Junior Colleges (JCs) & Millennia Institute

JCs and MI primarily prepare students for a tertiary education. JC students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to prepare them for the A- level examinations in 2 years, while MI students 3 years. These skills and knowledge will also prepare students for an university education which is the main aim of an A-level education.

Through the Early Admission Exercise (EAE)

Entry into Polytechnic

The Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) is an aptitude-based admissions exercise that allows students to apply and receive conditional offers for admission to the polytechnics based on their aptitudes and interests, prior to receiving their final grades. It gives the polytechnics greater flexibility to select and admit students on criteria other than their academic grades, thus allowing a wider range of talents to be recognised.

The polytechnics will consider students’1) abilities, strengths and interests in the specific courses that they have applied for2) other outstanding talents and achievements, such as in sports, arts, leadership, entrepreneurship and community service

*Each polytechnic has the discretion to determine its modes of assessment of students’ aptitude and interest, e.g. interviews, portfolios.

Page 49: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

Early Admissions Exercise (EAE)

Eligibility Criteria:

a. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who have registered to sit for the GCE O-Level Examination in the year of the EAE; and

b. International Students enrolled in Government, Government-aided and Independent Schools during the year of the application, and who have registered to sit for the GCE O-Level Examination in the year of the EAE.

ITE Early Admissions Exercise (ITE EAE)

• ITE EAE is an aptitude-based admissions exercise that allows your child to apply and receive a conditional offer for admission to ITE courses based on your child’s aptitude and interest before taking the national exams.

• Student’s relevant work experience and his/her achievements in sports, arts, leadership, entrepreneurship and community service will be considered in the application.

Page 56: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

It’s for those who have aptitudes and interests in specific fields of study

56

• Focus on course-specific aptitudes and interests

• But, non-course-specific achievements, e.g. sports, performing arts, leadership, are also considered

1

You’ll be assessed through different modes• E.g. interviews, aptitude tests, showcasing your

portfolio, depending on the course you apply for

2

All this will take place before your N / O Level exams• If your application is successful, ITE will

give you a conditional offer before you take the N- or O-Level exams

3

Page 57: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

You’ll still have to meet the minimum entry requirements

• Most Nitec or Higher Nitec courses have subject-specific minimum entry requirements

4

But you won’t have to compete for admission to ITE strictly on the basis of how well you do academically compared to everyone else

5

(…or your offer will be revoked)

Page 58: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

58

Things You Could Do Before You Apply

Page 59: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

Explore your interests and develop your strengths

59

• Elective Modules, Advanced Elective Modules; Applied Subjects; Applied Learning Programme

• Work attachments; community / volunteer work

• Course-related school / personal activities, course-related achievements and projects, CCAs

Step 1

Page 60: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

60

Research on the ITE courses you are interested in and related careers in the sector

• Conduct online research, e.g ITE website www.ite.edu.sg

• Visit the ITE ECG Centres that are open for walk-ins

• Talk to your teachers, ECG Counsellors, family/relatives

Step 2

Page 61: Post Secondary Pathways 4E / 5N - Ministry of Education

61

Prepare for your application

Prepare your write-ups

• Short-write-up (100 words) on why you want to enter the course

• Clear and concise descriptions of your interests, passion and relevant skills, experiences and activities participated in

Prepare relevant documents

• Portfolios (where relevant), e.g. samples of creative work done for design courses

• Other examples include evidence of experiences / involvement in course-related activities, CCA records, course-related certificates / awards, latest school-based examination results

• Upload the supporting documents onto the online portal

Prepare for interviews

Some factors for consideration

All Higher Nitec courses have prerequisites, e.g. selected Nitec or relevant ‘O’ Level subjects for direct entry. Please find out more if you wish to pursue specific Higher Nitec courses.

Note:1. Do find out as much information about their possible options to make informed decisions.2. Some Nitec courses allow students to choose from a broader array of Higher Nitec courses

as opposed to others. For example, there is only 1 Higher Nitec course related to Hospitality as opposed to 13 Higher Nitec courses related to Engineering.

3. There are always progression options for different industries, via Higher Nitec or WSQ courses.

4. Always find the best-suited courses for themselves based on their interests, strengths and work values.
