Egg prices are at decade lows. The USDA in its Oct. 12 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report summed it up: “Cattle, hog, broiler and turkey prices for the last quarter of 2016 are reduced from last month (September’s forecast) as supplies of product are large. For 2017, the continued large supplies of beef, pork and broiler meat are expected to pressure prices through the year. Egg prices are also reduced for both 2016 and 2017.” Prices in 2016 were forecast down 7 percent for broilers and down 53 percent for eggs. For 2017, prices were projected to 3 percent for broilers, while eggs were expected to recover 13 percent. The USDA forecast commercial red meat and poultry production in 2017 at 100,319 million lbs., up 78 million lbs. from its September projection, up 3 percent from 97,439 million lbs. forecast for 2016 and up 6 percent from 94,630 million lbs. in 2015. If realized, it would be the first time in history that total red meat and poultry output has topped 100 billion lbs. in a year. Higher total red meat and poultry exports will take some, but not nearly all, of the increased production. Exports in 2017 were projected at 15,703 million lbs., up 5 percent from 2016 and up 10 percent from 2015. The data are stacking up against a recovery in protein prices anytime soon. The question is, why are producers continuing to increase red meat, poultry and egg production as prices are falling? That question has puzzled the egg industry for months with processing egg prices at just a fraction of production costs. The American Egg Board said recently that egg production recovered from last year’s devastating laying flock losses caused by the widespread outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza about six months sooner than expected (in 12 months rather than 18 months). Also contributing to the oversupply of eggs, some industry observers contend, is the build-up of cage-free laying flocks while producers maintained traditional laying flock sizes rather than cutting back by a like amount. While eggs are in a unique position with recovery from avian influenza and a shift in production methods, other factors also have combined to boost meat and egg production and limit exports. It remains to be seen by how much grain, livestock, poultry and egg producers will adjust production in 2017 to improve sagging profit margins. Windhoek – Now more than ever the government and the private sector need to work together and collaborate on practical initiatives that can create employment as fast as possible in the short- and medium-term to prevent the local economy from contracting and pushing more people into poverty. This message came from Maria Lisa Immanuel, senior trade and investment policy analyst of the Namibian Trade Forum when she officially launched the multi-million dollar Namboer Poultry initiative, which aims to bring poultry farming to the masses at affordable prices. One such initiative is to stimulate poultry production in Namibia. Poultry farming comes with untapped business opportunities offering great potential to create employment across the entire value chain and consequently drive rural industrialisation. “The poultry industry forms an integral part of the agro – processing sector in Namibia. This sector offers significant potential to increase value addition, to create jobs, income and export opportunities to enhance food security and reduce dependence on imports and hence, has been prioritised by government through various policy initiatives. “Presently, the sector unfortunately faces many constraints across the whole value chain, which require systematic planning from both government and the private sector to develop a robust and sustainable sector, which can positively grow the sector and the economy at large,” she noted. Immanuel said there is a high demand for indigenous chicken in Namibia. Small-scale poultry farming has the potential to lead rural industrialization in the regions, especially in times when the effects of drought threaten food security at household and national level. Most rural households here in the country traditionally raised chicken for own consumption. The indigenous knowledge factor is thus a distinct comparative advantage that government should take advantage of by planning targeted programmes to make this a reality.

Women and youth in rural areas stand to benefit most from indigenous poultry farming. A business model that allows the youth to take over the running of business systems, while the women focus on production, could be viable. Indigenous chicken farming is less capital intensive, with a low rate of disease outbreak, as the breed is adaptable to local environmental conditions. They also have flexible feeding ratios and feed is easily sourced, as it can be mahangu, rice, insects and maize by-products, etc. It also requires fewer veterinary services and the infrastructure is simple and cost-effective to set up. Support could be in the form of availing start-up inputs, as well as training in poultry management and husbandry. Immanuel applauded Namboer Poultry for their initiative, which will supply chickens and all needed infrastructure, as well as feeds and incubators. “They say the first step to starting is information empowerment,” she concluded. While poultry farms are making serious efforts, including financial investments, to make the region self-

sufficient, several issues such as illegal imports from Brazil and cheap ‘dump chicken’ from the US are

harming the industry, local entrepreneurs say. According to Trevin Nairne, export manager with Jamaica

Broilers, throughout the Caribbean B-grade chicken is being imported from the US “that clearly is being

dumped”. Meanwhile, Brazilian, Mexican and Chilean chicken is also entering the regional market. Nairne

wondered how it is possible that a large facility such as Jamaica Broilers, which produces high quality

products, exists in the region and yet inferior quality chicken is allowed to enter the regional market. During

several events at the Caribbean Week of Agriculture 2016 in the Cayman Islands, representatives of

international and regional institutions, policymakers and farmers lamented the fact that unhealthy foods

especially are entering the Caribbean in staggering amounts. Desmond Ali, executive director of the

Caribbean Poultry Association (CPA), said that for some time the organization has raised its concerns

regarding the influx of chicken from outside the region. Source: caribbeannewsnow.com

Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock holds a stakeholders consultative meeting with the private sector on the importation of processed meat. This meeting was held on the 26th October 2016 at government complex. The meeting was attended by the players in the meat industry and government departments. The purpose of the meeting was called for to discuss the harmonisation of imports in terms of volume and sanitary requirements for all imports to safeguard the Zambian livestock industry. This meeting was officially opened by the honourable Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Honourable Michael katambo, MP. In his speech the Minister indicated that imports of cheap fish processed meat have skyrocated and are threatening the local production and growth of the livestock industry in zambia. He also highlighted that development of any country depends on increasing local production, to that effect, the Minister encouraged all the players in the fisheries and livestock industry to focus their attention on investing in processing locally produced meat products as opposed to imports. He indicated that that imports must only be a stop gap measure and not long term solution but emphasised that import are not risk free and contributes to the vulnerability of an economy. The Minister highlighted the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will not allow the country to be turned into a dumping ground of cheap processed meat. This meeting was called for following a series of dialogue discussions between the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and PAZ concerning importation of processed chicken products that were sported being sold in the domestic market at the expense of local production. The meeting resolved in general that only products that cannot be sourced locally would be allowed to be imported. To that effect, it was agreed that the industry and traders including chainstores should share statistics which will be key in making decisions with regards to importation of processed products. It was further agreed that the sanitary requirements agreed at the last meeting will still stand in order to safeguard the local fisheries and livestock industry. PAZ was represented at this meeting by the board members headed by the National vice chairperson Mrs Machungwa, Dr Anthony Chacko, Mrs Chizinga Musonda, Mrs Swart, Mr Simon wild and the Executive Manager of PAZ.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) market remains an integral and significant part of Zambia’s agricultural and industrialisation strategy. The conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement between Zambia and DRC has been well received by the poultry industry players in Zambia. This welcome is due to the fact that Congo market remains the major export destination for Zambian poultry products as over 30% of egg produced in Zambia is exported into Congo and above 15% of the live broiler birds and spent layers are also export into DRC. However much of these products are sold in kasumbalesa on the Zambian side. In an effort to fully capture that market and begin the implementation of the bilateral trade agreement, the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) together with 20 Zambian companies undertook a trade and investment mission in Lubumbashi last week to showcase Zambian products in that country. Zambeef which is an integrated agricultural conglomerate was part of this important trade and investments mission to show case their range of products which included the Zamhatch day old chicks. This is with the hope of putting Zamhatch foot print in the DRC market. Zamhatch’s effort in securing the DRC market will help the Zambian poultry industry gain market access in this lucrative market and attract other poultry products such as stockfeed, poultry equipment’s etc. to be exported into this market. The export market will help create an export vent to deal with excess day old chicks in the domestics market while maintaining production

The industry in conjunction with PAZ has continued facilitating training for poultry farmers to enhance their skills in poultry production. Last week Ross breeders in conjunction with PAZ Secretariat organised a training workshop for the poultry farmers in Lusaka. This training was held in the show grounds, Lima hall and it attracted about 238 small scale and medium farmers. The training focussed on summer brooding, bio-security and management of poultry as a business. This training is part of many trainings being organised countrywide to upgrade the poultry management skills for the poultry farmers. With the prevalence of diseases and market challenges which has come as a result of contracting economic activities in the country, the trainings are focused on training farmers to take poultry as a business. The training team from the Ross breeders will be heading to eastern province to conducts a series of trainings scheduled for the 15th to 19th November 2016.

Financial market players predict that the local unit will

trade below K9.60 against the United States (US) dollar

in the short term. It has been established that demand

for the greenback has completely disappeared while

long dollar holders are trying to cut their losses. The US

dollar/Kwacha relationship has taken a new low, now

trading below K9.60. The financial market indicates that

liquidity level witnessed an upward trend of about K2.4

billion in circulation. This means that the liquidity,

which describes the degree to which an asset or

security can be quickly bought or sold in the market

without affecting the asset’s price, swelled by over

K160 million. Money market liquidity remained

significantly long at K2 395.22 million from the previous

day’s K2 232.11 million and the weighted average

overnight interbank rate was little changed at 16.53

percent from 16.50 percent.
