POWER TRANSFORMERS AND AUTOTRANSFORMERS
The construction, the treatment and the assembly of
the winding coils which can be considered to be the
heart of any transformer, are carried out in the
TAMINI workshops by teams of skilled workers
guided by experienced foremen.
G.O. silicon-steel laminations or complete magnetic
cores are procured already cut or fully assembled from
specialised manufactures of such components.
The clamping structures, the tanks and related
components, fittings, cooling parts and tap changers
are subcontracted to specialized and qualified
manufacturers and submitted to the TAMINI Quality
Control.
Any other operation, considered as fundamental for
the reliability and performance of the transformers, is
carried out in accordance with in-house
manufacturing, assembling and control procedures.
Therefore the completion of cores, the treatment
operations, the realization of auxiliary circuits, the
fitting of components and instruments, as well as
internal and acceptance testing and final checking
are performed by the factory staff, specifically trained
for every one of these operations.
The manufacture of large and medium power
transformers is mainly concentrated in the two
factories of Novara and Legnano, having together a
total area of 36000 sq.mt. (see “TAMINI GROUP
PROFILE” for a detailed description of these
factories).
The factory in Novara specializes in the manufacture
of transformers up to 100 MVA - 220 kV. Larger
transformers with 400 kV HV and over are
QUALITY ASSURANCE,
QUALITY CONTROL AND SAFETY
QA procedures are carried out and certified according
to ISO 9001-2000 Standards.
QC is performed at every step: engineering,
production cycles, procurement, testing and site
installation.
All the factories of the TAMINI Group have their own
testing facilities suitable for the routine, type and
special test in accordance with IEC or IEEE (ANSI)
and other worldwide recognized Standards (ASA,
CSA, BSS, SEV etc.).
Short circuit withstand test, if required, can be
performed at the internationally recognized Italian
Laboratories of CESI. In the course of the years
Tamini has submitted several HV and MV power
transformers to short circuit test as requested by the
utilities or other end users including the 400 kV-250
MVA autotransformer shown at page 2.
The companies of the TAMINI Group definitely
comply with the most updated international
legislation for safety and environmental protection
aimed at reducing the noise level and using oil with
non-polluting ingredients (PCB was banned by
Tamini in the ‘ 70s) or non-flammable oil for specific
underground applications.

DESIGN AND FEATURES OF POWER TRANSFORMERS
MAGNETIC CIRCUITS
The core is composed of silicon magnetic steel
sheets, insulated by inorganic “carlite” with high
chemical resistance to hot oil.
Pressboard insulation is interposed between
packages of sheets. The joints columns-yokes
are usually of the interleaved step-lap type.
The core columns are strongly fastened utilising
only highly resistant clamping tape; no through bolts
are used. The yokes are clamped by a strong steel
structure tightened by rods.
WINDINGS AND CONNECTIONS
The windings are made of electrolytic copper,
insulated with pure cellulose paper.
Stronger insulation is used on the terminal outlets.
Oil circulation through the windings is granted by
horizontal and vertical channels, according to the
type of winding. The winding type is designed
according the voltage value.
Usually HV windings
are of interleaved continuous disk type, while
LV windings are of transposed cable helical type.
Regulating and tertiary windings, when installed,
are also of helical type.
The internal connections from the windings
to the bushing terminals and to the tap-changers
are made by solid conductors or copper plaits
strongly insulated and clamped to wooden supports.
Special care is paid to winding stabilization,
which is achieved through a process sequence
of drying, in hot air oven, and tightening by tie-rod,
both on the single winding columns and on the
whole of each phase windings.
TERMINAL OUTLETS
HV and LV outlets are carried out through bushings
for connection to the external lines.
The bushings are of different types, according
to the specified design: they can be either
of the oil/air type or oil/oil, in case of connections
to cables in oil filled terminal boxes,
or also oil/SF6 for connection to SF6 filled
bus-bar ducts.
HV bushings are usually of the condenser type with
oil impregnated paper or epoxy resin insulation,
while MV or LV bushings are of the solid type.
Usually the bushings are fitted with external
porcelain insulators, however for the oil/air bushings
for outdoor installation, they can also be equipped
with silicon fins.
For LV and MV bushings the external connections
can be achieved through multi-contact elbow
bushings.
For installation in polluted areas the bushings
are designed with extended creepage distance
and special surface treatment.

DESIGN AND FEATURES OF POWER TRANSFORMERS
separate banks, with or without cooling fans.
The cooling can also be achieved with oil forced-air
forced (OFAF) with oil to air coolers mounted
on the transformer side or in separate bank,
and also with oil and water forced cooling (OFWF),
with vertical or horizontal oil to water coolers
mounted on the transformer side.
TAP-CHANGERS
The transformers can be equipped either with
three-phase or single-phase motor driven on-load
tap-changers usually fitted on the HV side, and with
COOLING SYSTEMS
The transformers can be designed for any applicable
cooling system following the requirements of the
end users considering the site conditions whether
their installation is indoor or outdoor, in residential
or industrial areas and the size of the transformers.
The most used cooling systems for power
transformers are natural oil and air circulation
(ONAN) for the small-medium sizes, natural
oil-forced air (ONAN/ONAF) in one or two stages.
These systems are achieved by radiator banks,
mounted on the sides of the transformer tank, or in
TANK AND OIL EXPANSION TANK
The tank and the oil expansion tank, or conservator,
are made of welded steel sheets and
reinforced structure, designed to support total
vacuum. When the transformer is fitted with
an on-load tap-changer, the conservator has
two separate sections. The internal walls are painted
with a hot oil resistant coating while externally
the tank is painted according to procedures
as per the internal QA prescription, depending
on the site environmental conditions.
The anti-corrosion painting cycle of the tank,
conservator and external piping is always submitted
to the approval of the end users.
On specific request the conservator may feature
an oil preservation system (salad bladder) or it can
be replaced by a nitrogen cushion.
ACCESSORIES
The power transformers usually have the following
