The Postgraduate Medical Journal is published on behalfof the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine byMacmillan Press Ltd.

Scope Postgraduate Medical Journal publishes originalpapers on subjects ofcurrent clinical importance. Eachissue contains commissioned reviews and leading articlesbut unsolicited submissions are also welcome. Each issuealso includes 'Letters to the Editor', book reviews and aninternational postgraduate diary. Many issues containpapers or abstracts of symposia devoted to a singlesubject, and the full proceedings ofmeetings arepublished as supplements to the Journal. The Journal, asthe organ of the Fellowship ofPostgraduate Medicine, isdedicated to advancing the understanding and practiceof postgraduate medical education and training.

The Fellowship ofPostgraduate Medicine was foundedafter the First World War and was a pioneer in theUnited Kingdom in the development ofprogrammes ofpostgraduate study in all branches ofmedicine (seePostgradMedJ61, 1). It always has been, and remains,independent of University, Health Service andGovernment. Currently the Fellowship works closelywith the National Association of Clinical Tutors infurthering mutual aims. Amongst other activities, theFellowship provides research grants and support foryoung investigators especially those working temporarilyin the UK.

Figures In the text Arabic numbers should be usedand all illustrations should be specifically referred to inthe text, e.g. (Figure 2). All illustrations should besubmitted at about Ij times the intended final size andshould be numbered as figures whether they arephotographs, representational drawings or line diag-rams and graphs.Photographs and photomicrographs should beunmounted glossy prints and should not be retouched,and should be chosen to exclude technical artefacts.Magnification is best indicated by a line representing adefined length included within the photographs. Areasof key interest and/or critical reproduction should beindicated on a flimsy overlay attached to the photo-graph or on a photocopy. All annotations and letter-ing should be indicated in the same way, andpreferably not included on the original print.
