FFI-IP LOMBOK c NL Agency Ministry of Foreign Affairs DEVELOPMENT AND MONITORING OF SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS SUPPLY CHAINS IN LOMBOK ISLAND - INDONESIA: CANDLENUT 1. The availability of candlenut shells is not enough to meet market demand. Volume and stable supply of alternative biomass is needed. 2. Ensuring community farmer groups understand both the environmental and economic benefits that candlenut can bring as part of a community based agroforestry system. 3. The characteristics of the supply chain made certification challenging, in the end certification for sustainability for local markets did not warrant the cost. Plan Vivo is being developed in one location to show a sustainable land use management system including candlenut. 4. Limited scope to investigate alternative local biomass sources to reduce reliance on importing fuel. 5. Maintaining commitment of Association and project members. 1. Government support for biomass and environmental benefit avident trough Memorandum of Understanding between FFI and West Lombok District government on “Develompment of renewable energy to support land and forest rehabilitation in West Lombok Regency”. 2. Candlenut shell testing by project partner show it is a technically and economically viable alternative to kerosene, coal and firewood for tobacco curing. 3. Supply side: Candlenut sourced from across West Nusa Tenggara Province. In Lombok, the project team worked with 25 community farmer groups for land and forest rehabilitation on 1 468 ha using candlenut and intercropping. A total of 473 840 candlenut seedlings planted. 4. Demand side: In 2012, 400 tonnes of candlenut shell began being used by tobacco farmers receiving assistance from PT ELI and PT Sadhana Ariefnusa. In 2013, PT ELI alone have increased their requirement to 1000 tonnes of candlenut and are sourcing remaining requirements from other biomass sources. 5. Strong company commitments to sustainable sourcing of fuel for tobacco help drive demand and create the biomass market. Project Successes 6. Infrastructure provided by the project and managed by project partner Sustainable Trade and Consulting have enabled the logistics. 7. Partnership with many stakeholders from government, NGO, community and private sector in the field help community empowerment, water and soil conservation, land and forest rehabilitation. 8. A new district government policy developed to support alternative renewable energy. Project Challenges
