Cambodia: 2016 Year End Dinner

On 10 December 2016, R&T Sok & Heng Law Office hosted a party to mark the end of another successful year. The event was held outdoors to allow the team to breathe fresh air and relax. The team was served barbeques, tasty homemade foods and a free flow of liquors and drinks. The highlight of the dinner party was the much-anticipated lucky draw. Everyone went home with a prize and a big smile.

On 10-12 November 2016, R&T Sok & Heng Law Office had its local retreat in Siem Reap Province, ranked no. 5 in TripAdvisor’s list of world’s top 25 destinations. The team had a chance to taste delicious local foods and visit “one of the most inspired monuments ever conceived by the human mind”

1, Angkor Wat. They went on a

memorable bike tour surrounding the area, passing by many of Cambodia’s ancient temples such as Bayon, Baphuon and Terrace of Elephants. They also traveled for more than one hour by boat from the coast to the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia, Tonle Sap Lake, to experience the lifestyle of the locals of a floating village there. The long hour-ride paid off as they were able to have a breathtaking view of the sunset.

R&T Sok & Heng Law Office went to Kampong Plok High School, Siem Reap Province for its first ever Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) event on 11 November 2016. Kampong Plok High School is the only high school in

the Floating Village in Siem Reap Province and is accessible only by boat. A handful of students are enrolled but a low percentage graduate as many quit schooling due to poor family conditions. The R&T Sok & Heng Law Office team received a warm welcome from the students and principal for their support for the rural community, including the school. Hundreds of textbooks and materials such as notebooks and stationery were distributed to the students. Books for the school library were also donated. Partner Sieng Deline shared with the students his many good experiences in his professional and academic life. Rajah & Tann Shanghai Representative Office’s (“SRO”) lawyers, staff and their families packed their bags and

went to Guilin (桂林), Guangxi Province, China for their firm trip on 15 -18 September 2016. They spent their time

at Club-Med of Guilin (桂林), and went on nature trip such as a visit to the famous river (Li River,漓江). They also

organised a party to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

On 2 December 2016, Christopher & Lee Ong ("CLO") held its annual Christmas and New Year Dinner in

Ekkamai, Publika, Kuala Lumpur. Partners, senior associates, associates, staff and some clients came together to celebrate the close of 2016.



Malaysia: Secret Santa Gift Exchange

In early December, CLO's Christmas elves went around the firm with a ballot box for everyone in CLO to pick a name at random. Partners, associates, senior associates and staff would be the Secret Santa for the person whose name they picked from the ballot box. On 22 December 2016, the CLO team had a Christmas and November & December Birthday tea party where the Christmas gifts were distributed by the Christmas elves.

In September 2016, the CLO team headed to Tanjung Jara Resort, Kuala Terengganu for a short weekend getaway. The theme for CLO’s 2016 Firm Trip was “Murder Mystery”, where the partners, associates and staff were divided into 7 different groups: Pink Panther, Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Gadget, James Bond, Men In Black, Charlie’s Angels and Scooby Doo. The teams participated in various team-building games and each team performed a routine incorporating their assigned “Murder Weapon”. On the last night of the Firm Trip, CLO held its annual dinner where everyone came dressed up in white with adornment that represented their respective team colours.

The Rajah & Tann Myanmar team comprising its lawyers, staff and their families held its annual office trip on 16 - 20 November 2016. This year’s trip was to Shan State (Kalaw, Inlay, Taunggyi), the hilly region in the north -eastern part of Myanmar.


The Rajah and Tann Myanmar team held its annual Thadingyut festival celebration dinner on 27 October 2016 at the Market, Melia Hotel. We were joined by Lee Hock Chye, Managing Partner of Christopher & Lee Ong, to celebrate this occasion. Thadingyut is the lighting festival of Myanmar.



Singapore: 2016 Year-End Party

Rajah & Tann Singapore had its Year-End Party on 29 December 2016 with the theme, "Fun in the Sun". Aside from having a wide selection of sumptuous food, lawyers and staff also participated in various games. Winners in the lucky draw went home with prizes including electronic gadgets and shopping vouchers. Staff who rendered long service with Rajah & Tann Singapore were also presented with certificates of appreciation for their loyalty to the firm.




Devathas Santianathan from the International Arbitration Practice was adjudged 2nd

runner-up in The Christopher Bathurst Essay Prize 2016, an annual essay competition sponsored by leading London commercial barristers’ chambers, Fountain Court Chambers. Participants were asked to submit an entry on the question about the application of the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards 1958. Entrants were judged on a variety of criteria, such as originality, critical analysis, succinctness, clarity, persuasiveness and pragmatism. The competition is named in honour of the late Christopher Bathurst QC (Viscount Bledisloe QC), a senior member of Fountain Court Chambers who developed a substantial practice in Southeast Asia, particularly Singapore. The event was supported by the Singapore Academy of Law.


About 15 lawyers and staff of Rajah & Tann Singapore and their families spent a Saturday morning helping with the packing and distribution of dry rations to the Young Women's Christian Association (“YWCA”) beneficiaries in

Buangkok on 12 November 2016. The volunteers packed 80 bags of dry goods and distributed them to needy families residing in the Buangkok Crescent area. YWCA's island-wide dry rations distribution programme targets low and middle income families who do not receive public assistance. It seeks to ease the financial burdens faced by these families by providing for their basic necessities.




A total of 52 lawyers and staff, including family and friends, participated in the Great Eastern Women's Run 2016, Asia’s largest all-women’s run on 13 November 2016. Rajah & Tann Singapore was the corporate participant with the most number of registrants at this event. Our participants took part in all 3 three categories: 5km, 10km and 21.1km. Well done!


The Chulalongkorn University (“CU”) Clerkship Fair on 28 October 2016 provided our lawyers with an opportunity

to meet law students and answer many questions about Rajah & Tann. Our team at the event was headed by CU alumni Visitsak Arunsuratpakdee and included Suwapak Jaru-ampornpan, Wisanee Koopthanaroj, Nichapat Pongchamroen, Nutdanai Jitjumrong. Many of the students were interested in learning about our regional network and wide range of practice areas. The Fair was jointly held by the Faculty of Law and the Law Alumni, chaired by the previous dean, Assoc. Prof. Tithiphan Chuerboonchai. Assoc. Prof. Tithiphan also dropped by our booth and took pictures with our team. After giving a presentation regarding Rajah & Tann's network and internship program, Ms. Chanisa Ngamapichon, a representative from the Faculty of Law, presented Visitsak with a CU souvenir.




Sui Lin Teoh and Yingrak Treesaranuwattana volunteered their time on 2 November 2016 to participate in the mock interview session organised by AmCham for its 90 university scholarship students. The event was organised to assist students to prepare for the job market. It was also the first time many of the students had experienced interviews in the English language. Sui Lin and Yingrak each interviewed six students during the morning. Both were impressed by their commitment, as well as the difficult personal circumstances that many had overcome in order to complete their degrees. We will continue to support this initiative in the future, as it also presents a good opportunity for our senior lawyers to practice their interviewing skills.


Bangkok office attorneys attended the Thammasat University Law Firm Open House 2016. It was an opportunity to meet law students and tell them about our firm, legal careers generally, and possible participation in our summer internship program. Many of our partners, such as Managing Partner Surasak Vajasit, graduated from Thammasat University, which is one of the major law faculties in Thailand. Our Thammasat alumni, partner Supawat Srirungruang, and associates Nichapat Pongchamroen, Nutdanai Jitjumnong and Thamolwan Cheewakriengkrai, spent several hours talking to students at the event. By the end of the event, we received more than 120 internship applications - a new record for us!
