DEAR FRIENDS OF THE CANONS REGULAR: Post Lucem is what you read at the top of this newsletter. fter Johann Sebastian Bach, Healey Willan is the most prolific composer of church music. His daughter Mary

Willan Mason, has managed the Musical Es-tate of Healey Willan, since his death in 1968. While Maestro Willan’s music is known and loved by church choirs, organists and instrumental ensembles the world over, much of his music is no longer in print or has never been published. Thus we are happy to announce that Mary Willan Mason assigned the responsibility of continuing the musical legacy of Healey Willan to the Canons Regular by legally entrusting to us his musical estate. The preservation and renewal of the Church’s treasury of sacred music has always been a major part of the charism of the Canons Regular. Under the direction of Fr. Scott Haynes, S.J.C., the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, has formed the Healey Willan Society in consultation with Mrs. Mary Willan Mason, for the purpose of fostering the musical heritage of Healey Wil-lan. The society will seek to bring

The Can-ons Regular have seven men studying for the priesthood at Holy Apostles Seminary. This upcoming May, with the help of God, Deacon Scott The-lander and Br. Robin Kwan will

be ordained to the Priesthood and Deaconate respectively. In addition, we are pleased to an-nounce that Fr. Dennis Kolinski, S.J.C. has been placed on the faculty at Holy Apostles Seminary to offer courses on the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite as well as on the Liturgy. Please pray for all our brothers and seminarians as they con-tinue their preparation for the priesthood.

rom the day he first enters noviate, the religious is being formed into the im-

age of Christ his Divine Model. This transformation is both in-terior by growth in holiness and virtues, and also exterior by the habit which is the outward sign of consecration. For those going on to the Priesthood, the Sacra-ment of Holy Orders changes the very essence of his soul for all eternity.

The first step of novi-ate is the reception of the full Habit of our community which includes the col-lar, fringed-sash, and Rosary. The day of investiture always falls on December 23rd, the Feast of St. John Cantius. We ask for your prayers for all our novices that received the full Habit this year.

back into print as much of his musical works as possible as well as foster an increase in the public performance of his musical works through audio, film, ra-dio, the Internet and television. When Maestro Willan, on his deathbed, asked his daughter who would promote his music after his death, Mary promised him she would do it. “As Healey Willan passed the

baton to her, he entrusted Mary with the preservation of his musi-cal patrimony. Now Mary has passed that baton into the hands of the Canons Regular,” said Fr. Haynes. After 43 years of per-forming this labor of love, Mary Willan Mason says, “I hope and think my father's question is fi-nally answered and that he is con-tent—all that I could possibly ask.” Mary Willan Mason visiting the Canons Regular in December

t the request of Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, an interna-tional liturgical symposium was held in the Diocese of

Phoenix this past October. The conference, “Council and Con-tinuity” brought together Bishops and Theologians from around the world to discuss the reforms of the Roman Missal since 1962. The event featured an array of speakers including: Bishop Cordileone from the Diocese of Oakland; Bishop Peter J. Elliot, Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne, Australia; Dr. Hans-

Jurgen Feulner, Director of Liturgical Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria; and our own Fr. Frank Phillips. Fr. Phillips was asked to speak about the Liturgical year in the context of the par-ish life. All the talks were informative, revealing, and carried a sense of authen-tic renewal regarding the liturgy in the life of the Church.

n the Feast of Christ the King we were privileged to have Fr. Uwe Michael Lang

of the London Oratory with us to celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form. Fr. Lang is currently working with the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome and is a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church. He also authored the book “Turning Towards the Lord” prefaced by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. This work looks at the importance of Ad Ori-entem—the priest facing the altar dur-ing Mass. He also gave an enlightening lecture entitled “The Sacred Liturgy and Pope Benedict’s Vision.” We wish to thank Fr. Lang for his time and sup-port of the Canons. May God continue to Bless his work.

Fr. Lang celebrates Mass at St. John Cantius Church

ny true Restoration of the Sacred begins with our own lives. If we restore the Sacred within ourselves then God’s Image is seen through the beautiful and holy

temple that He created. True beauty always points back to God, the Author of beauty. This is the case not only for our own lives, but also for the “Domus Dei’ the House of God. Since his arrival at St. John Cantius, parish over 23 years ago, Fr. Frank Phillips dreamed of a complete restoration of the interior of the Church of St. John Cantius. His vision was to return the church to its former days of glory when it was home to thousands of Polish Immi-grants. The many sacrifices made by those generous souls shows that they truly understood the motto that adorns the façade of the church, ‘Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam’—For the Greater Glory of God. The last attempt at restora-tion was in 1933. The pastor at the time, Fr. Walter Bartylak, C.R. was not afraid to embark on a restoration during hard financial times, not unlike our own, because he knew what the Psalmist knew, “Unless the Lord builds the house, in vain do its builders labor.” All that we have is from the Lord and if He is building the house, then we can be confident that He will see it through and provide for our needs. Like Fr. Bartylak during the Great Depression, Fr. Phillips is also moving forward with the resto-ration project in times of financial uncertainty.

Over the years Fr. Phillips has been able to update most of the structural aspects of the building and the things that no one sees like electrical and plumbing work. The final phase is the inte-rior restoration which includes cleaning all the surfaces, re-gilding the capitals and plaster ornamentation, restor-ing the murals, and a complete re-stenciling of all decorative images.

As if the interior restoration wasn’t enough, we are also installing a breathtaking Casavant pipe organ which will be re-furbished to replace the old organ which had run its course. Nicknamed “Tina Mae” after the organist who designed it, the organ was acclaimed as the best organ in Chicago by world re-nowned organist Marcel Dupré. As always, we ask that you keep us in your prayers for the success of both of these efforts as God wills them. These projects are only possible because of those who share the vision with Fr. Phillips and the Canons Regular for a restoration of our ‘House of God’ and ‘Gate of Heaven.’ If you would like to help us financially or otherwise please contact Fr. Frank Phillips for more information.
