City of DresdenCuts costs for SAP applications by 30 percent by migrating to IBM DB2 database software The need:City of Dresden IT and Organization Services wanted to take advantage of the latest generation of SAP software, which requires Unicode support. Introducing Unicode tends to increase data volumes and storage costs, yet the department was also aiming to reduce the costs of running its SAP applications.

The solution: Working with IBM, City of Dresden IT and Organization Services migrated its SAP databases from Oracle to IBM DB2, running on IBM AIX on IBM Power servers, and migrated to Unicode. To improve performance and cut data volumes, the organization enabled IBM DB2 row and index compression features. The benefits:Reduced storage space for SAP databases by one third, achieving yearly cost savings of about 25 percent in the database environment. Improved backup times for SAP databases and enhanced both SAP and general application performance through the use of IBM DB2 compression features. Achieved time savings of up to 30 percent for release upgrades and substantially reduced downtime due to the simplicity of IBM DB2 upgrades. The optimal combination of IBM AIX, IBM DB2 and SAP applications requires almost no technical intervention to maintain performance. We are very happy with the rock-solid reliability of the new DB2 database solution. Constantia Hueck Folien provides SAP shared services for the whole Constantia Flexibles group with IBM POWER7 technology

Banking/GMU/LatviaBusiness challenge: Constantia Flexibles Group chose its subsidiary company, Constantia Hueck Folien, to act as the SAP Competence Center for the entire enterprise. As a result, the SAP environment managed by Constantia Hueck Folien more than doubled in size, from seven to fifteen SAP instances, and the company needed to find an infrastructure that could scale to meet its needs.Solution:The Constantia Hueck Folien IT team worked with PROFI, an IBM Premier Business Partner, to consolidate from three IBM POWER5 servers to just two new IBM Power 750 servers, each with two IBM POWER7 processors. The servers are clustered using IBM PowerHA to maximize availability, and use IBM PowerVM Live Partition Mobility to enable server maintenance without taking SAP systems offline. They connect to IBM System Storage N5300 disk systems, which act as a high-performance storage cluster.

Benefits: The new infrastructure is capable of supporting SAP for the whole Constantia Flexibles group, with headroom for future growth. Even though SAP workload will more than double, the introduction of energy-efficient IBM POWER7 processors has enabled a 33 percent reduction in physical server footprint saving electricity and space. POWER7 processors enable SAP applications to respond 50 percent faster, and batch processes run 25-30 percent faster, giving users rapid access to data. "The IBM Power Architecture has once again proved its value as a high-performance, highly available platform for SAP applications. We are confident that the Power 750 servers will give us the capacity we need to grow our business over the next two years and beyond."
