New Noxious Weed listings to affect local landowners

bull CLASS 1 WEEDS are generally not present in the State but may occur to a limited extent all plants must be eradicated from the land and the land must be kept free of the plant They are lsquonotifiablersquo weeds and if located landowners must notify Far North Coast Weeds within 24 hours of identifying their presence

In February the Noxious Weeds Act schedule of noxious weeds was updated to reflect changes in the weed species determined to require management for the protection of primary production or the environment from detrimental and costly impacts

These changes will require landowners to take control actions if these scheduled species are detected on their land

Miconia (M calvescens) Isolated occurrences only and known as the lsquopurple plaguersquo in the rainforests of Tahiti and Hawaii This small tree has large leaves to 70cm long the underside of the leaf is a distinctive iridescent purple with three large veins running the length of the leaf from base to tip Small black to purple fruits containing up to 200 seeds are eaten and spread by fruit-eating birds The attractive foliage has led to its sale through the nursery trade

Tropical Soda Apple (Solanum viarum) An erect shrub to 2m with densely hairy lobed leaves (10-20cm long) with white flowers and is covered in cream coloured prickles Immature fruit are pale green with dark green veins turning yellow with maturity A native of South America it can invade open to semi-shaded areas including pastures roadsides and riparian areas It can dominate pastures reducing their carrying capacity and impact on bushland biodiversity by outcompeting native plants It has been spread by cattle ingesting the fruit Removal of fruit prior to spraying or slashing prior to fruiting have proved effective control methods

Young Miconia plant (FNCW) Underside of mature leaf (FNCW)

bull CLASS 2 WEEDS pose a potentially serious threat to primary production or the environment of the region but may only be present in limited numbers If identified they must be eradicated from the land and the land kept free of these plants and landowners must notify Far North Coast Weeds within 24 hours of identifying their presence

Cecropia (C peltata) Native of Central and South America and the West Indies an evergreen tree to 20m notable for very large leaves and a hollow trunk ringed with leaf scars The leaves are from 10-60cm wide with numerous lobes and an underside of white hairs Separate male and female trees bearing reproductive parts in clustered spikes fruit are cylindrical ovoid and somewhat flattened 3-4 mm long with soft sweet flesh around many small seeds Young Cecropia plant (FNCW) Cecropia flower (FNCW)

Asparagus Fern Species scheduled include Asparagus Fern (Asparagus virgatus) a Climbing Asparagus (A africanus) Sicklethorn (Afalcatus) and Ming Asparagus Fern (A macowanii syn A retrofractus) All have white flowers and fleshy fruits and establish readily in bushland by bird spread seed and garden waste dumping They can smother native plants and develop underground root mats or radiating crowns of tubers that persist after plants are killed These mats may impede native plant regeneration and promote the growth of other weeds

Asparagus virgatus (Sheldon Navie)

Asparagus africanus (Hilary Cherry)

Asparagus falcatus (Sheldon Navie)

Asparagus retrofactus (Sheldon Navie)

Asparagus plumosus (Sheldon Navie)

Asparagus aethiopicus (Hillary Cherry)

Climbing Asparagus Fern (A plumosus) and Ground Asparagus (A aethiopicus) are listed as Class 4 whose spread must be inhibited They are also scheduled as Weeds of National Significance

Paper Mulberry (Broussonetia payrifera) - Not yet in the Tweed but recorded regionally A deciduous tree from Asia to 15m tall leaf shape varies from deeply lobed to not lobed the upper surface is rough and the lower surface has dense soft hairs distinguishing it from native speciesSeparate male and female plants and milky sap with 1-4cm red to orange fruits eaten and the seeds spread by birds Its rapid growth ability to sucker and form dense thickets give the weed a competitive advantage over native species while its pollen is thought to cause inhalant allergies

Paper Mulberry lobed leaf (FNCW) Paper Mulberry (FNCW)

bull CLASS 3 WEEDS pose a potentially serious threat to primary production or the environment of an area to which the weed order applies and is likely to spread Land owners are required to fully and continuously control suppress and destroy these species on their land

Giant Devilrsquos Fig (Solanum chrysotrichum and S torvum) Familiar to landholders in the Tweed this shrub to 4m tall and originally from Central America possesses downward curving spines and large deeply divided leaves globular fruit are yellow when mature Fruits are distributed by birds primarily Small plants can be removed by hand while mature plants require mechanical andor chemical control

Thorns on GDF stem (FNCW) Roadside specimen of GDF (FNCW)
