Syrian troops fire on protesters
By BASSEM MROUEThe Associated Press
DAMASCUS, Syria — Troops opened fi re on protesters in cities across Syria and pro- and anti-government crowds clashed in the capital’s historic old city as one of the Mideast’s most repressive regimes sought to put down demonstrations that exploded nationwide Friday de-manding reform.
The upheaval sweeping the region defi nitively took root in Syria, as an eight-day uprising centered on a rural southern town dramatically expanded into protests by tens of thousands in multiple cities. The once-un-imaginable scenario posed the biggest challenge in decades to Syria’s iron-fi sted rule.
Protesters wept over the blood-ied bodies of slain comrades and massive crowds chanted anti-government slogans, then fl ed as gunfi re erupted, according to footage posted online. Security forces shot to death more than 15 people in at least six cities
and villages, witnesses said. The regime of President
Bashar Assad, an ally of Iran and supporter of militant groups around the region, had seemed immune from the Middle East’s three-month wave of popular uprising. His security forces quickly snuffed out smaller at-tempts at protests last month.
Syrians also have fearful mem-ories of the brutal crackdown unleashed by his father, Hafez Assad, when Muslim funda-mentalists in the central town of Hama tried an uprising in 1982: Thousands were killed .
The Assads’ leadership – cen-tered on members of their Alawi minority sect, a branch of Shiite Islam in this mainly Sunni nation – have built their rule by mixing draconian repression with in-creasing economic freedom .
Bashar Assad now faces the same dilemma confronted by the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Bahrain – ratchet up violence or offer concessions. A day earlier, his government seemed to test the latter track, offering to consider lifting dra-conian emergency laws and promising increased pay and benefi ts for state workers.
As massive crowds rejected the offers, the worst violence appeared centered on Daraa, where the arrest of young men for spraying anti-regime graffi ti last week set off a cycle of grow-ing demonstrations and increas-ingly violent crackdowns.
The Syrian government said 34 had been slain in Daraa before Friday, while the U.N. human rights offi ce put the fi gure at 37. Activists said it was as high as 100.
The eight-day uprising
suddenly explodes as tens
of thousands demonstrate.
TORONTO Opposition parties oustprime minister, force vote
Canadian opposition parties brought down the Conservative government in a no confi dence vote Friday, triggering an election that polls show the Conservatives will win.
The opposition parties held Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s govern-ment in contempt of Parliament in a 156-145 vote for failing to dis-close the full fi nancial details of his tougher crime legislation, corporate tax cuts and plans to purchase stealth fi ghter jets.
Opinion polls expect Harper’s Con-servative Party to win re-election but not a majority, meaning he likely will continue to govern with a minority in Parliament, dependent on opposition votes to stay afl oat.
The expected election date is May 2 .
SANAA, Yemen Opposing sides hold ralliesin different parts of capital
Yemenis gathered for competing rallies in different parts of the capital Friday as the opposition demanded President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s im-mediate departure and tribesmen marched in his support.
Army defectors fi red weapons into the air to keep the pro-Saleh crowd from reaching Sanaa’s Taghyeer Square, where the protesters were assembling. Loudspeakers broadcast
appeals to the tribesmen to disobey orders to attack the opposition.
Saleh spoke to his supporters, who fi lled another square, telling them he is willing to quit if he fi nds “safe hands” for a transfer of power. Until then, “we will remain steadfast, with all the power that we have,” he said.
The protest movement has gained momentum since March 18, when po-lice and snipers killed 46 protesters in the capital in the worst violence since the unrest began two months ago.
WASHINGTON First late-stage skin cancer drug to extend life gets OK
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a cancer medication from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. that researchers have heralded as the fi rst drug shown to prolong the lives of patients with advanced skin cancer.
The FDA approved the injectable drug, called Yervoy, for late-stage or metastatic melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer, but the FDA has approved only two other drugs for advanced melanoma. Neither drug has been shown to signifi cantly extend patient lives.
Known chemically as ipilimumab, the biotech drug only worked in a small segment of patients studied, and on average they lived just four months longer than patients given older medications. But experts say the drug is an important milestone in treating melanoma, which is often unresponsive to therapy.

NEW ENGLAND
Attacker convicted, sentenced to lifeThe Associated Press
NASHUA, N.H. — A man who admitted he took part in a deadly machete and knife attack on a New Hampshire woman and her daughter was convicted of mur-der Friday after jurors rejected his claim of insanity.
Minutes after the jury re-turned the verdict against 21-year-old Christopher Gribble, Superior Court Judge Gillian Abramson imposed the man-datory sentence of life without parole, telling Gribble, “Infi nity is not enough jail time.”
For the fi rst time in the pro-ceedings, victim Jaimie Cates, now 12, appeared in the court-room. She witnessed the sen-tencing.
Most of Gribble’s knife blows targeted the girl. A lead inves-tigator said that even as she lay on the bedroom fl oor bloodied and feigning death, she opened one eye and watched as Gribble plunged a knife into her moth-er’s throat.
Jaimie entered the courtroom after her father had delivered an emotional victim-impact state-ment in which he said he felt it was his “duty as a husband and a father to be here for every mo-ment of this trial.”
“I’ve lived the accounts of Kim’s murder one excruciating blow after another,” David Cates said. “Through these accounts I have heard my wife’s last breath, heard my daughter’s screams, seen my daughter’s perfect body mutilated.”
Gribble remained as impassive as he was had when the verdicts were returned and when he tes-tifi ed in detail about the attacks.
“I don’t have any illusions this invasion of the sanctity of our home will ever be behind us,”
David Cates said. “Jaimie and I won’t live a day without thinking of the horrifi c things that hap-pened in our home and that Kim will never again be with us.”
In an unusual move, the ju-rors returned to the jury box to witness the sentencing. Some glared at Gribble; others smiled.
Gribble was given the opportu-nity to speak before sentencing but declined.
When he appeared in court for the verdict, Gribble wore slacks and a dress shirt. When he reap-peared in court for his sentenc-ing moments later, he was wear-ing bright orange prison garb and shackled at the wrists.
Abramson thanked Jaimie for her presence in the courtroom
and assured her that the men involved in this “horrible crime” could never hurt her again.
Jaimie left the courtroom through a door to the right of the judge’s bench, dodging media.
Defense attorney Matt Hill de-clined to comment.
The verdict and sentencing punctuated one of the most brutal crimes in recent state history. Steven Spader, of Brook-line, who wielded the machete in the attacks, was convicted and sentenced to life without possi-bility of parole.
New Hampshire State Police Lt. James Geraghty said after the proceedings he was glad investigators were able to take Gribble and Spader into custody the day after the home invasion.
“I think they would have done it again,” Geraghty said. “An-other tragedy was right around the corner.”
Lead prosecutor Jeffery Strel-zin said Gribble’s multiple life sentences were the maximum allowed by law, but “far less than what he deserves.”
“For someone to leave home to provide for their family and learn complete strangers have come in and slaughtered their family is incomprehensible,” Strelzin said of the crimes.
The jury deliberated approxi-mately two hours before fi nding Gribble guilty of two counts of fi rst-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit
murder, conspiracy to commit burglary and witness tamper-ing.
Gribble admitted he took part in the Oct. 4, 2009, home invasion and that he and Spader intended to kill anyone they found in the house.
Gribble took the stand in his own defense during the 11-day trial, claiming he had been abused by his mother and that he had fantasized about tortur-ing and killing her. He asked a jury to fi nd him not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecution experts who examined him tes-tifi ed that he had an anti-social personality but was not insane.
‘Infi nity is not enough
jail time’ for Christopher
Gribble, the judge says as
a young victim watches.

IN MEMORIAMIn Loving Memory Of
LAUREN-RAYE PINKHAM
6/19/1992 to 3/26/1993
I sit in the dark, alone at nightwhat a dark and gloomy sight
My thoughts are with you, way up highShining like a star in the sky.
I wish you were here with me, Lauren-RayeLaughing, joking and having fun.
But you’re gone and so is part of me,I just wished I had the chance to see
you become the girl you should have been.My thoughts are with you way up there,
wondering the colour of your hair.I am down here and you’re up there
It feels like a lifetime before I will get there. To hold you and kiss you and be by your side.
I don't feel there is a place I can hidefrom all the anger and hurt in side.
I love you Lauren-Raye so very, very much.
Love, Mom
