    When in ...

    Lisbon

Perhaps surprising to many, Lisbon is one of the oldestcities in the world, predating such international capitalsas London, Paris and Rome. Phoenicians traded inLisbon, before Romans used the city as a strategic port.Germanic tribes later raided the region, before theywere ousted by Arab Moors. Finally, in 1147, Alfonso Ibesieged the city and once again claimed Lisbon for thePortuguese.

During the Age of Discoveries in the late 15th century,Portugal sent expeditions to the Americas, India andAsia. The seafarers returned with treasures of gold, spices, sugar and textiles, which transformed Lisboninto an international hub for commerce.

This distinctive history of occupation, explorationand trade, fused with centuries-old traditions of thePortuguese people, make Lisbon a city ri ch in cultureand personality. From Manuelian architecture and

stone calada streets, to delicious seafood-basedcuisine and passionate strains of Fado, Lisbon is steepedin old world charm.

Yet, Lisbon is also a vibrant cosmopolitan city. Trendycafes and boutique hotels are abundant. Designershops and art galleries are busy and cultural andpopular events fill the calendar.

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and thewesternmost city in continental Europe. Itsits on the edge of the Atlantic, where theTagus River meets the ocean. Seven hillsrise up from the banks of the river, creatingsteep inclined streets and walkways, but alsoproviding beautiful vantage points from a

multitude of locations. There is no city centre, per se, in Lisbon. Many neighbourhoods (or bairros), eachwith their own unique character, stretch outfrom the Praa do Comercio at the river. TheBaixa, perhaps the oldest part of the city, isthe former business centre. Chiado attractshipsters to its fashionable restaurants andtrendy shops. Bairro Alto offers bohemianchic by day, and a bustling bar scene at night.Quaint Alfama leads up to the Castelo SoJorge, with some of the most spectacularviews of the city. And, Parque das Naoes, former dockyards revitalized for the 1998World Exhibition, offer a modern perspectiveof the city.

Every facet of Lisbon has its own story to tell.Museums detail the rich heritage throughart, fashion, carriages, tiles and Asian arte-facts. Ancient ruins reveal former castles, monasteries, aqueducts and catacombs.

Monuments relive histories of navigators, discoveries and conquests. Each caf andevery street uncovers the soul that permeatesthe city.

    Explore and enjoy Lisbon.
