SCHOOL SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM’S REPORT This is our last newsletter for the year so we would like to thank you all for your constant support and encouragement and allowing us to support your children’s growth and development throughout the year! It’s important we celebrate the wide range of successes each student has had throughout 2019. Some of this growth has been academic, some has been social, and other growth and development has been emotional, behavioural and perhaps, spiritual. Although we award only a small number of special ‘Presentation Day Awards’, we know that every student has made gains and deserves some form of acknowledgement for their effort and progress. Please take the time to have these personal conversations about successes and future goals over the upcoming school holiday break. We would like to thank our exceptional hardworking teaching staff, office staff, support staff our cleaners and general assistant. We have an outstanding school staff and we are honoured to work with them all. Congratulations and thank you also to the many people who assist us in providing the multitude of additional programs and opportunities to assist our students to reach their potential, including our P&C, parent helpers, canteen staff, music tutors, scripture teachers, school psychologist, District Guidance Officer and Home School Liaison Officer. Without their invaluable input, we would not achieve such wonderful success across our school. We wish all our students who are leaving Parklea to either attend High School or other schools, happiness and success as they continue their educational journey. As we commence the school holidays, we send a reminder about keeping our students safe over the holiday period. Please see below the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ leaflet included in this newsletter. This important information is presented to us from NSW Police and we encourage you to discuss this with your children. Our current Year 6 cohort as well as families and staff leaving our school at the end of this year will be part of our farewell arch on 18th December. There will no doubt be a few tears, however, it is a time to celebrate and wish our Year 6 students all the very best for High School. We know they are going to be amazing in their secondary schooling adventure! 1

On Friday 29th November, Parklea Public School held theirannual Performance Night. Students performed andshowcased their talents in a variety of musical performances. To get the night started the teachers performed their owndance number, choreographed by Mrs Coburn, to the song‘Party Rock Anthem’. The teachers did a fabulous job sharingtheir shuffling and ‘cool’ dance moves with the crowd.

Students from Kindergarten to Stage Three were eager toperform a song or Christmas carol that they had beenrehearsing all term with their stage group. Thank you to allclassroom teachers for their hard work supporting the studentsto learn the lyrics and their wonderful dance moves.

The students were very excited to have a visit from Santa andParky and were also lucky to see performances by the Juniorand Primary Choirs as well as Kindergarten, Stage One andStage Two dance groups. The night ended with an amazingperformance by Stage 3 dance which then transitioned into aflash mob with the whole school performing together to ‘Let’sget Ridiculous’.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all staff, parentsand students who helped to make this night such a success. A

Learning to Learn Team update!

Reading: Keeping Brains Active Through the Summer

Ring-fence the time to read

The summer holidays are bound to be busy, but 10–15 minutesof reading with your child every day is one of the best ways youcan help them with their learning. Aside from the educationalbenefits, regular story time can also be ten minutes of respitefrom hectic family life to curl up, read and talk together. Askquestions and discuss tricky vocabulary, but don’t be afraid tolose yourselves in a good story too. Helping your child to enjoyreading is an important goal in itself.

Take turns to read

Whatever age and level of reading fluency your child is at, they’llbenefit from both reading aloud to you and hearing you readaloud to them. Reading to an adult is the most important thingchildren in the early stages of learning to read can do to developtheir word reading. Reading aloud to children is a great wayof building their understanding, showing them what expressivereading sounds like and letting them enjoy a story. By bothreading and listening, your child gets the best of both worlds, learning more than if they only read aloud to you or listened toyou.

Think about the range of books

If children like a book and that’s all they want to read, fine. Itwon’t do them any harm and as they grow older, their tasteswill change, and they’ll move to a different series or type ofbook. But anything we can do to broaden children’s readingpalette is a good thing. You could try ‘book bingo’, where overthe course of the summer children are challenged to read sixdifferent types of book – a novel, a non-fiction book, somepoetry, a picture book, an old favourite and something theywouldn’t normally pick up, for example. Ticking each one offwith a stamp or sticker can be a very satisfying thing to do!

Visit your local library

It’s free and children love choosing their own books to read.Remember if the book your child chooses to read is too trickyfor them to read independently then read it to them or share thereading. Blacktown City Council libraries have free storytellingprograms and reading related activities for children aged 0-12years.

A big WOW goes to one of our wonderful students at Parklea –Aayan. He decided to share his birthday with the animals downat the Blacktown City Holding Facility. Aayan used the moneythat he had been saving, to buy food and towels to donateto the animals at the facility. What a thoughtful and generousgesture to give to others who are in need, especially our fourlegged friends.
