Portégé R500 with Transflective LED Backlit TechnologyThe World’s First Notebook... with Sunglasses!*
It’s summer, the sun is shining, and you would love to take your notebook out for an escapade and use it outdoors,in a nicer environment…
With a conventional notebook, you can do this, but the screen will be difficult to view while out in the open air because of the high ambient brightness and the sunlight reflection, even if with a very high contrast display.
But with the Portégé R500, this is no longer an issue:An innovative technology named Transflective LED Backlit is embedded, which ensures that you can read your screen - even in the sunlight.

When used indoor, the LED display of the Portégé R500 acts like a standard transmissive display. It emits a 215nit brightness, ensuring a high-quality readability.

Once outdoor, simply press the Transfl ective Backlit LED icon on the
keyboard to turn-off the backlit of the display, and obtain
improved readability in a very bright environment.
As the Transfl ective Backlit LED is thinner
and lighter than a standard display, it
greatly contributes to make the Portégé R500 the lightest notebook in the world (779g*). Also, as its power consumption is very low, it ensures longer battery life while you are on the
move.
How it works…
The Transfl ective Backlit LED is composed of a thin mirror. Once
the light coming from the back of the display is turned off, the
mirror sheet can fully refl ect the ambient or sunlight, which then illuminates the LCD panel from the inside. The content on the display then becomes visible.
