“Ouzo of Plomari - Isidoros Arvanitis” distillery is celebrating more than 120 years of history and tradition. The scope of the project covers the partial interior refurbishment of the distillery and the redevelopment of the exterior area to accommodate the needs of guests who want to find out more about the liqueur’s history.

The distillery is in the midst of a magnificent olive grove near the village of Plomari, in Lesvos, the place where Isidoros Arvanitis first produced “Ouzo of Plomari” in 1894, and where it is still produced to this day.

The design combines traditional characteristics of the distillery (copper, wood, burgundy color) with more modern components, in order to preserve the architectural style of the building.

The interior has been completely rearranged to provide the best possible experience for the guests. A shop, a video area, a “tasting experience” area, and finally an exhibition area are all fit in a small open space without sacrificing the room’s functionality. Main emphasis is given to the

floor surrounding the “tasting experience” area, by using vintage patterned tiles.

Every structure and furniture used in this project, has been designed from starch for the specific needs of the project. This is in order to provide a bespoke and unprecedented outcome to the client’s needs.

The development of an exterior “welcome area” outside the building’s main entrance, includes the design and construction of a light tensile structure that will provide shade and comfort to the guests. This also matches perfectly with the modern outer shell of the distillery building.

STONE HOUSE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: INTERIOR DESIGN/ RESIDENTIAL/ RENOVATION LOCATION: PANAGIOUDA, LESVOS ISLAND, GREECEAREA: 175 m²YEAR: 2012,-STATUS: CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

The shipyard of Panagiouda in Lesvos Island, Greece, was once used for the development of pinewood merchant boats. Part of the abandoned shipyard complex, is the stone building of this project, located in a prominent location, a few meters away from the seaside.

The concept idea of the project is to accommodate the needs of a family on vacation; by refurbishing the interior space. The original stone construction consisted of a single open plan ground floor and a mezzanine wooden floor forming the attic. The proposed intervention aims to provide a modern touch while maintaing the traditional characteristics of the structure. Part of the project includes the restoration of the timber roof, windows, doors and shutters, as well as the design and construction of a new kitchen and bathroom.

Le Cotoniere Shopping Centre is a redevelopment of the former Manifatture Cotoniere Meridionali (MCM), an industrial plant in Salerno, Italy.

The project involves renovating the former cotton manufacturing headquarters and, the construction of an extension to the existing building.

The floor proposal is designed in accordance with the old cotton factory design and resembles a crochet tablecloth pattern. Each level design is based on a research of different abstract patterns, scaled at different proportions.

DECOMPOSING VOLUMES- ALIAS HOTEL

Alias is a well-known Italian furniture firm, based in Milano, that requested the redevelopment and refurbishment of Moretti’s building in “via Corso Italia”, Milano, to house a concept hotel based on Alias furniture.

The design tries to intrigue the curiosity of the guests to explore the interior and the beautifully crafted Alias furniture, by creating an inside volume in the existing interior space, with soft geometric walls and different levels.

The project focuses on a part of the ground floor, the courtyard area and a bedroom that is located on the first floor.

The courtyard is developed by abstract wooden forms which create a beautiful contrast with the materials of the road. This area, can be used as a place to sit, as a place that you can put an Alias chair and create a small outside exhibition, or alternatively it can be used as a sculpture that invites people to the interior of the hotel.

On the ground floor, there is the lobby area and a theme restaurant. The plan is open space, with different levels that give the opportunity to the visitor to walk through it and explore every corner. The lobby is composed by pieces, by walls that have abstract shapes. These walls also accommodate the design philosophy, as their material and design matches the ones used for the furniture places next to them. As an example, the wall next to where the “la leggera chair ” is placed, is made of wood with a part of it missing, to assist the guest in focusing at the transformation of the first unfinished material (wood) to the product (la leggera chair). The same concept is adhered to the TT sofa but this time the material is aluminum.

The philosophy of creating a decomposing volume inside the existing volume is also implemented in the design of the bedroom area. The main materials used here, are concrete and wood.

CENTRE OF GEOTOURISM

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PUBLIC/ HOSPITALITY LOCATION: SIGRI, LESVOS ISLAND, GREECEYEAR: 2007-2008SUPERVISOR: DIMITRIS GIANNISIS

This thesis project focuses on Sigri, a region in Lesvos Island famous for one of the most important natural heritage monuments in the world, the Petrified Forest.

Sigri, attracts the attention of hundreds of tourists each year, who are solely interested in exploring the geological heritage of the area. A natural evolution of the above is the growth of an alterna-tive type of tourism known as geotourism, which in turn created a demand for organized services specifically targeting these tourists.

This underlies the necessity for this thesis project, which provides a comprehensive conceptual design of a Geotourism Centre in Sigri.

There are three main points governing the design:

1. The necessity for a natural integration of the development with the surrounding landscape, which is dominated by bas-relief characteristics (i.e. volcanic features, rocky ground combined with low vegetation);

2. The vicinity of the development to an area of exceptional geological importance known as the “Geopark of Sigri”;

3. The necessity of incorporating hands-on geological activities, such as educational workshops, inside or in the vicinity of the development, aiming to provide an enhance experience for the tourists.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF A "PARASITIC" BUILDING

PROJECT: PUBLICLOCATION: PATRAS, GREECEYEAR: 2007-2008SUPERVISOR: DIMITRIS GIANNISIS

The project research was focused on the meaning of “weaving cultural places in architecture”, that in a multidimensional way, is the “parasitic” fill of cultural activities (places) in the gaps of the urban web. Cities which by definition represent social models invite and unify functions where everything can happen by connecting places and spaces.The area that was given for research was the un-built space of “Trion Nauarxon” in Patras, where the Department of Architecture is “parasitically” developed.

A dynamic architectural form is created to follow the “weaving” of space, giving value to the urban gap and reducing the difference between buildings, and consequently, the difference between interior and exterior. The building module smoothen its borders, the public space loses the coherence and clarity of its borders enriching and leaving the public character of cultural activities between the private natural obstacles.
