Salute to the Women

International Wom-en’s Day, originallycalled InternationalWorking Women’s Dayis celebrated on March8 every year. It isheartening to see thatwomen are coming tothe fore from the low-est strata of society andare clinching the topspot and that includesclimbing Mount Ever-est at the age of 13 aswell.

First and the fore-most is women’s sense

of self worth, whichgoes a long way inbuilding confidenceamong women of thisgeneration. Womenare not caged parrot asin olden days and theyare free to go aroundand achieve things invarious field with con-fidence and convic-tion. Women rule theroost in the offices, com-panies and at the sametime make our dreamcome true in our house-hold as well. Womenare confidence personi-fied and work hard toachieve targets in thestipulated time. Wom-en’s day brings out thebest of the best in aworld dominated bymen.

The purpose of thisarticle is not to damp-en woman’s spirit butto give the pride of placefor them. I am not say-

ing that you stop cele-brating this special day.All I am saying is thatthis Women’s Day, lookaround you. Do you seeor know someone whoneeds help? A womanwho is probably not aslucky as you? Lend hera hand, help her out. Ifthat is not feasible, be-cause I know a lot ofsuch women are justnot ready to come out ofthe situation, then lendthem a shoulder or anear. And when they areready, they will let youknow.

We generally propa-gate the need for theequal access to opportu-nities and resources towomen. Despite all theefforts taken in an In-dependent India, wom-en suffer in silence. In-

dia still has a high num-ber of female foeticide,in some places it getsworse—a new bornbaby girl’s neck issnapped so that the bur-den in the family is de-stroyed forever. Her or-deal does not end there, often one hears of mar-riages stalled or turn-ing sour owing to dow-ry or due to the lack ofit. Domestic violence, verbal abuse, crueltyare all sometimes justa part of lives of so manywomen in our country.Leaders should findways and means tomake much easier wayof survival of womenwithout harming themin anyway.

Women should begiven the power to reg-ulate and control theirown lives in a respect-able manner. It is timeto give respect and take

respect from the betterhalf rather than fight-ing for trivial matters.Money plays villain. But women work as thewatchdogs, take pru-dent decisions by sav-ing money for the rainydays and keep a coolcomposure during bothrain and shine. Wom-en transact online toinvest in shares andhelp the family duringfinancial difficulties.Even without soundeducational back-ground they manageaccounts better thanmen.

Women come out inopen without fear andtheir ability to contrib-ute to more social andeconomic order surpris-es all including men.Despite all their at-

tributes to the society, the researchers at theMichigan Universityfound that 10% of thewomen surveyed hadexperience the most se-vere form of harass-ment in the male-dom-inated environments. We had a womanPrime Minister and aPresident in the pastbut the outlook on wom-en have not changedmuch. Leave alone theaccolades, awards andfelicitations on this day,let also have a broaderoutlook in dealing withwomen issues in thedays to come and cele-brate the womanhoodin the best way possi-ble in a competitiveworld where there is nodifference between menand women.

Timely action is the need of the hourThe Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation as well as the Panvel

City Municipal Corpoation have realized their role as an authorityfor regulating development activity in Navi Mumbai. Their deci-sion to demolish unauthorized constructions appears to be a stepin this direction. A brief survey of the city has revealed some star-tling figures with respect to illegal constructions. It was found thatin Navi Mumbai too, there are ample examples of unauthorizedstructures. This sorry state of affairs could have been easily avoidedhad the authorities realized their duties on time and had they tak-en stern measures against the defaulters right in the beginning. To add to the problem, most of these structures are today inhabit-ed by the innocent occupants/buyers and therefore any actionagainst these is bound to create great deal of opposition, furoreand legal tussles.

Illegal constructions grew rapidly especially in Gaothan areasfew years back. Hundreds of these have either been sold or rent-ed out. NMMC instead of taking action against appears to be en-couraging their growth by providing them with all the essentialamenities like drinking water, electricity, drainage connections etc.In many residential buildings, ground floors or stilts have beenconverted to commercial shopping complexes, garages, workshopsetc. but no action is ever taken against them. Had the timely ac-tion been taken, the menace could have been curbed in its infancy. However, only recently NMMC seems to have undergone a changein its policy. It has now started unleashing its whip against theillegal structures.

While there is no denying that illegal constructions should notbe encouraged and the defaulters should be severely punished, but to demolish the structure especially when these are occupiedby the residents, is not the correct step. The best course of actionat this stage would perhaps be to regularize these illegal or irreg-ular constructions. The builders should be fined heavy penaltiesand the illegal constructions, if not yet sold, should be taken overby the authorities. Only those structures which hinder the devel-opment process like extension to the hotels, shops etc. which blockthe footpaths and the pathways should be demolished. Action ofregularizing illegal structures should not generate a feeling of weakadministration. To avoid that, the builders should be fined in geo-metric progression to their offence. Since the authorities are equal-ly responsible for such constructions stern action should be takenagainst them as well. Osteoporosis isan ailment that com-prises of loss in bonedensity, resulting inweak bones, easilycausing fractures. Our bodies regular-ly absorb and recon-struct bone tissue;Osteoporosis iscaused when thereis an imbalance inthis process. C.K. Subramaniam

Chetan Bhagathas written his sev-enth novel and thistime with ‘ One Indi-an Girl” he has add-ed another bauble tobrand Bhagat. Slow-ly and steadily he hasgone feminist in hisown right. The bookis priced at Rs.176.

Having seen thein and out of life at theage of 42, ChetanBhagat is an Indian

author, columnist, screenwriter, televi-sion personality andmotivational speaker, known for his Englishnovels about youngurban middle-classIndians. He was ableto grasp the pulse ofbook readers andmade a mark withhis 6 novels in thepast. He was able togarner glory with hisearlier books and thisone is a standout one. From the author ofblockbuster novelsFive Point Someone,One Night At the CallCenter, The 3 Mis-takes of My Life, 2States, and Revolu-tion 2020 and HalfGirlfriend comes acrazy story from thepoint of view of a girl

about love, dreams, career and feminismin modern India.

Unlike olden timewriters, Bhagat hasthrown caution towind to mention fem-inism in fine print. Feminism does notmean that they donot want to look afterthe home and thinkabout the husbandand up keeping thefamily rituals on aroutine basis. ‘OneIndian Girl’ is about

an Indian girl who isintelligent and suc-cessful, because ofwhich she finds it dif-ficult to get love.

Mark Twain lostnearly all his fortuneas he invested thebulk of his book prof-its in Paige Composi-tor, the 19th centuryinvention, whichsought to replace thetypewriter. However,Bhagat is not going tobe overawed withfeminist topic and hasworked on various as-pects of a woman in anutshell with deeprooted analysis in hisown style. Youngsterswill love to have aglance at the book forthe excitement it hasgiven for the teenag-ers and the old alike.

Follow traffic disciplineThis refers to your editorial Following traffic

discipline” (NB- March 4). It is a matter of factthat traffic problem is increasing day by day andis going to be much dangerous for the lives ofcitizens. Driving is worst in here. No one follows the traffic rules andeven not the traffic police can handle. Bikers are often a headache andwe need to focus more on such offenders.

The other example of neglecting while driving or riding are usinghand phone while driving, driving when you are sleepy, driving underthe influence of drugs or alcohol and playing loud music while driving. All of this reckless act can be overcome by taking some steps such as useBluetooth phone devices when receiving or making a call while driving. If the authorities are interested in proper traffic management, the RTOsneed to be modernised and upgraded.

Duty timings of traffic cops should also be extended to man this busyjunction to check erring motorists. Moreover, we may increase parkingcharges and impose heavy penalties for unauthorised parking to reducethe use of private vehicles. The civic body must urge people to use publictransport as far as possible to reduce traffic congestion, save fuel andreduce the pollution level in the city.

Women are the most beautiful creation of GodOn March 8, we will celebrate International Women’s Day. Interna-

tional Women’s Day is the day when we celebrate how much womenhave achieved. We celebrate the many ways that women have advancedin various careers and roles as independent, autonomous persons able tostrive toward their full potential. We celebrate the many creative andinnovative ways that women are successfully contributing to the globalcommunity.

Women are the most beautiful creation of God. They are the angel onthe earth who makes our life a wonderful experience all together. Imag-ining life without a woman is quite hard-hitting. This angel shakes thecradle with one hand and the earth with the other hand. The fact is thatall the great people of the world are born from the womb of a woman andit is a woman from whom those great people have taken their initialteachings and that is the reason we have always emphasised upon giv-ing due respect to women in their life. That is why Women’s Day iscelebrated with so much zeal and fanfare all over the world.

Jubel D’Cruz, Mumbai

Not a safe city anymoreThis refers to your report “Computer teacher arrested for molesting

more than 50 girl students” (Feb 28). Mumbai was once termed the safestcity for women in the country but now, it could well earn the sobriquet ofthe most unsafe city. As the city grows rapidly, people are becoming so-cially more isolated where nobody cares what is happening to the personnext door. Women were silently suffering earlier but due to presence ofmedia and sensitization of police, they are now coming forward to speakagainst all types of crime.

Violence against the weaker sex brings out the manly demeanor of oursociety where oppression of women is deemed as a custom. While seriouslaw reform is the need of the hour, it also should be taken into consider-ation that the planners, administrators, and law enforcement agencieswork efficiently and diligently in that direction.

This diminishing social protection has made vulnerable, especially work-ing and college going women in the city to crimes like eve-teasing, moles-tation and rape. It is noticed that the prevalence of crimes against womenin a certain place depends on a large extent to the social ambience of thatplace. The punishment for battering, molestation, sexual molestation andunlawful threat must be increased. Projects must be launched for a bet-ter cooperation between the police, the social services and other relevantparties.

Government should come out with much more essence and urgency tocheck the indecent behaviour against women folks, and the need to chartout stern measures on the part of administrative authorities for curbingdown such events. People also need to come out with determination againstsuch evils and not be a moot spectator wherein a daughter, or a sister, ora wife, or a mother is crying for alms. Wake up Mumbaikars unless it istoo late!

Time and again Ikeep writing aboutchildren and I have re-alized that it is the sub-ject that the universekeeps bringing to me.

With all the casesthat come to me, I havenoticed that the mosteffective is when par-ents follow my adviceto spend time withtheir children. It savesmoney and createsgreat bonding betweenbe the child and theparent. These childrenalso grow up to have a

Patience is a virtue

high level of securityand are compassionateabout other living be-ings on this Earth.

It was therefore asad feeling when I reada few days ago that achild jumped becausethe father gave a high-er end mobile to the old-er sibling. Why in theearth would someonehave such a fragilemindset to be not ableto handle a no or waitfor the time to comewhen he would also getwhat he wanted?

As I always saythat children role mod-el their parents andthey watch and learn.Patience is definitelyone’s characteristicwhich develops in chil-dren and would be agreat virtue in

adulthood. So let us vi-sualise a scenario of afamily sitting in a res-taurant. The child issmall. The father andthe mother order food

and tell the waiter, please bring it quickly. After sometime thewaiter serves the oth-er table and the parentagain reminds thewaiter that they wantit fast. Now this bodylanguage, verbal com-munication is being

heard by the child andhe soon learns thatwaiting is not a goodthing, but getting itfast is what is wanted.

Second scenariowhere the fam-ily may be in acar and the fa-ther or motherdriving gets ir-ritated at thelong signals. The child isagain watch-ing and learn-ing that wait-

ing is not liked by theparent.

Third scenario, waiting in a queue andgetting irritated.

What I am givingexamples is actually ofday to day life. But thesesmall examples arewhat slowly makes the

child also grow up to bean inpatient person.

At home he thentells his mother to giveeverything fast as shealso tells him eat fast, shower fast, dress upfast etc.

We all need to un-derstand that patienceleads to good decisionmaking, calmness, good health, good re-sults. Finally it leadsto good emotional quo-tient which is the lifesaver.

There is a differencein being slow or callousand being patient. Soteach your children tobe patient by first prac-ticing it yourself.

1. Let children waitfor their turn. Do notmake things beast forthem

2. Let them waitand understand, every-thing cannot be in-stant.

3. Teach them toenjoy good slowly, sipwater, soup, juiceswhile enjoying it.

4. Walk in the parkand play in the park. But also watch theplants, flowers, birds, hear, smell and enjoy.

5. Write and readand enjoy their studies.

6. Concentration onbreathing will enhancetheir lives and buildpatience.

7. Waiting for theirturn while playing willreduce anxiety.

As adults also followthe above and we shallhave children truly en-joying and living lifehappily.Salma Prabhu is Clinical
