Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in Oxford

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-

based form of psychotherapy. As a result of its proven

effectiveness, it has become very widely used in the

National Health Service in the UK, and around the world,

particularly as a recommended treatment for common

mental health problems such as depression and anxiety

disorders.

Oxford has a worldwide reputation as a centre of

excellence for developing clinical practice, training,

supervision and research in CBT, and the Oxford Cognitive

Therapy Centre (OCTC) has been at the heart of those

developments.

OCTC is part of the Oxford Health NHS Foundation

trust and for over 15 years has offered high quality CBT

training programmes in collaboration with the University

of Oxford Department for Continuing Education.

As well as these Programmes, OCTC also offers an

extensive series of open training events and offers

clinical supervision.

DPhil in Cognitive Behavioural TherapyCourse Director: Dr Freda McManus and Mr David Westbrook

This programme offers the opportunity to undertake a

significant piece of research in the broad field of CBT.

The topic of a DPhil in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

should have a significant focus on issues related to

cognitive behaviour therapy theory or practice e.g.

developing some aspect of the cognitive behavioural

understanding of a particular disorder, developing an

aspect of the cognitive behavioural treatment methods

or their application to a disorder, or theoretical or

methodological issues in relation to cognitive behavioural

practice. A DPhil in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

should focus on a primary research topic relevant to

the theory, principles and practice of interventions that

fall under the umbrella of cognitive behavioural theory

or interventions, including both group and individual

treatments, third wave approaches and self-help based

approaches.
