December Christmas Party
The December Meeting on December 15th will be the annual Christmas Party. Charlie & Brenda
Cutchin will be organizing a “Pot Luck” dinner this year. The Club will provide spiral ham, fried
chicken, drinks and desserts. Members are encouraged to bring a dish. We need to know how many
adults and children plan on attending. Please contact Charlie or Brenda at 483-1643, and let them know
if you are coming and what food item you can provide. Dinner will begin at 5:30.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT Membership dues are due on January 1. Fami-ly memberships are only $30 and single mem-berships are $20. The cost of a family member-ship includes all household members under 18, the PAC monthly newsletter and two fish fry’s each year. Now is a good time to bring in new members. New members may join now for half price thru the remainder of 2014, or join now for 2015 and get the remainder of 2014 free. Renewals and applications can be mailed to the PAC post office box or bring them to the November meeting. Remember, to participate in club tournaments and be eligible for club awards, your dues must be paid before you go fishing. IN CLUB FISHING TOURNAMENTS
The fourth quarter species will be Rockfish,
Bluefish and Tautog and will run from October
1st thru December 31st. See Steve Tyree at the
November meeting to sign up for the tourna-
ment. Please turn in all entries to the Prize Fish
Committee by the 5th of the month following
your catch. Largest percent of citation weight
entry wins choice of club jacket or 100% of en-
try fees collected. The entry fee is only $5.00.
Remember, dues must be paid for 2014 to par-
ticipate in the club tournaments and all fish
rules apply.
Prize Fish
Don’t forget to turn in your catches to the Prize Fish Committee. All adult entries that qualify and
place in the monthly tournaments will be entered into a drawing at the end of the year for one of sev-
eral $25 gift certificates. Gift certificates will be awarded for entries drawn from those that placed in
one thru five, so many gift certificates are up for grabs.
Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout
The 12th annual Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout will be held on December 28th-29th in Virginia
Beach. Over $200,000 in prizes will be awarded.

Yet another blustery cold front kept many anglers inshore for
most of the week, but the Veteran’s Day Holiday weekend
could provide some overdue weather relief.
Despite the elements, anglers still have options in protected
backwater areas, as the fall speckled trout bite continues to
gain momentum. Anglers are hooking lots of keeper trout,
with the best catches occurring in Lynnhaven and Rudee In-
lets, the Poquoson Flats, the Eastern Shore shallows, and the Elizabeth River. Most fish are falling within the
19 to 23-inch range, but many citation-sized fish are also around, with one pushing to nearly10-pounds caught
this week. The Elizabeth River continues to host the largest of the fish, which is usually the case. Anglers are
getting results with most any method, but Mirrolures, twitch baits, and jigs are effective lately. Folks floating
live bait are experiencing improving action in the Elizabeth River Cove area this week. The puppy drum bite
slowed in the Elizabeth River recently, but folks are still finding hit and miss action with keeper-sized fish in
Lynnhaven, Rudee, and Little Creek Inlets. Local surf anglers are also reporting some quality pups coming
from the surflines from Fort Story to the Sandbridge area.
The tautog bite is still going strong in lower Bay waters. When boats can get out, folks are having no trouble
finding willing takers along the entire span of the CBBT, on lower Bay wrecks, and along the Concrete Ships
lately. Fiddler crabs are still the best offering if you can get them, but blue crabs and clams are also working.
Some recent catches pushing to over 9-pounds are coming from near the 3rd island of the CBBT. The bigger
tog are lurking on deeper water wrecks, but the weather is a limiting factor. Sheepshead are also still a possi-
bility in the same vicinities within the Bay, while big triggerfish are lively on many inshore and coastal struc-
tures right now. Nice seabass will respond on many deeper water wrecks, with the Triangle wrecks a popular
location. Big bluefish should also be roaming in the vicinity of the Triangle wrecks and other offshore struc-
tures, but few boats have tried for them due to the recent challenging winds.
Anglers are experiencing an upswing in lower Bay striped bass activity when they can make it out on the wa-
ter. The best developments are occurring with the school-sized fish around all of the lower Bay bridge tunnels,
with many schoolies ranging up to around 23-inches hitting mostly on a moving tide. The old stand-by lures,
including Wind Cheaters, Storm Lures, and buck tails continue to entice strikes in light lines after dark, and
along the spines of the artificial islands of Bay bridges. Local tackle shops are also reporting a nicer class of
rockfish ranging to around 35 to 40-inches coming from the HRBT and the small boat channel of the CBBT,
as well as the 4th island and high rise areas of the CBBT. These bigger fish are primarily falling for live bait
and eels, chunking, and wire lining along the bridges and tubes. Surf casters are also finding some good rock-
fish action from the shorelines near the Lesner Bridge in Lynnhaven recently. Look for the regulations to
tighten up for rockfish after the 1st of the year. Plenty of snapper bluefish are also still around in these same
areas within the Bay.
The Bay flounder scene still has much to be desired. Some flatfish are available along channel edges and near
the Bay Bridge Tunnel structure, but most people are concentrating on other species. The opportunity for de-
cent flounder catches is better on offshore structures, with the Triangle wrecks and the Light Tower areas fa-
vorite picks. Fresh strip baits and Gulp Swimming Mullets are also enticing strikes lately.
Deep dropping is good when boats can get out. Anglers are still finding a good variety of big blueline tilefish,
golden tilefish, and blackbellied rosefish in deeper water. Scattered grouper pushing to around 40-pounds are
also responding in some of these same areas near the Canyon.
Offshore, Virginia waters are mostly an unknown right now, since few boats have ventured out. Yellowfin
tuna, wahoo, and dolphin are still possibilities when folks make the run, but the best action has been to the
south in Carolina, where boats are still scoring with good numbers of fat yellowfin tuna, scattered blackfin and
bigeyes, and some nice wahoo lately. For more information, go to www.drjball.com.

Does Virginia have its own population of speckled trout?
Inquiring anglers and scientists set out in 2014 to learn more about speckled trout in Virginia. With
the help of members of the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program, www.vims.edu/vgftp/ and other
dedicated anglers, Dr. Jan McDowell and Susanna Musick from the Virginia Institute of Marine Sci-
ence collected genetic samples from tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay and waters of Virginia. Addi-
tional samples were contributed from scientists in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
Using a tiny clip of the dorsal fin, scientists Dr. McDowell and Heidi Brightman utilize genetic tech-
niques involving microsatellite markers to compare genetic information among different fish from
these different areas. Researchers hope that this information will tell us more about speckled trout
and whether Virginia’s fish are genetically distinct. Currently, speckled trout are considered a joint
stock with North Carolina, and North Carolina typically harvests more fish that Virginia. Learning
more about the genetic makeup of Virginia’s speckled trout will hopefully help managers learn more
about the best way to manage our fishery.
Preliminary analyses from the project suggest that there may be genetic differences between speckled
trout samples taken from South Carolina and Virginia. Additionally, initial analyses also suggest dif-
ferences among samples from the Elizabeth River, Fort Monroe and the Ware River. These results
are just beginning; more studies are needed to help collect samples in 2015 and determine whether or
not these differences are stable across time and space. VIMS has submitted a proposal for another
year of funding in 2015 to help answer the questions about whether or not the genetic differences in
speckled trout are stable temporally and spatially. To learn more about the project, please contact Dr.

119 teams competed last week in the 57th Annual Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf
Fishing Tournament. There was a total of 2661 fish caught by 119 teams of 6 fishermen over the

Merchandise Report
As you know, I’m taking orders for the Outback Hats. Those are the ones with a brim all the way
around the hat to block the sun on the ears and back of the neck. Only the XL size was available.
The L was on back order. I checked on them during the week of Oct 20th and now both the L and
XL are out of stock. The company can’t give me any timeframe when to expect another shipment.
I’ll keep checking and let you know when they are available. I have orders for 2 Large now so let
me know if you’d like to be added to my list. They are apparently in great demand so I think they
sell out quickly.
Keep in mind the PAC T-shirts and sweat shirts when you’re making up your Christmas list. It’s
closer than you think.

USCG Vessel Examination
Even if you pay careful attention to safety, danger-
ous mechanical problems can crop up on the best-
maintained boat. That’s why the U.S Coast Guard
recommends that all recreational boaters (including
personal watercraft users) take advantage of the free
Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program every year.
VSCs are offered by experienced members of the
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States
Power Squadrons, two of the nation’s premier vol-
unteer boating safety organizations. A VSC is your
best way of learning about problems that might put
you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse,
create danger for you or your passengers on the wa-
ter.

Catchin for Kids Rockfish Tournament
The Catchin' for Kids Rockfish Tournament has been scheduled for December 5th and 6th, 2014.
Plans are underway for activities and setting out the Toy Boxes for the Toy drive. The dates are on
the website at http://www.Catchinforkids.org, posted to Facebook and http://www.tidalfish.com/.

Toys for Tots
It is that time of year again and we need your help. Portsmouth Anglers Club is a sponsor of Catchin’
for Kids who is a large sponsor of Toys for Tots. Many of PAC’s members volunteer for the organi-
zation and activities Catchin’ for Kids holds to help raise money to buy toys they donate to Toy’s for
Tots. The toys we collect and donate are used right here in Hampton Roads. Since many people are
unemployed, donations have dropped so therefore, the need for toys has increased. Please help by
bringing a NEW and UNWRAPPED TOY to our November monthly meeting. If you have any
