Some downstream sectors are unlikely to accept a rise. Powder coatings have found their forte in the general metals market, where the products have done well. This market accounts for around $600 M of the $1 bn US powder coatings market. It is a highly fragmented market and this makes it easier for price rises to be passed on to customers. Rohm and Haas is well positioned in the general metals market. Its powder coatings business implemented a 3% rise in price for all its powder coatings products, with effect from 1 Apr 2003. The big worry in the industry is the move overseas of many N American powder coating customers and over capacity in the industry. Current capacity utilization is below 50%. Rather than export, it is cheaper to produce where the end-product is being made. N America has 75 suppliers and formulators of powder coatings but only 12 can supply world-wide. The 75 may fall to 40, or even the high twenties over the next 6 years as consolidation takes place.
