rearranging and injecting program into old buildings to recharge the activity level. The programs injected have solid foundations in the existing programs of the town but are taken a step further. To make new spatial conditions appropriate to the place, to the daily routine, activities and the mood, though also challenging the existing perceptions of what is the town and its identity,
The magic of the real” – of the physical, of substance, of the things around me that I see and touch, that i smell and hear. Sometimes – the magic is conveyed by a specific architecture or landscape, a specific milieu, its suddenly there; it has materialized like the measured growth of the soul, un noted at first.” -unknown
What happens to a town structure when there is less people. Many places become an in between space without specific program and “empty space”. But is there such a thing as “empty space” ?It is the atmosphere of places and spaces that kindle our emotion, and the physical presence of the things constitutes the spaces in which we live.
Uncertainty / Transformation / Disorientation
a towns position as uncertain to its own future, yet reluctant or powerless to change its path, leaves its inhabitants in a flux between flight or surrender in a struggle for the city to reproduce the story of itself and its identity
The Arctic House includes answers to local needs like a new marketsquare for local cultural activities; amongst others, as an eventplace for the annual international snowballcompetition hosted by Vardø each winter.

Cold North / Abandonment / Transition / Struggle
How is it to live in this town? How do the inhabitants define themselves, their town and their identity? In which way do they feel a sense of belonging to their place and how is it articulated?
Our perception is colored by the many news flashes from this city, the pollution, the dead nature and the inevitable misery of the people living there. However the situation, people still live in Nikel and their perception of their place is different.

In Vardø, the sun is only shining in the summer-months. As there is always a bigger need for heating in cold areas, even in summer, there is actually more efficient using solarcells in the north than in the south during the summermonths. the diagram shows the efficiency of using solar heat in the north.
solar thermal-colletors heats water and is not temperature dependent. During periods of low demand for heating, collected heat can be lead into an isolation tank and stored for later use.
The roofs are about 400m2. Solarcollectors collect 300kwh per m2 / 400m2 roof x 150 kwh per m2 = 60 000 kwh per m2, per year.

DEBATING THE ARCTIC FUTURE
People got smitten by this sudden burst of colour and activity. This new positive energy burst out in...knitting!
The arctic ice has melted about 40% since 1979. if this continues, both the northwestern and thenortheastern passage will be open for shipping over the arctic in just a few years. this will shorten one of the biggest european shippingroutes, rotterdam - japan/china with 15 out of 30 days.
this and the rescourseharvesting of oil and gas in the arctic will mean big opportunities, but also enormous threats for the people, and especially the indigenous people, living in the arctic.
