Visitor centre artist’s retreat

Project: Design projectType: Visitor centreLocation: Heijplaat (Rotterdam harbour)

Right in the centre of the international harbour of Rotterdam still lies a secluded group of buildings which were built to quarantine sick sailors. This unique green island among huge industrial sites is home to several artists. In the future the aim is to house a retreat for artists. A new multifunctional building will provide the retreat with a visitor centre, exhibition space and workspaces of all sorts. All buildings are built in Amsterdam School Style and are all partly hidden among trees. The plantlife in combination with the clear geometrical shapes of the architecture provides for a quiet place in the middle of one of the busiest harbours in Europe.

The new public building of the retreat is both the entrance building with reception as well as the border between the public and private space. A brick wall starts at the driveway of the complex and increases in height as it nears the building. One gap in the wall gives access to the private buildings which will be transformed to groups of appartments.

Gerrit Rietveld Academy

Project: Design projectType: Art school expansionLocation: Amsterdam

The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam is famous for its education in arts and crafts. However, new media have become more and more important and new techniques are constantly invented and improved. The school is in need of bigger and more diverse spaces in order to accomodate all the different disciplines and the increasing number of student. The extension of the building is designed in the spirit of the old school but will be bettter accessible as it will function as a workshop and exhibition space at the same time.

The workshop in the new building is placed in the basement. Students and staff of the school will see students working on all different kinds of projects. The goal is to inspire both students and teachers. By creating a basement students can take advantage of the increased height and gain additional daylight at the same time.

The new building will have a connection to the old building at basement level as well. In this outside space students have the opportunity to exhibit bigger projects. On the other side of this space a section of the old building will host the new library. The base-ment is new en will contain rooms to work on photo’s and films.

Students graduate from the academy by hosting a public exhibition of all graduation works made over the last semester. All disciplines are represented. In stead of exhibiting in distant buildings devided over the city the complex will offer different spaces for dis-playing graduation works at the Academy site. When not used as display pedistals the newly placed concrete elements function as furniture and as signs for directions. There will be no additional ‘traditional’ signs.

New media require new ways to present work. Screens placed in front of the facade function as sunscreen during the day and as projection screen in the evening hours (the Academy is open till midnight on weekdays).

Water tower Heuveloord

Project: MSc graduation projectType: RestaurantLocation: Utrecht

Early water towers are very noticable remnants of the industrialisation efforts in the Netherlands. The expanding cities in the Netherlands needed a water system to provide the people with enough clean wa-ter. Engineers were able to build steel structures but concrete was not yet invented. The combination of a steel reservoir on brickwork is fairly rare as it was only used during the early development of the water tower. The reservoir has a content of a 1000 cubic metres. 1 View from the north

Spaces in a cilinder

Rond spaces have no orientation and are hard to divide without losing the overall idea of the circel, or in this case: the cilinder.

The floors and walls are placed in such a way that they remain visually con-nected. The difference in ceiling heights and place-ment of the stairs guide you through the building.

Modular docks

Project: Design projectType: Street furnitureLocation: Utrecht

This dock was created for an old industrial zone along a canal. A new route along the water gives access to the waterside of large industrial buildings which normally block any contact with the canal. The wooden repetative parts create a comfortable walkway over the canal while white steel elements refer to the industrial characteristics of the concrete, steel and brick buildings. All parts are modular and the shapes elements can be built on an industrial scale.

Case over gas pipe

Project: Small design projectType: Part of internshipLocation: Leiden

This neo-renaissace style former university building was transformed to three depots for three museums in Leiden. In one of the entrances the main valve of the gas pipe disfigures the old building. The new case is placed over the valve and contains an extraction pipe for leaking gas and a fire panel. The shape is based on storage crates which are used in the depots.

Project: Study caseType: Private assignmentLocation: Eindhoven

Churches loose more and more members each day. There may be a time when a church is too big for it’s parish. Instead of maintaining multiple churches the aim was to combine three different religious com-munities together in one multifunctional building which could function as small scale community centre for the neighborhood. One extra church hall gives enough flexibility to hold services. A bigger kitchen was planned to be able to cook for a big number of people.

One storage room was combined with the old toilets to create restrooms which are up to standard. Big-ger toilets were primarily needed to accomodate the increasing number of elderly people in the church.

Multifunctional rooms with their own toilet and pantry can be rented out to small neigborhood projects.

Photography

Project: PhotographyType: Black & whiteLocation: Utrecht/Delft (former faculty of architecture)

Photos taken from the right angle provide perfect material to project your own work on. First by sketches and later on you can create an impression of the project with it. With Photoshop you can create different atmospheres with just one photograph.

31

Page 35: Portfolio Jorrit Hoevenagel

32

Photography is an essential part of presenting your work. Pictures can be taken from the overall project in order to show the atmosphere. Pictures of details are equally important to show the integration of concept and technology. In case of black and white pictures (above) you can for instance increase the contrast to put emphasis on the geometrical shapes of a building.

Page 36: Portfolio Jorrit Hoevenagel

Sketches are the initial descriptions of a plan and are the main communication method between colleagues or clients. The black lines on the white paper show all that needs to be shown. Every line has a purpose and that which is not necessary to show is not drawn. Colour in a sketch is the next step when you want to let the picture show more information, for instance about materialization.
