“Partnering in Christ to Establish Relationships and Nurture a Community of Faith”

AUGUST 2015

Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 28:19 “Go and make disciples of all nations.” How do we make disciples? Jesus

Christ and His 12 disciples are the picture of how we should make disciples and what that looks like today.

Invest in a relationship with those individuals

Build them up in the truth and knowledge of God through His word

Equip them to teach and serve others

more disciples faster? Disciples cannot be mass produced...they are the product of intimate and personal investments.

Jesus was not concerned with programs to reach the multitudes but with men the multitudes would follow! Paul

is a great model of a disciple-making disciple. Remember Timothy and Titus? Paul invested in them, encouraged

them in the truth and equipped them to start the process over again. Paul's version of the great commission was his

personal mission.

(Colossians 1:28-29) “We proclaim Him (Christ) admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we

The LMT Spotlight - Worship by: Sean Roby

The lay mobilization team at our church is firmly

entrenched in a study of discipleship. Our team is not

only learning to be disciples individually, but seeking

ways to nurture discipleship in our community of

faith here at Bardstown United Methodist. Our group

has found this study and the growth in understanding

of what it means to be a disciple to be revealing as

well as rewarding.

This LMT spotlight is on the topic of worship.

Revelation, Chapter 4, Verse 11 states "You are

worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and

honor and power, for you created all things, and by

your will they were created and have their being."

Our study in Greg Ogden's book Discipleship

Essentials reveals this core truth: "The functions of

the church have been variously defined as teaching,

fellowship, outreach and worship. Of these

important functions, honoring God through worship

is the church's primary purpose, because it is our

eternal vocation."

God is worthy of our worship. Ogden examines this

worthiness by focusing on the holiness of God and

the problems this holiness attribute creates within our

human nature. Generally speaking, our nature drives

us away from knowing God. In particular, we tend to

form our own perception of who God really is -

which usually involves Him looking like us.

We also refuse to look at God when He reveals

Himself because encountering God in His holiness is

a frightening experience. When considering the purity

and absolute holiness of God compared to our sinful

existence, the gap between God and us is

immeasurable.

The Good News is that while the distance between

God and us seems insurmountable, that changed with

Christ. Ogden puts it this way: "Because of Jesus

Christ and in Jesus Christ we dare to approach the

Holy Creator of the universe and address Him as

Abba, Father."

God our Father desires our fellowship so much that

He gave His only Son to make it possible. Let us seek

God in worship - in awe of our Father's holiness, in

shame before the Absolute Pure and with deep

gratitude for His mercifulness.

Amen!

Malaria is a devastating disease caused by a blood parasite, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Each year,

an estimated 219 million people are infected with malaria, causing approximately 600,000 deaths – mostly

children under the age of five.

Malaria is a huge problem in Africa, where it is a leading killer of children. In fact, there are 10 new cases

of malaria every second. Every 60 seconds, a child in Africa dies from a malaria infection and 90% of all

malaria deaths occur in the region. When combined with HIV/AIDS, malaria is even more deadly,

particularly for pregnant women and children.

Nothing But Nets works with UN partners like UNICEF, the UN Refugee Agency, and the World Health

Organization to purchase nets and distribute them to countries in Africa. Net distributions are typically part

of a wider public health effort within a country coordinated by the Ministry of Health, the UN and other

local and international organizations.

The Outreach Committee asks you to prayerfully consider making a donation to this cause. Envelopes will

be placed in the sanctuary for donations. Your $10 contribution goes towards the cost of purchasing a long

-lasting, insecticide-treated bed net, distributing it, and educating communities on its use.
