARE EXTREMELYFLAMABLE AND EXPLOSIVE. RISK OF SEVERE BURNS ORDEATH. IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED THAT THEEQUIPMENT IS RETURNED TO A POWERBOSSAUTHORISED DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE FUELFILTER.
