THE VISION

… Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time ...

Habakkuk 2:2b-3a

A couple of Sundays ago the preaching moment has begun to unpack the results of our visioning process. So far, we have been considering the vision in the context of the Biblical account of the journey of Abraham and Sarah – two people to whom God made extraordinary, seemingly impossible to realize, promised. We have been reminded of the radical nature of the couple’s faithfulness: God said “go,” and they went, even though there were obstacles in the way of the promises’ fulfillment and virtually no details offered about what God was going to do about that. We have also been reminded of the danger of giving in to the temptation to step out on one’s own when God seems to be slow in keeping God’s promises. In the next weeks we will continue to consider the vision in various ways that relate to the texts for preaching. For now, I thought it would be helpful for you to see the vision in writing:

(1) Wesleyan Covenant Groups We must all step up our discipleship quotient by developing and participating in Wesleyan style covenant groups that assemble for the purpose of Bible Study, prayer and personal accountability. “How is it with your soul,” an expression often used by John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, has got to become the touch phrase through which we engage each other, assess our own connectedness to God and hold each other accountable.

(2) Evangelism Emphasis We must focus more heavily on the true nature of evangelism – both what it is and what it is not – and develop church-wide processes for making evangelism a core belief from which our actions and ministries flow.

(3) Deepening Spirituality of Youth & Young Adults We must develop methods for caring for the souls of our young adults, with the intention of moving them into more faithful church attendance and nurturing their souls into more faithful Christian discipleship.

(4) Creating a House of Welcome We must make this a place a place where everyone is welcome to be – just as they are. And we will find ways for all who journey here to speak their truth while being heard with love and respect. There can be no limits on God’s love or the ways in which we give it expression.

(5) Discipling New Members We must adopt ways to acclimate new members into the life of this congregation, mentoring and encouraging them into active participation in our work and ministry; nurturing them on their spiritual journeys.

(6) Excellent Worship We must continue to make excellent worship a focal point of the life of this congregation. Vital, vibrant worship that gives worshipers a glimpse of the divine is an essential part of our ministry of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

These six points represent the direction in which we will be traveling in the coming weeks and months. I believe that the journey will be exciting. I know that it will require our best efforts and our full commitment in order to live into the future that God has planned for us. Please continue to pray for this congregation, and for me as its spiritual and temporal leader. Together, let’s watch what God does next.

Peace to you all, Pastor Adrienne ___

HUDSON VALLEY BRIDGE BUILDERS Hudson Valley Bridge Builders is looking for a site coordinator for the Mission Camp's social teams.  This is a great opportunity for someone who has a passion for helping the social needs in Poughkeepsie and Kingston.  Jeff Hart has been the social site coordinator since the camp's inception and has recently accepted the role of Treasurer for the organization.  He's looking to transfer this opportunity to someone who will be responsible for calling the various organizations, meeting with their leaders and developing a week-long work schedule for approximately four teams of 5 students and 1 adult.  If you feel led to helping the camp that started here at PUMC in 2010 continue it's mission of …

… then please contact Jeff Hart.

LABELS FOR EDUCATION Attention: Campbell Soup Company, as of July, will no longer accept “labels for education.” If you have labels, please be sure to get them to us. (Our Red Bird Mission has nearly enough for a new bus.) The collection box is on the mission table in Fellowship Hall. All other box tops and labels for education are continuing. Thank you!!

FROM MISSIONS/OUTREACH ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION TRIP

We are excited to report that PUMC Missions/Outreach is sending Alexa Lundin on a NY AnnualConference Mission Trip. She will travel to Mt. Osbourne Church where a previous Mission group, two years ago, had started to build a community hall for the church. The church continues to work on the building and the members of the Mission Team this year will be working toward the completion of the first floor rooms. The team will also be helping with Vacation Bible School while they are there. The trip will run from July 4th to July 11th, at Mt. Osbourne Church in Santa Cruz ( St. Elizabeth's Parish), which is in the mountains, south of Montego Bay. Your prayers will be appreciated for a successful trip.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS We are happy to report that this year, The Family Partnership has agreed to allow us to distribute the Thanksgiving baskets from their location. This will be easier for those receiving the baskets because stairs will not be an issue and it is centrally located.

YOUTH NEWS

[ John Marrine - Youth Ministry Director ] HAPPENINGS

It is hard to believe that another year is coming to a close for our Youth Group and that we send another set of high school graduates to college. We would like to recognize both our high school and college graduates during our June 11th services. If you are graduating or know someone graduating, please complete the short form found on the youth bulletin board, in the sanctuary, or on our pokumc.org church website under the Youth/Parent tabs and return them to the church office by June 4th so we can get them in the bulletin and share in their success. Hopefully we have helped to prepare them to stay grounded in their faith and that they know they always have a home here at PUMC. The good news is that we are welcoming a great group of 6th grade youths into our Junior High program which we pray will be a rewarding experience for them. May was another busy month which started off with a TGIF Scavenger Hunt where the youth were given challenges to find items and perform certain tasks.  To honor our Veterans, we assisted once again with the posting of flags on their grave sites for Memorial Day at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. And we ended the month with a Memorial Day youth group walk on the Rail Trail and of course had to treat ourselves to some ice cream afterwards.

We hope to see you at our June 3rd Flea Market & Car Wash to help fund our summer mission trips. And what would the youth year be without the Youth Group year-end picnic on June 11th (new 6th graders and families are invited) where we'll share some food, games, recognize our graduates and look back on a great year. Please continue to pray for our three summer mission trips: M-Fuge (June 26-July 1) in Philadelphia; Mexico (July 21-29) in Ensenada; Bridge Builders (July 30-August 4) in Poughkeepsie. Please refer to the schedule below for June events as well as the youth bulletin board and church website (under the 'Youth/Calendar' tabs). Hope to see you at these events!

HEALING PRAYER TEAM [Vickey Carroll]

The Healing Prayer Team is here to pray with you for any need, big or small, or for someone you know in need of prayer. ALL IS KEPT STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. There are several opportunities for Healing Prayer

THE PRAYER ROOM HAS MOVED For a number of years, our Healing Ministry has offered prayers in the little room next to the office. At times, this room needs to be used as office space for church business. In order to have a more healing and spiritual atmosphere, we have moved into the room also used by the Christian Counselors on the lower level. It is handicapped accessible through the outer door and it has a cozier, more spiritual feel. Please feel free to drop in for prayer as needed on Sundays between services. No appointment necessary.

COMMUNION SUNDAYS Healing Prayer is always available during the Holy Communion portion of worship on the first Sunday of the month. Teams are located in the front and back corners of the Sanctuary.

SOAKING PRAYER Soaking Prayer is a precious hour to give to the Lord, and to sit and soak in his presence. No water is involved! This is a time meant to be set aside for you and God − and He will bless this time you carve out for Him. Soaking Prayer is not just for times of crisis; it is for any season of your life. Sit quietly while soft worship music plays, and soak in the presence of Our Lord. You may pray, read the bible, write, or just rest in Him − even sleeping is permitted! Soaking Prayer is available the last Friday of the month at 7:00PM in the Sanctuary. Childcare is available. We hope you will join us!

INDIVIDUAL PRAYER APPOINTMENTS The Healing Prayer Team is always ready to meet with you for prayer. We encourage those who are in need of healing of any kind to come in for a prayer session. No need is too large or too small for God! Simply call the Church Office to request an appointment and a team will be happy to meet and pray with you .
