India Stonemart 2017 was inaugurated by Shri Rajpal Singh Shekhawat, Hon'ble Minister for Industr ies , Government of Rajasthan on

nd2 February, 2017 with Hon'ble Industries Minister urging Industry for global leadership of India in dimensional stone sector.

Shri Shekhawat went on to add that this year's theme - 'Stones for Sustainability' was most apt in the present scenario and the industry should absorb whatever changes the new GST regime will bring. “The Stone industry should not be afraid of the implementation of the GST by the Centre and should rather take the opportunity to stand on its own feet,” he said.

“There is a tremendous opportunity for the growth of the stone industry due to the schemes launched by the present government such as the setting up of 100 smart cities in the future and 'Housing For All' by 2020 and to implement all these schemes the stone industry will play a pivotal role,” he emphasized.

He said that industry is facing stiff competition from ceramic tiles, wood and other material and it is important to look for solutions to compete. “You should be ready to make stone tiles in various sizes, shapes and finishes for timely completion of projects and encourage dry fixing techniques,” he told a packed audience of exhibitors, buyers, traders and other participants from the industry.

He called upon architects to take a lead in promoting stone in construction industry. “Architects have a sense of the properties required

in the material for a specific application and can thus help in upgrading usage of dimensional stones”, was his message to them. He urged the architects to maximize the use of dimensional stones in their projects, as when he looks at a building it seems that the structure is indeed growing but lacks the growth of its architectural texture. “I appeal to my architect friends to use more of this magic material - stones - as they whisper, they echo and they also have a soul”, said Shekhawat.

Addressing the gathering Rajasthan's Chief Secretary, Shri OP Meena said that the stone sector in India has started introducing modern techniques and technologies and the results have started trickling in. “We have to modernize the mining and processing activities in an environment friendly manner to improve productivity with zero wastage,” he said and added that there was an urgent need to minimize health hazards for workers and provide them with medical cover and regular health checkups.

Shri Ashok Dhoot, Vice Chairman CDOS urged the State government to consider setting up an Export Promotion Council for the stone industry after getting clearance from the Union Government. Similarly, he also requested the State government to give 'industry status' to dimensional stone sector to give it a fillip. He also urged the government to also consider keeping the stone industry in the 5 percent of the tax slab under GST.

CONCURRENTEVENT

The Second edition of Jaipur Architecture Festival (JAF) was organized concurrent with India Stonemart 2017 at JECC during February 02 - 04, 2017. The theme of the festival was “Invisible Routes-Celebrating Architectural Splendor in Stone”.

The three day festival was inaugurated by Shri Yunus Khan, Hon'ble Minister for PWD and Transport, Government of Rajasthan.

Jaipur Architecture Festival was organized by CDOS & FICCI in association with Council of Architecture and Indian Institute of Architects as the knowledge partners. Festival was also supported by Indian Institute of Interior Designers - Jaipur Regional Chapter and IIA Rajasthan chapter.

Jaipur Architecture Festival has emerged as a unique platform for exchanging ideas on cities of the future. “Since India is planning to build 100 smart cities - exchanging ideas about the best practices in this field around the world will benefit the program,” says renowned architect, social activist and writer Shri Durganand Balsavar, who is the curator of the festival.

“What we are doing is revisiting what the visionary Shri Raja Sawai Jaisingh did, when he undertook to build this magical city Jaipur in stone. He invited architects, astronomers, planners from different regions to contribute”. Similarly at JAF 2017, we have also invited reputed architects from around the world, to deliberate on future cities and also to get an idea of the building craft traditions of Jaipur and stone industry.

During her address at the Jaipur Architecture Festival, Ms. Martha Thorne said that earlier an architect was called the master of a building. Today, the role of architect is changing and a lot of attention has been given to social world of architecture. “Given the leading role of the architect in how cities are envisaged and designed the architect can directly mould the outcomes of a design process for the upliftment of our community's overall quality of life, sustainability, social equity and health. Playing this pivotal role, the architectural community can re-imagine and tackle issues in a holistic manner addressing the larger needs of collective social responsibility,”

she said. Echoing this view of innovation in future, eminent architect Mr. Rajiv Kethpalia said the use of stone in the mega government schemes will depend upon the region where they are being implemented and availability of the material and skilled labour there. “If the skills are not there, how the stone will be used, similarly supply has to be there”.

“We also have to get the message across that stone is safe and secure and doesn't take up time during building activity. Stone cladding for example can be put up very fast,” he said.

Some of the eminent speakers at JAF included Mr. Srdjan Jovanovic Weiss and Ms. Martha Thorne from USA, Mr. Kevin Mark Low from Malaysia, Mr. Tan Szue Hann from Singapore, Mr. Balkrishna Doshi and Mr. Christopher Benninger from India, Mr. Ritu Raj from Nepal, Ms. Beatrice Leanza from China, Mr. Peter Rich from South Africa, Mr. Madhura Prematilleke from Sri Lanka, Mr. Saif Ul Haque from Bangladesh, among others.

SHILPGRAM

Shilpgram is one of the major attractions of Stonemart and as in past, it was a joint initiative of CDOS and RUDA.

Shilpgram is aimed towards providing a platform for artisans to showcase their talent and develop direct business links with domestic and international buyers. With the opportunity of establishing direct linkages and networking, artisans find it easier to sell their products to serious buyers and art connoisseurs.
