Rihane public garden-A place for meeting & activities-First prize winner-Rihane – 2002

Page 21: Portfolio summary Out-8 2014

SUMMARY:

The village of Rihane is situated in South Lebanon at 20 km from Saida and 17 km from Jezzine.

As most of the villages in the south it is still suffering from the Israeli invasion and occupation. In fact it was one of the most important bases of the Israeli army due to its

strategic location on the ridge of the mountain.

After the retreat of the Israeli army, rehabilitation and construction of the villages started but unfortunately a strategic town planning was missing.

Therefore Rihane municipality anticipated the problem by launching a competition for a public garden in collaboration with the Order of the Engineers and Architects of Beirut

In parallel the law of construction was reviewed and applied in the village. The proposed design won the first prize and is implemented by the municipality.

The concept of the proposed project is to enhance the village in three dimensions:

•Esthetically/Architecturally

•Economically

•Socially

The area of the study is equal to 9325m² divided as follows:

•Public garden = 6600 m²

•Hussayniya garden = 800 m²

•Mosque area = 1925 m²

In conclusion the aim of the proposal is to create a garden which is part of the village and vice-versa. Therefore the idea could not be implemented without enhancing the

surrounding of the site. Therefore the study is not limited to the site but it is extended to the Hussayniya garden and Mosque area. Extending the project to the mentioned above

areas will stimulate people to visit the garden that will be acting as a landmark. The role of the extension is to integrate the concept in its surrounding.

However each zone in the garden is influenced by proposed features which are related somehow to the main idea which is the Lebanese village and habitat.

Therefore there was the idea to create the kiosk zone which simulates a small village with its gathering place “SAHA”.

The water features reminds us of the fountains found in Lebanese villages. Rihane is well known for its grotto and fountains.

Native plants such as pine trees, Oak, Cercis, Salix, rosemary, lavender, are proposed to teach people on Lebanese flora and in parallel the sustainability issue is taken into

consideration.

The new public space will act as a landmark for Rihane and the nearby villages. It will contribute in enhancing and reviving the area by encouraging social and economical

activities.

We hope that this project reflects the aim, the role and objectives of constructive public spaces which provide several services to the community.
