“Wherever you go: keep your eyes open. Watch and explore your environment, look how things are built and learn. The best ideas are not created in your head but absorbed and combined from what happens around you.”

Tuula, my teacher at Helsinki University of Technol-ogy, about how to create architecture.

LEENI HARNO

ARCHITECT (M.Sc)URBAN DESIGNER (M.Sc)

Letting myself go, na-ture, being spontanious, the feeling of speaking a new language, raw wood, skandinavian design, taking risks, mountains, topologi-cal architecture, running, structures which can be reassembled, ocean, lakes, intelligent concepts, white, all animals, putting people in renderings, baking cakes, harbors, my family, googling things, super food, riding a horse on a beach, ecologi-cal design, computers, how velvet feels like, the voice of Tom Odell, people who are entrepreneurs, snowboard-ing, photoshopping stuff, not having restrictions, Dr. Martens Boots, smiling peo-ple.

WHAT I LOVE...

understood that I will be wiser tomorrow than I am today, ran a marathon, seen China, noticed that working hard is more im-portant than being tal-ented, met incredibly hard working people, met the king of Sweden, learnt three languages, gone from completely hopeless with computers to completely awesome with computers, won a medall in national level sports, worked on a constuction site, worked as a mascot, worked as a garbage instructor, played Chopin with piano, bro-ken bones, learnt to ask from people wiser than me, made mistakes, pro-grammed a small app.

WHAT I HAVEALREADY DONE...

Travel to Africa, be a project manager, run an ultra mar-athon, get some sort of a prize, renovate my dream apartment completely white, laugh every day, go snowboarding in Japan, learn to speak Norwe-gian, be able to draw any building detail I want, sky dive, arrange extraordinary charity work for old peo-ple, breed dogs, learn to do 360° with a snowboard, cage dive with white sharks, climb at Kilimanjaro, meat Rem Koolhaas, find gold in Lapland, travel on Trans-Siberian Railway, learn 3DMAX, learn programming Python, see Vancouver, take a ferry to Svalbard, see polar bears in nature.

WHAT I WOULD WANT TO DO...

As a part of the Kaunisnur-mi Urban renewal plan I did for the city of Kouvola, I presented a new housing block concept with more detailed plans. This hous-ing block built of wood is inspired by the old Finnish

wood town, the surround-ing landscape and the Kouvola Museum Quarter nearby. The aim was to ac-tivate the life on the street through front yards and terraces as well as apart-ment specific entrances.

The ground floor apart-ments extend through the building body open-ing to both street and in-ner courtyard. However, the block is open in or-der to avoid a too urban atmosphere.

The Berliininpiha housing block Helsinki is a mixture of privately owned dwell-ings and social housing: its apartments are every-thing from small studios to luxury apartments with terraces and saunas.

I worked in a three person team at ARK-house Ark-kitehdit in the construc-tion design, and was re-sponsible for part of the construction drawings of the complex.

Designed after the win-ning of an invitational competition, the Koukku-niemenranta residential complex is a high class liv-ing ensemble which merg-es into the surrounding landscape of woods and

the Baltic sea shore. There are different kind of apart-ments - part of them in duplex houses and a part in the four storey apart-ment buildings. A connec-tion to the nature through spacious terraces was

important to the design. I worked as a part of team in Arkkitehdit Kirsi Korho-nen ja Mika Penttinen in initial design as well as construction design of the project.

“Meijän Tori” is a mixed-use housing block with both townhouse and high-rise dwellings. The design was a part of my output at the Housing Design Stu-dio at Aalto University and was an assignment from Helsingin Asuntotuotan-

KAUNISNURMI URBAN RENEWAL PLAN

KOUVOLA, FINLAND

Kaunisnurmi Urban Re-newal Plan concentrates on developing the sub-urban residential area of Kouvola, which is suffering from problems in func-tionality and obsolescence of its buildings and public

areas. I did the plan as a commission from city of Kouvola in KLIKK Research Project. The plan empha-sized updating the urban structure with infill build-ing and renovation using wood as building material.

In 2010 as a consultant in ARK-house Arkkiteh-dit for the City of Espoo I made the plan which de-fines a color concept for the new housing area in Espoo, Finland. The main emphasis was to create a story for the colors and to enhance the consistency of the built environment.

This concept was used as an outline for architects designing the buildings within the area. The area has 325 hectares in total and a permitted build-ing volume of one mil-lion square meters. The construction started in 2010.

KALASATAMA RESPONSIVE CITIESSTUDIO WORK WITH MIT

“Responsive cities” was a studio project for the new urban district of Kalasata-ma, Helsinki, which used to be a part of Helsinki Port before it moved to east-ern part of the city. This project was in cooperation with Massachusetts Insti-tute of Technology. We

worked in inter-university groups during a workshop in Helsinki and at MIT in spring 2009. The work is a concept that focuses on encouraging to social interaction and offering surprising yet comfortable built environment.

Kirkas Design is our design collaborative focusing on graphic design, visualiza-tion and web design espe-cially in the field of archi-tecture, construction and real estate. After working on several projects as in-

dividual freelancers we wanted to combine our know-how and personal strengths into a multidis-ciplinary team.

We wanted to create a well defined corporate im-

age that represents our outlook on design as well as our roots in the nordic. We wanted a modern yet relaxed look. “Kirkas” is Finnish and means bright, brilliant, translucent and clear.
