Cliff runner up to Elvis in Three Sections.

Are Pop Polls any indication of the truefeelings of the fans? That is what weasked ourselves many times before weeven considered the idea of the "PopWeekly" Pop Poll. It apparently wasn'tjust easy enough for anyone to say thatCliff was No. l singer in Great Britain orthat Elvis made the best records or TheBeatles were the group who everyone saidwere top. Did the polls show anythingthat could be considered authentic?

Well, we decided to go ahead with thepoll anyway. But not like the othermusicals. We didn't want to haveexactly the same sections for a start. We wanted something completely differ-ent and we got it. We had sectionsheaded as you can see "Most ReadArtiste." Not only was this a good ideafor readers to see whether or not otherreaders liked reading about the samestars but it also gave a us pointer at"Pop Weekly" as to who we shouldfeature in the magazine.

Then we had the section headed"Best -Liked Photographed Artiste"another section which other pop papershave never carried. This too gave us anidea who you liked to have pictured in"Pop Weekly." It was in a way, animpossible situation on sonic of the polls.Should we have the best group poll?We decided not to, although this causeda howl of discontent amongst many"Pop Weekly" readers. But after seeingPolls in all the other papers, we realisedthat it was going to be either The Beatlesor The Stones topping the chart, andthat the other eight chart placing%wouldn't have sufficient interest.

One of our most popular poll sectionswas the "World's Most Likely One -HitWonder." The Honeycombs as you cansee took that honour (or dishonour?),and it proved that fans and readersknow instinctively when a group arejust lucky.and when they are talented.

Reflections on Our Pop PollFor we too believe, with all our many

years of pop music experience that TheHoneycombs were lucky and were notespecially talented when they reachedthe No. I slot with their disc. Have IThe Right proved to be their first andlast hit.

One thing which we pointed out earlier, and I must point out vet again, just in casesome of you may think the charts weretoo much in favour of Elvis. The ElvisPresley Official Fan Club of Great Britainworked extremely hard as we know tomake Elvis top in every section. HadThe Beatles. The Kinks, The Stones, TheDave Clark Fire Fan Clubs and all theother top -name singers and groups'members worked half as hard the resultsmay have looked a lot different. A lotdepends on Polls-but a lot also dependson how well organised Fan Club membersare.

It's getting to the point in this countrywhere Fan Clubs can be so big and sostrong that they can virtually dictate totheir fans that a singer's record mustbe bought and get into the charts, andit works.

The stars who condemn their FanClubs or can't be bothered should lookagain at the results of the poll. Cliff andElvis fared exceptionally well. Mainlybecause they have two Fan Clubs whichare very strong.

The idea that anyone can get awaywith hit records on gimmicks alone hasbeen shown to be false by these pollsections. Fans have also shown in nouncertain terms what they consider tobe the best singles issued in 1964 andthe first two are a poke in the eye for El'sBritish record company. For the firsttwo singles voted as the best issued in1964 have turned out to be both 'B'sides.

I was disappointed that both TheBeatles' and The Stones' fans, who areusually so ardent about their groups, didn't push more votes in. The Beatleshave, like The Stones, been taking muchtoo much criticism lately, and have nothad the chance to reply.

The polls have proved one thing. That Pop Polls are a good indication ofthe country's true feeling towardsartistes.

If only some of the stars would devoteas much time to their fans as the fansdo to Pop Polls perhaps they wouldbase enjoyed bigger successes this time.

Next weeks "Pop Weekly" willcarry features on The Poll Winners,

Elvis! Cliff! Beatles! Brendaand MOODY BLUES

and the following week a selectionof Readers opinions on the results-Send yours in NOW.

T P---------IBMTWENTY1The Righteous Brothers caused astir when their version of You've Lost ThatLovin' Feeling shot past Cilia Black'sversion.2The Kinks could be this year's mostunexpected chart -toppers. The one wepredicted might make No. 1 could do justthat. Tired is one of their best singles.3The Moody Blues, having hit theNo. 1 slot, move down. We hear thatthey are planning a smash follow-up.40 Manfred Mann moving up with theirCome Tomorrow. Could go still higher andthe boys could make it No. 1 in the States.5Del Shannon moving up with hisSearchin'. This has one of the mostmonotonous sounds I've ever heard. ButI mean that as a compliment. Any otherstyle on this disc would have been a flop.6Cilla Black with her version ofLovin' Feeling. Never mind Cilia, I thinkyou should have made No. 1 anyway.7Sounds Orchestral's Cast Your Faterates as the best instrumental disc of theyear for me.8Georgie Fame going down but it'sgiven that much -needed boost to hiscareer.9Val Doonican, whom I said wouldmake it back to the Top Twenty. Howcould he fail with a face like that? TheSpecial Years isn't as hot as his first tho'.10Them, the group who nearly didn'tstay in Ireland and in fact went back toIreland after trying to get a record con-tract, proved that it can be done after all.11 Twinkle going down and going out.Nice to see girls in the charts, but notwith this kind of song.12The Seekers, one of our Tips ForThe Charts, still moving up the charts. They could build a big reputation in thiscountry.13Sandie Shaw, who hasn't had thatmuch show biz experience now comes upwith a hefty swinger.14Gerryshowing he:really can make it.A swinging single, and I hear an album ofthe same name is now being rushed outin the States.15The Shangri-Las' Leader Of ThePack. Another death disc isn't too hot atthe moment, something which I'm veryglad about..16Billy Fury moves back up the chartsagain. The disc that I mentioned mightnot click with the Fury fans shot into thecharts and proved me wrong.170 Brian Poole's Three Bells notringing as loud as they should be. I can'tsee this excellent disc doing too well.180P. J. Proby whose name appearsjust about everywhere, has been in therecording studios all last week cuttingsome new singles.19The Beatles going opt? They shouldworry. After being No. 1 with thisnumber in about ten countries.20The Rockin' Berries move intothe Twenty. Seem to be moving tooslowly for a real smash.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED

TO BEAT MUSIC ?Isn't it funny how everyone goes around

talking about teenagers and beat musicand that beat music is the craze? It'sfunny to me anyway. 11ainly becauseif anyone cares to take a long hard lookat the charts, they will find that hotblooded beat music has been dying for along, long time. In fact, like it or not,we are going backwards in beat music,or pop music to the years when RubyMurray and Johnnie Ray with AlmaCogan for the No. 1 slot.

Just take a look at the charts and thepeople in the charts who are taking usbackwards or forwards to that era.Cilia Black and Sandie Shaw don'trecord rockers. They record slow orfast ballads, or as the experts say,up -tempo ballads. Brenda Lee, onceknown as the Queen Of Rock, has nowdeserted that post and no more do wehear numbers like Let's Jump TheBroomstick.

Now she too, comes up with ballads, mainly because they are much moreacceptable to the British fans. ElvisPresley has quietly made his flipsidesthe "A" sides and now is King Of TheBallads, at least to the Elvis fans, andnumbers like tollhouse Rock and HoundDog would be laughed at today. Clifffans of course have always had anample selection of ballads from Britain'sNo. 1 singer.

Even Dusty Springfield andthe other two girl chart entrants, preferballads to make the Top Twenty. TheShadows have less and less success withfaster numbers and much more successwith slow dreamy instrumentals. TheSeekers have introduced that folksykind of style that The Springfields gaveus before they split up. Even TheBeatles are releasing more and moreballads, rather than fast 12 bar bluesmaterial. Gene Pitney and RoyOrbison are only two of our friendsfrom across the Atlantic who realise thatto make the British charts, you mustget a good ballad.

Brian Poole has discovered thatDo You Love Me? doesn't go down aswell as ballads like Someone andThree Bells. Val Doonican and JimReeves have both shown that countrystyled ballads can make the charts in avery big way.

The Bachelors of course, have beendoing this for a very long time, and theyare still having fantastic successes withtheir ballads, slow or up -tempo. P. J.Proby, after fair success with hiswilder numbers came out with Some-where and although it received a lotof criticism made the No. 2 slot and Ihear that more ballads are on theproduction line for him.

The Searchers, Billy Fury, Pet Clark, and even Manfred Mann are all slowingdown their speed and speeding up theirhi Is.

So wen you hear someone rantingand raving about wild heat songs formad teenagers, lead them gently to theTop Twenty and ask them where. O.K.POP Weekly

The fight is on! ! On my leftladies and gentlemen P. J. Probyweighing in with three hit recordsand wearing a blue smock shirt,17th 18th century hair style andone handsome face.

In the other corner, wearing the17th/18th century finery of a gentle-man of the Queen, Beau Brummel, hot contender for the charts. Tall, blond, goodlooking. Hair also in17th century style.

The fight is on indeed! ! ! P. J.

Proby, who hails from Texas andattempts very successfully, we mustsay, to be another new style of wayout artiste of the future with his"past" being the gimmick, is nowbeing challenged by Beau Brummel, who caused a small sensation on"Ready, Steady, Go!" a few weeksago.

Proby has his own valet. BeauBrummel has his own butler. Probyis handsome. So undeniably is BeauBrummel. Beau is spending some-thing like £200 on one set of clothesand has his boots cleaned withchampagne.

Proby is less worried about hisclothes than his singing, and has sofar managed to put over a hotblooded, controversial, "I Am P.J."image which has brought him morefollowers in six months than volun-teers for the British Army in twoyears.

Beau Brummel is slightly behind inthe stakes. He has no hit record tohis credit yet, but his first disc ''IKnow, Know, Know" is sufficiently

P. J. PROBY ORBEAU BRUMMEL ?

By ANTONY LOGSDENinteresting to make a mark. He alsowrites many of his own numbers.

Like P.J. he is known to be able tokeep the conversation going for anylength of time you care to write itdown. When I mentioned P. J.

Proby two or three times to him hecommented "Let's not talk aboutJim Proby. We're two completelydifferent characters."

Proby hasn't said a word yet aboutBeau Brummel, this maybe meaningthat he doesn't consider him a

challenge yet. In the next few weeksyou should have ample opportunityto see both these two singers onyour TV screens as both are gettingplenty of bookings. Who do youthink will come off best?

I'm rooting for P. J. Proby. Amongthe many reasons why are that he hasa three record lead over Beau, his songsare all different so far, he hos o greatdeal of record experience, whereasBeau has hardly any.

His former life gives him a greatdeal of knowledge of show business.Beau's former life was that of a

playboy. But the battle should be interesting

anyway. Both of them are trying tooutbid the other with their out-rageous, but certainly differentgimmicks. Both are striving to makethe other disappear from the charts, and both of them are controversialenough to make news headlineswhatever they say!

Make it a clean fight, gentlemen-and break when the fans tell you too.The winner's prize? I think a GoldDisc should be the first stage!POP Welakly 12 2 6S

Proves Nothing1 don't think The Stones are overrated,

I think The Beatles are. The Beatlesrecords get to the top of the Hit Parade, well according to the charts they doanyway, and according to some charts, yours included, The Stones haven'tbeen to the top. According to the"Musical Express" Charts. EveryTuesday in the "Daily Sketch", TheStones last two records have reachedthe top of the Charts, and that's howit should be, but every Chart Compilerdoes the same thing. As soon as theyknow The Beatles have a new record,it's at the top of the Hit Parade. TheBeatles are probably liked more but alarge number of people who like themand buy their records are older people, usually women, whilst only teenagerslike The Stones and the older people, usually women again, think The Stonesare scruffy and unclean (by the way Iknow an older woman who doesn'tthink this-my mum).

The Stones probably won't come topof your polls but that won't proveanything to me or The Stones' fans.

Geoff Brown (Reading)

She's HoppingHonestly you don't usually make me

mad, but your latest issue has. I'mtalking about the article "Are TheRolling Stones Overrated?" Well, I

say no! No! NO! ! they are not over-rated, they are underrated. They arealways being picked on and criticised.Never are they praised for doing whatthey have done in only 1 year 3 months. It is not fair to compare their record

sales with those of The Beatles. Firstof all they have been making recordsfor about half the time that The Beatleshave. They have made less than halfof the records that The Beatles have. From this you will have realised thatit is not fair to compare them with TheBeatles on record sales alone.

STONESFANS

Stones Break -ThroughI read your article "Are The Rolling

Stones Overrated?" with utter disgustand suggest, respectfully, that youshould go back to your heads andnursery rhymes.

In your article you say popularitydepends on all the number ones an artistehas, (other charts have given the Stonesa number one position), but I believe, and surely there is proof, that numberone records aren't everything, if they arethen the Pop music world in Britaintoday is in a sorry state.

You only mention Stones' singles.What about EP's and LP's? Their 5 5

EP smashed into some Top Ten chartsand both their LP's have been or will he,featured in Top Twenty charts. (I believeThe Beatles are the only other group toachieve these successes).

Then, sir, I beg you to listen to TheStones' music, especially their new LP,they play solid R & B, which a year agowas an unknown branch of pop music, they haven't followed the usual third-ratepop music trends that is being spoonedto us constantly. They followed theirown inclinations and tastes and conse-quently have made a great break throughand put R 'n' B firmly into charts allover the world, where it belongs, I mightadd.

Lesley S. Stevens (Banbury)

No Stones UnturnedI did not like what you said about

The Stones being overrated. In myopinion they are underrated. Althoughit may seem to you that they are praisedby all the papers, they are not.

When The Beatles started they nevergot all the things said about them asThe Stones did. In fact no one sinceElvis has had to go through so much"slander" which is all it is.

If you think all the papers arcpraising The Stones you should startreading the small print.

Ask any adult what they think of TheStones and they will tell you withouthesitation, but if you ask them howmany Stones' records they have actuallylistened to they will not be so ready withtheir reply.

I think if a few adults read the bookabout The Stones life they would havea different opinion of The Stones, andif they listened to The Stones' recordsthey would know that it was morethan a noise, like some of the recordswhich get into the charts.

THE P. J. PROBY STORYby ANTON VARLEY

Reviewing books is never easy. Youcan say they are good. You can also saythat they are bad. But the new book or.P. J. Proby is a gas. It gives details etc.,of the P.J. life to date and many of thesedetails I never knew before. It certainlyshows that P. J. Proby must become oneof the biggest stars ever in the pop worldand that if the groups are good or baddoesn't matter, because it's going to beP.J's year.

Modestly priced at three shillings, which is a cheap price for this fabulousforty -page book with a great selectionof pictures that actually look like realphotographs of P. J. Proby, I'm sure thisis going to be one of the best sellers ofall time, and certainly the biggest sellerof this year. It tells about P.J. thedreamer, P.J. on stage, P.J. at home,P.J's girls.

And in no uncertain terms it tells youwhy P.J. is going to be the biggest thingsince sausage rolls. Whatever happensto P.J. in the next few months doesn'tmatter because he will still he up to dateas far as this book is concerned.

The book doesn't try to over -glorifyP.J. but it does tell a lot about him thatmost people didn't know, and I'msure plenty of things that P.J. has saidwill now be a lot clearer, and what ismost important this book is written bysomeone outside the Proby camp andis completely impartial. If you arc a P.J.fan then get this fabulous publication.Rush out and order it at your localrecord shop, because it's a book worthbuying, and is certainly a book that isgoing to give any P.J. fan, and theremust be thousands now, the chance tosee Jim Proby for what he really is.A great, but great star.

DISCussionHello then-well, it's one of those middling weeks for releases-no disc really rises

to great heights of excitement or interest; yet few fall below standard. What I calla "mark time" week.

First, on Columbia, there is the newone from Herman's Hermits. This is aslowish gentle beater called "Silhouettes"and, if 1 may be permitted a pun, I willsay that I don't think it is a shadow ofthe boys' previous melodic offerings. Itis a pleasant enough performance fromSmiling Herman but there is little to whetthe appetite in the run-of-the-millcomposition itself. It is inclined to getjust a little monotonous half waythrough. There is nothing outstandingto really catch the ear-nonetheless it iseasy on the ear.

A hit -maker of yesteryear, one of thepioneers of the rising falsetto note-Slim Whitman-returns to the fray onLiberty with a smooth, slow andromantic ballad called "I'll Hold YouIn My Heart." It has a very gentle beatand a simple melody; it is the kind ofsong Frank Ifield could take into thecharts, perhaps. Slim gives a good, straightforward performance and doesnot resort too often to the falsetto notes.Acceptable but, as it stands, hardlystrong enough for today's high places.

* * *

There is a little something on R.C.A.Victor called "Turn Around" whichwe've heard many times before-some-times under other titles-from singerslike Harry Belafonte and JimmieRodgers. The same haunting tune ofthis lilting lullaby -type compositionretains its charm. The artistes areThe Womenfolk, who are new to me.Their handling of the folksy number ispleasant and easy on the ear.

*

Long John Baldry gives an excellent, bluesy performance of the UnitedArtists title "I'm On To You Baby."A slow moody offering, this, with apowerful beat and a backing choruswhich makes its presence heard in theright way. Strictly for the "specialists"I'd say-and for today's hit paradealways providing it gets an overdose ofexposure.

*

Following up her controversial hitTerry, Twinkle returns to the hit paradebattleground with a self -penned beatballad, on Decca, called "GoldenLights." Apart from quite an attractivetitle phrase there is nothing else to stickin the mind because the overall melodyis very elusive. The lyric concerns "aboy in a million who is a big record starwith his name up in Golden Lights"!But if you arc a person who is interestedin hearing the words of a song, you'lllind it a bit of a strain to understandevery one on this disc.

*** BO U Q U ET ******* The Shadows did not write theiri** new Columbia release! What about ** that, then? Jerry Lordan wrote ** it and Mary Anne is a gentle ** charmer. A slow, rather wistful ** melody played with the boys' ** established expertise; another very ** polished performance. For added ** measure, The Shads vocalise a ** very effective lyric which blends ** very smoothly into the overall ** picture of this slow lilter. Like ** myself, I think you will find the ** melody insidiously captivating. A ** really polished all-rounder this one. ** And just for the record, as it were, ** Hank and the boys DID write the *******************

On Oriole, The Kingpins give a robustperformance of "Two Right Feet." Thisheavy beater drives along quite effect-ively and generates loads of atmosphere.I am very much in sympathy with thesentiments of the title because I usuallyhave FOUR right feet when / godancing! A clean-cut showing on thisdisc but hardly, I would have thought, dead right for today's general market.

* * *

"Young Boy Blues," on Decca, is aslow ballad with a hefty beat and it givesJohn Best a good chance to show hispaces. I think he takes the opportunityso offered and makes good promise witha performance of warmth and feeling.I'm none too sure about the generalappeal of the song itself because themelody is such that it does not registervery much on the first half -dozen spins.I like the disc and it can be hoped onlythat you will hear it a few times beforemaking up your mind!

* * *

Rush -released to tie up with his newtour of Great Britain, Roy Orbison'snewie on the London label is "Goodnight."Another strong and typical Orbisoncomposition with performance to match. It is all fairly familiar; indeed, it is verysimilar to some of Roy's previousofferings and just as neatly executed. Itbuilds up to a climax, of course, and thetotal result is another polished all-round performance. I know I seem tobe harping on it a lot this week but hereagain, melody is a weakness over andabove some other Orbison discs. I DOgo on about this melodic businessbecause it is, without a doubt, either theoverall melody or a particularly catchymelodic phrase that makes a disc stickout and in the mind-it gives anindividual identity without which therecord stays hidden among all the otherindistinguishable "wax -works." In somany instances the difference between ahit and a miss has been a distinctivemelodic phrase; and I think this is even

more important when it comes to a firstdisc by an unknown artiste. So-let themelody linger on! And going back toRoy Orbison for a final word-he willlinger on for a bit with his Goodnight,I've no doubt.

* *

There is a disc by-The Disc entitled"Not Meant To Be," on Columbia, which is meant to be yet another attemptby record makers to emulate theSpector -type sound. Now, although Iadmit that my own ear is not easily tunedinto that Sound, I do not object to it;I appreciate it is a product of someone'screative talents and, when well done, can be so very effective. I think, however, it is absolutely essential tohave a good, memorable composition(once again we have this "individualidentity" thing again!) which this discby The Disc has not got. It's all a littledown in the mouth and drags a bit.

For those who subscribe to thethought that there will be a return tothe instrumental sound this year, I

commend the ear to Pye's revival ofthat "little classic" "Big Noise FromWinnetka." The Eric Delaney Big BeatSix-despite that description, give agentle and very effective performance.Drum -lovers will love the warm, restrained exhibition here. I have buttwo personal criticisms: it fades out atthe end all too unceremoniously andunnecessarily; and it fades out muchtoo soon-which makes a change, eh?

As I said, not a wildly exciting lot thisweek-but some interesting ones. Howabout next week, then? Till then-

Happy memories,'Bye for now.

THE EDITOR SPEAKS

EXPERIENCE HITS THE CHARTS

EVERY TIMEWith everyone waffling about new sounds, new styles and new groups, it's hardlysurprising that one of the most important

factors that make up a top pop singer has gone unnoticed. In oneword, Experience. Take a look at the charts at the moment. Dis-regarding the USA stars we have The Moody Blues, who have gainedconsiderable experience stagewise after their many one-night stands andtheir many ballroom one stop appearances.

Georgie Fame is being hailed as the brilliant new star, yet he haslashings of experience behind him, and has been on the scene for manyyears. Sounds Orchestral are session men, so naturally experience isthe main factor there. You don't get to be a top session man becauseyou happen to resemble Elvis Presley. The Beatles have been singingfor four or five years now, and have appeared at many different placesbefore their initial breakthrough.

Cilia Black has had her share of experience too. She had appearedat many of the top spots in Liverpool before she eventually made thegrade via Brian Epstein. The Manfred Mann group have all had longspells of touring and doing the endless grind of one night stands forlittle money before they too hit the charts.

Gerry and The Pacemakers have also, like The Beatles, appeared atmany of the Liverpool night spots and have made certain that two orthree years wasn't too long to wait for a hit. Cliff Richard had theusual singer's heartbreak of walking around looking for dates with hisgroup The Drifters, now The Shadows. The Shadows too didn't makeit easily. They had to come up the hard way.

Billy Fury appeared on many package shows before his disc careereven started. Since then he has built himself a tremendous reputation. The Kinks have been on the scene for many years, as has Val Doonican. All of The Kinks know that fame doesn't come easily until you have abackground of hard work and a lot of practicing.

Brian Poole and The Tremeloes have been playing their kind ofmusic for five years and it has taken them all that time to build up fans,a large repertoire and a lot of miles on the clock. The Searchers havealso done their many miles of touring before they even made the discscene at all. The same goes for Adam Faith, The Stones, Billy J.Kramer and The Bachelors.

Them, the new group currently selling with their new single, haveknown what it is to be wondering where the next hot meal is comingfrom.

There are of course, a few new artistes who haven't got the experiencebut have been lucky or unlucky enough to make the charts with theirfirst records.

Sandie Shaw had no really professional experience at all. Nor didTwinkle. But they are the exceptions, and I know that the people whomI have mentioned with experience will say that they would rather workfor almost nothing for a long time and get the experience than enter thecharts knowing nothing about the business.

In fact, most of today's top stars will tell you that, although at timesthey hated their former life of little money, old equipment and evenolder travelling vehicles, it gave them the experience, the stamina andthe strength of character to put up with their success when it did arrive.

So when you read about a new polished star arriving on the scene, just quietly omit new from your mind. It's more or less certain to bean old experienced singer who has made the grade at last. And that'sthe way it should be! !

Buzzin' Dozenby DON

CLIFF BENNETT, who made thecharts a few months ago with One WayLove, after being taken over by BrianEpstein, The Beatles' manager, is nowalmost certain to have a Top Ten hitwith I'll Take You Home which is oneof the best singles I have heard in thisNew Year. It has received a tumultu-ous reception everywhere where theboys have played and on their recentappearance at "Ready, Steady, Go!"Cliff and the boys had all the other topgroups joining in the applause as wellat the rehearsal. A rousing successfor Cliff?

After a quick chat to BILLY J.KRAMER last week, when he assuredme that rumours of a marriage werecompletely untrue, I managed to gethim to say a few words about his newsingle, It's Gotta Last Forever which hasreceived Top Twenty tips both here andin the United States. "I like it, which

is something for me" admitted Billy."But I have just recorded my next singlewhich is an absolute knockout. I likeit better than this one." So there youarc fans. You know now what thenext single will do. Go straight toNo. 1.

Pretty, vivacious JAN DOUGLAS,who has been singing around theballrooms and theatres for some yearspops up with a new single that deservesa heap of praise although I doubtwhether it will make the charts. It'sa gas of a disc called Walkin' In TheRain and is one of the best performanceson the market. Apart from beingone of our most charming singers, sheis sadly underrated. I hope thatsomebody will give her a lot moreexposure because she certainly deservesit

A new group out on Decca Recordsat the moment with an outside chanceof breaking into the charts, arc thegroup called COPS & ROBBERS,with a single called St. James' Infirmarywhich is a most unusual title for arecord. But there again the group arca most unusual group. They arcrapidly being hailed as a group with adifferent sound and one that should

CRISPmark the start of a long and wealthycareer for the lads. The name of thegroup by the way is derived from aBo Diddley record title-and notbecause of their brushes with the longarm of the law!

A group who are rated as being oneof the best songwriting wise as well assinging wise, always attract a certainamount of attention. This is howThe Beatles started too, for those thatdidn't know. Managers these days arealways hoping for a group that canperform and compose well. This newgroup called THE BEAT SIX havenow done just that with a single calledBernadine. Actually Bernadine isn'tone of their own compositions, but the"B" side, The River, is. Both sidessound interesting. Have a spin.

After Brian Epstein had signed THERUSTIKS last summer, we all expecteda hit in the charts, especially as they were"very good composers." However, they now have another stab at the chartswith a more commercial disc calledNot The Lovin' Kind which is certainlydifferent and must rate as one of thebest for many a year. With the numberof TV appearances they have lined upit's possible that the boys should makethe Top Forty at least with this platter.

Yet another group, and anotherdifferent title to their name. This grouparc called UNIT FOUR PLUS TWO.Their new single Concrete And Clay, could prove that it's not too "heavy" tohit the Top Twenty. A much bettersound this than most of the new groups. The background work on this disc isenough to make it stand out from theusual crop of releases about this time.Watch this group. For Unit Fourfans, Rusty Hinges has now left thegroup. His place as drummer is nowtaken over by Hugh "Pigmy" Halliday.

Platter that is certain to make thecharts is THE ZOMBIES' new singleTell Her No which is already high inthe American charts. It has clicked upover four hundred thousand sales inthe States. The boys were disappointedthat because of the American laws theyweren't allowed to appear anywherebut in New York. The fact that theyhave two singles in the Top Fifty overthere and that one has been a No. I

and the other has the chance of becom-ing a No. 1 means that The Zombiesshould be allowed to tour more thansome of the British groups who arcappearing over there.

Well, here's a twist to an old theme.Instead of a British group going toAmerica to record, we have an Americangroup coming here to hit the charts byrecording in this country. Theyare called GOLDIE AND THE

GINGERBREADS. It's a four girlgroup and one that has been popularin the USA for some time. Both TheBeatles and The Stones liked the girlsplaying when they saw them in theStates. It was The Animals' managerMike Jeffries who persuaded the girlsto come to this country. Now theyhave a rocking single called Can't YouHear My Heartbeat which is one of thebest singles to come from anyoneAmerican lately.

A cert hit for the Top Ten and apossible No. 1. It's the late JIMREEVES, with his new waxing ItHurts So Much To See You Go. Boundto be a smash seller and to give Jimanother posthumous Silver Disc fromthis country. Part composed by Jim,it's one of his singles which make yourealise all the more that when we lostJim Reeves, we lost one of the beststylists in the country field as well asa very nice guy.

With Them and The Bachelorsshowing that Ireland can produce somehot Top Ten smashes, what we neededwas a girl from Ireland. Now we haveone and she could well have her firsthit. It's JACKIE LEE, an ex -Raindropsinger who comes through on a Bachar-ach David composition that must reachthe charts. Probably one of the finestpieces of wax in the country. Un-doubtedly a hit provided it gets theplugs. She has a set of TV appearanceslined up that should do the record andher lovely features justice. It certainlywon't be justice if this disc doesn'tmake the Top Ten.

A record titled the In Crowd iscausing some slight controversy. Bya group called THE FIRST GEAR,who are apparently very popular in theNorth of England (which is fine becauseI don't think anyone has heard of themin the South) it has been banned bysome .TV producers. Why, I haven'tyet found out, but doubtless thebanning will only last until the disc getsinto the charts. The flipside is calledGotta Make Their Future Bright. Withrecords like this being banned I can'tsee the future being all that bright forThe First Gear.

SHOULD The Bullies Split Upby JACQUELINE

After weeks of seeing articles Mc(

"Will The Beatles Split Up?" I nowbring to light another poser which I amsure is much more acceptable to allconcerned. Not "Would The BeatlesSplit Up?" but "SHOULD The BeatlesSplit Up?" Before everyone dashesaway to load their shotguns and give ventto their feelings by sending me poisonoussnakes in the post, let me explain.

John Lennon is now being acceptedas a singer, an artist (in the artisticsense), a writer, an actor, and a soloTV personality.

Ringo Starr has now reached thestage that he could possibly earn moremoney by making his own solo recordsthan he can by staying with The Beatles. He has also gained a big audience ofolder people who rate him as a highlycomical movie star, as "A Hard Day'sNight" showed.

George Harrison has now shown usthat musically, he is far ahead of mostof the guitarists in this country and ofcourse, he also writes songs and is a

good singer. He too, comes out as a

Paul McCartney is also one of thenew brand of actors that everyone isshouting about and also, of course, israted as a top composer and singer. His songwriting could lead him intodoing his own musical, writing that is,

and maybe appearing as well. Now just consider for a moment.

How many times do you get the chanceto see The Beatles? If The Beatles wereto split up, you would have four timesthe chance of seeing or hearing Beatlesongs. Of seeing Ringo on TV forinstance by himself. Of seeing Paul inhis own film? Of meeting John on hisown one night stands. Of meetingGeorge with his own group or appearingon TV or opening local stores.

The truth is that The Beatles simplydon't have time for most of theirpursuits. John Lennon looks quitecapable of turning into a good actor.but he just can't stand as much chancewith the other Beatles because theyhave so many other commitments.

It's going to be interesting to seewhat does happen. But I predict if TheBeatles did split up it wouldn't mean thatthey wouldn't get into the charts. They all have their own personaltalents which would still enable them tomake the charts.

But then ... I'm just daydreaming ...perhaps it won't happen . . . ?

Last week's "Pop Weekly" Pop Pollsresults brought a shock to many people.Brenda Lee for instance beating Dustyinto first place for "World Personality(Female)." "The Best Artiste on Wax"

brought other surprises too, like TheBeatles only taking third place behindCliff and Cliff of course just behind Elvis.

This week there are more surprises. We print the TOP TEN in every sectionand see what you think of some of theresults, especially those placed in theunfortunate section headed "TheWorld's Most Likely One -Hit Wonder."

Section 1. Elvis took such a fantasticlead here, it must have been againmainly due to the very well organisedFan Club, which pushes Elvis in thiscountry with every opportunity they get.The Beatles' fans who, had they beenmore forceful could have pushed theiridols into the No. 2 slot were pipped bythe Cliff fans by a few votes. Interestingto note that the less well organisedStones fans could only get their favouritefivesome to the No. 4 slot. Same goesfor Billy Fury who has many Fan Clubsin this country, none of which however,is well organised enough to push Billyany higher than fifth position.

Section 2. One of the biggestsurprises here was John Lennon beatingBilly Fury for the third place. Adisappointing situation for Cliff. Hecould only come No. 2 and over athousand votes behind Elvis! The othertwo Beatles, Paul and Ringo made thecharts, but poor old George Harrisondidn't make an entrance anywhere.

Section 3. Biggest surprise to me wasBrenda Lee who hasn't been faring toowell of late discwise beating Dusty, whohas been doing more than well on wax,for the first place. Cilia's votes, althoughputting her into third position weredisastrous compared to the votes forDusty and Brenda Lee. In fact, onlysome 100 -odd votes put Sandie Shawinto fourth place, which after only tworecords gives her a good start for nextyear's poll, and proves that she is rapidlyovertaking Cilia in popularity.

Biggest disappointment must be toHelen Shapiro who came tenth, andwhose voice at the moment is givingplenty of trouble to her doctors.

Section 4. This I think was theultimate in how Fan Clubs mean somuch to artistes. When the Elvis FanClub heard of the "Pop Weekly" PopPoll they advised every one of theirmembers to vote for Elvis. That is whyElvis's two 'B' side numbers took firstand second place. The Beatles tookthird with I Feel Fine which I personallythought should have been No. I. Shocksurprise was The Stones, supposed to bethe second biggest group in the land, coming ninth with Little Red Rooster.

Section 5. The section headed "MostRead Artiste." This brought some moresurprises. Elvis took the top positionhere again, although he hasn't beenfeatured in "Pop Weekly" or otherpapers for some time. The Beatles tooksecond place as expected. But the P. J.Proby fiascos seem to have made himmore than popular and only a few votesfrom The Stones' fans separated himfrom the third position.

Section 6. A huge lead for Elvisagain. Surprising, as I thought TheBeatles may have made a much biggerimpression here. Cliff took secondposition with what I considered to be afantastic lead over The Beatles althoughin terms of actual votes it wasn't somany.

Section 7. Shock surprises here. The Moody Blues, formerly DennyLaine and The Diplomats, took No. 1slot because of one record success. Themuch -publicised Simon Scott tooksecond choice, which was rather obvious, and a surprise again with death -discsinger, Twinkle, hitting the third slot.No Georgie Fame. A tip for BrianEpstein here as Tommy Quickly movesinto fourth position. I think this lad hasgot a bigger following than most peoplethink. Surprised that Francoise Hardywas mentioned at all.

Section 8. Although this poll sectionwas not meant to be too serious we neverdreamed that one group wog Id poll somany votes. The Honeycombs havebeen voted No. 1 with so many votes itwas unbelievable. Herman too, stolemany votes for second place, although Ipersonally think he can make a come-back. Val Doonican I think will con-tinue to get hits, likewise Georgie Fame.Marianne Faithfull must be mad at thefact that she is now considered a one -hitartiste. But shocks must be for TheHoneycombs. After their one hit theyhaven't been heard of since.

In conclusion, I would like to addthat this poll has brought forward someinteresting results. First, that Fan Clubs,as in this case the Elvis Presley one, canbe of immense help in winning polls.

Secondly, and again as important, the poll makes it clear that becausesomeone may make hit records doesn'talways mean that that artiste is as

popular on TV or radio, or onstage. In future polls, I suggest that the Cliff,

Beatles, Stones Fan Clubs shouldorganise their fan members to get asmany votes as possible. It's been anexciting poll-except for The Honey-combs that is. But maybe even they willprove us wrong yet.

Further reflections on the Poll andpictures of artistes featured will he foundon the following pages.
