Now that the first hurdle in your path towards securing that dream admission in the

hallowed portals of institutes of technology and science has been crossed, take a well

deserved breather. The second and the tougher lap of the race would begin soon.

The post GATE admission process in these institutes is as complicated and competitive, if

not more, as GATE itself. The post GATE admission process in Indian Institutes of

Technologies, Indian Institution of Science and NITs involves a complicated selection and

evaluation process where the best institutes and also the best candidates try and identify

the best fit for their requirements and aspirations.

However, unlike GATE, success in this process requires you to have two important

knowledge bases – One, technical expertise and two, detailed information about availability

of courses, their interview and test process / cut off marks and closing dates.

If you are sure of getting a top 25 rank in your stream, then life is going to be easier for

you. Just walk in, and take admission in the revered Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

However, if you are not that fortunate, life can still be easy and good for you. If you are

expecting a rank between 30 and the 1500, we sincerely advise you to spend some time

with our “post GATE Admission Tool Kit”.

Did you know that with a rank of about 1500, you can get admission in IIT Kharagpur, or a

Mechanical Engineering student with a rank of 50 may get admission in Computer Science

Department in IISc? Or, did you know that you can get admission in IIT Kharagpur with a

rank of 500? A small error in judgment could mean the difference between a seat in IISc

and any of the other institutions.

How To Use The Post GATE Admission Guide

In order to simplify the usage of this kit, we have enlisted the admission processes for each

institute separately. The table lists the various departments along with their specializations,

their eligibility criteria and previous years’ cutoffs for admission (wherever available). Using

this table, an admission seeker can know if his graduate degree meets the requirement or if

his stream in GATE is relevant for that particular specialization. For example, if you are

seeking admission for the Micro Electronics specialization under the electrical department of

IIT Mumbai, then your graduate degree should be in Electrical Engineering, Electronics

Engineering or Computer Science Engineering. Also, for the same specialization, the

candidate should appear in EE or EC or CS in GATE (Please refer to table). The cutoffs for

the electrical department in 2005-06 are given in column 6.

Please Note: The cutoffs in most cases have been obtained from the students currently

pursuing their masters in these institutes and are not part of any official communication of

these institutes. Hence this information should be used more as a guideline for making an

informed decision rather than as a rule.

(2) One can also request for application form with 2 address slips (stickers), along with the demand draft for Rs.700/- for general candidates and Rs.350/- for SC/ST/PH candidates with a copy of appropriate certificate to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012. The DD must be drawn in favor of “Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore”.

(3) Online application – Online submission of application can be made by accessing the IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/admissions w.e.f. 04.02.2008. Online application fee is Rs.500/- for general candidates and Rs.250/- for SC/ST/PH candidates.

3. In case a candidate is willing to apply for both Research and Course (ME/MTECH/MDES), he/she has to buy two brochures and fill in the Basic Data Sheet and appropriate application forms separately.

4. Online applications – The candidate may also submit their applications online. Online applications fee is Rs.500/- for general category and Rs.250/- for SC/ST/PH category. The steps are as follows: The candidate should obtain a DD for the application fee and go to the IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/admissions and fill up the application for appropriate program including the details of DD and submit online. The demand draft must be drawn in favour of the Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on any nationalized banks payable at Bangalore. Candidates are required to take a print out after successful submission. The printed form with candidate’s signature and photograph at appropriate place, and the demand draft should reach the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore-560012 on or before March 24, 2008.

Separate applications should be used for each of the programs. Only one application will be entertained for each program.

IIT Mumbai


1. Candidate can either fill up the application form online or offline. In case of online submission, supporting documents should reach on or before last date. In offline mode, application form can be downloaded from the institute website. The filled up application form along with demand draft (Rs.300/ made in favour of the institute in 2007-08) and score card can be sent for candidature. The form can also be bought at the institute counter or one can request for form by sending draft and self addressed envelope.

2. Each applicant should submit only One Application Form. If more than one application is submitted, only one application will be considered and in that case Institutes' choice will be final and binding on applicant. If you have preferred specialization from more than one Department / Centre / School / ID group, you must submit a corresponding number of sets of photocopies of the completed application form with enclosures properly arranged and stapled. If you do not provide sufficient number of copies you will be considered only for the departments for which the copies are provided.

3. Statement of Purpose (SOP) is to be submitted in case any one is applying to Aerospace Engineering Department/Center for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas.

Candidates using the downloaded form must deposit in person or by post, the completed application form along with crossed demand draft (of Rs.300 for general and Rs.150 for SC/ST/PH) a self addressed stamped post card, and four address slips to Deputy Registrar (PGS&R), IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas, New Delhi-110016.

(2). Application Form and Information Brochure can also be obtained from the Deputy Registrar (PGS&R) IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas, New Delhi 110016 by sending application fee of Rs. 300/- for General candidates (Rs. 150/- for SC/ST/PH candidates) by a crossed Bank Draft drawn in favour of “Registrar, IIT Delhi” payable at SBI, IIT Delhi or Canara Bank, SDA along with a self addressed envelope (25 cm x 20 cm) affixing postage stamps worth Rs. 15/-. The applicant seeking admission to M.Tech. programme of a particular department should fill a separate application form. He/she may give upto four choices in order of preference for the

M.Tech. Programmes available in that department. However, he/she will be considered only for two choices for which he/she is eligible in the order of preference given. In case a candidate is found to have filled more than one form of a particular department, his/her candidature will be cancelled.

The exact date for the test/interview will be communicated by the Department/Centre.

1. Application Forms in 2008-09 are available in any of the following three methods:

(1) Candidates can also obtain the Application Form and Information Brochure by post from / or

personally at the GATE Office, IIT Kharagpur. For this purpose a Demand Draft of Rs 300 (Rs. 150 for SC/ST

candidates) drawn in favour of 'IIT Kharagpur' payable at Kharagpur, West Bengal is to be sent to 'The

Chairman, GATE, IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur 721302, WB' along with a request letter and two self

addressed slips.

(2) Candidates can also download the Application Form and send it with the Demand Draft for the amount

(3) Candidate can also fill up online application form. The duly filled ONLINE printed form, with the

3. Admission procedure in 2008-09 is as follows:

(1). On receipt of a counseling letter (by first week of May, 2008) the applicants are required to report to

the Institute for counseling with the original GATE Scorecard and a Demand Draft (in favour of “IIT

Kharagpur” on any nationalized

bank payable at Kharagpur, West Bengal) for the Autumn semester fee. This non-refundable fee is Rs.

6,200 for GENERAL and OBC Category & for Persons with Disability (PD) and Rs. 3,700 for SC/ST Category.

(2). At the time of counseling, applicants, one-by-one in order of merit as per GATE score, will be offered

seats depending upon their eligibility and options given under ‘Choice of Course’ in the Application Form.

(3). The applicant must produce the relevant Certificates in Original. Selection within the categories

(PD/ST/SC/OBC/GN) will be dictated by the GATE performance and the ‘Choice of Course’ given by the

applicant.

(4). Selected applicants will be given an offer of admission on the spot and they will hand over the original

GATE Scorecard and the Bank Draft towards fees and deposits at the designated counter on the same day.

Those applicants

4. A candidate may apply maximum for four Departments and 14 different programmes but ONLY ONE

Application Form is to be filled-up. However, fee of Rs. 100/- per additional Department shall be payable

5. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

A minimum aggregate score of 60% or 6.00 CGPA on 10 point scale for General

candidates and 55% or 5.50 CGPA on 10 point scale for SC/ST candidates at the

qualifying examination is essential for all the above programmes.

6. ADMISSION CRITERIA

Admission will be made on the basis of either GATE score only or GATE score and

Interview/Written Test. For Sponsored candidates the admission will be on the basis of Interview/Written

Test and relevant experience. There will be cut offs for calling the candidates for Interview/Written Test

and/or for preparing merit list for different programmes for different categories of candidates. The

normalized GATE score of different papers will be used to prepare the merit list. The normalized GATE

1. Applicant can fill up the application form in following ways:

(1) Online Submission: - Applicants, who will be submitting the application form on line, are requested to

take the print out of the acknowledgement having the Application Number. The Draft of Rs.100/ from any

Nationalized Bank for each Course of Study in favour of ‘Jadavpur University’ along with the print out of

the acknowledgement has to be sent to the Principal Secretary, Faculty of Engg. & Tech., Jadavpur

University within the last date (i.e. 11.04.2008). The applicants are requested to keep one copy of

acknowledgement for future reference.

(2) Offline Submission: - Applicants can download the form and information brochure from the university

website www.jadavpur.edu. Properly filled in Downloaded Application Form is to be sent by Post to the

2. Candidates should use separate application form for separate course/s. A candidate can not apply in more

2) The Wait Listed Candidate will be asked to appear on 16.06.2008 at 11 a.m. to 12:30p.m. for

considering his/her name against the existing vacancy of different courses in the Office of Faculty Council

of Engg. & Tech. and the list of successful candidate will be displayed on the next day in the F.E.T. Office

as well as University web site.

3) Such successful waitlisted candidates selected for admission will be asked to get themselves admitted

by 19.06.2008 failing which their selection may be treated as cancelled.

appear on 23.06.2008 at 11 a.m. to 12:30p.m. for consider his/her name against the existing vacancy of

different courses in the Office of Faculty Council of Engg. & Tech. And the list of successful candidate will

be displayed on the next day in the F.E.T. Office as well as University web site.

5) Such successful waitlisted candidates select ed for admission will be asked to get themselves admitted

on 02.07.2008 failing which their selection may be treated as cancelled.

Remarks:- The admission procedure of IIT Kanpur is very complex. Admission is based both on direct seat( Rank/Score) and test/interview conducted at the institute.

There is direct admission in Computer Science
