WHAT IS A GEM?
When a gem is cut, it is referred to
as a fashioned gem. Skillful
fashioning can show off a gem’s
luster or color.
Hardness is one of the factors of durability.
The Mohs Scale ranks minerals in order
of their hardness on a scale of 1 to 10.
Because diamond scratches every other
mineral, it ranks a 10.
Just how hard is diamond?
It’s 124,000 times harder
than talc at 1.
Your fingernail ranks 2.5 –
it can scratch gypsum and talc.
To form, a gem requires a unique combination of chemical elements and geologic conditions.
Most rock and mineral crystals are formed from the
8 most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust: oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron,
calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. But
a gem like emerald, the most valuable variety
of beryl, requires the element of chromium
to get its color, which is only present in
100 parts per million
in the Earth’s crust.

WHAT IS GEMOLOGY? A branch of mineralogy, gemology is the study of gems that includes identifying and evaluating gemstones. Experts in gemology are called gemologists.

Inclusions can cause phenomenal effects
A mineral is a natural, inorganic material with a special
chemical composition and crystal structure
that repeats itself.
Of the more than 3,000 minerals discovered so far,
only about 100 qualify as gems.
Made up of masses of mineral crystals, some rocks
are composed of crystals of a single mineral, but most contain
more than one kind.
They come from a living or once-living thing.

• Irradiation – exposing a gem to radiation to improve its color.
• Filling – filling a gem’s fractures with a colorless substance, including oils, resins, and glass to improve its appearance and durability.
• Dyeing – adding or modifying color, to deepen it, change it, or make it more even. Commonly dyed gems include cultured pearls, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, and coral.
• Heat Treatment – exposing a gem to rising temperatures to lighten, darken, deepen, or completely change a gem’s color. Heat can also create or eliminate phenomena and inclusions.

FASHIONING GEMSMost rough gems are crystals and their shapes depend on their chemical structure. Aquamarines and emeralds come in hexagonal (six-sided) shapes –the crystal structure of beryl.
INCLUSIONSBy-products of natural crystal growth, inclusions are characteristics enclosed within a gemstone, or reaching the gem’s surface from the interior. Inclusions often hold the key to the gem’s identity, and help to distinguish a naturally occurring gem from one grown in a laboratory.
TYPES OF INCLUSIONS • A distinct mineral crystal • A cloud of minute particles
• A hollow cavity filled with liquid, gas, and sometimes a solid crystal
• Color zoning (caused by variations in coloring impurities)
• Fractures (caused by stress to the crystal)
Cobbing removes heavily included sections from rough by careful tapping with a small hammer.
Sawing divides gem rough into easily handled pieces and removes waste.
Grinding gives a gemstone an appropriate shape, or produces flat planes for facets.
Polishing gives the gemstone the smoothest possible surface.

Gems are mined directly from the original rock they formed in, using drilling, blasting, picks and shovels. Colombian emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, and tanzanite are mined from primary deposits.
Gems erode from the rock they formed in and accumulate in river gravel. Thousands of tons of rocks may be eroded to yield only a few ounces of gem material. Only the toughest gems survive to become part of secondary deposits.
Eluvial = gems erode from the source rock but remain in place close to the source.
When continental plates collide, or ocean crust descends under the
continental edge, mountains are built. Large bodies of rock melt, granite forms, and
heat and pressure transform existing minerals into new ones. Many important
gems – including ruby, sapphire, and garnet – can form at this time.
Molten rock from the mantle taps deep layers in the crust and brings existing gems to the surface. Large bodies of granite or other igneous rock provide heat for metamorphism and inject pegmatites into fractures in the rock.

SECONDARY DEPOSITS
Alluvial = eroded gems are transported from their source by fast-moving rivers and streams.
Later, the same granite releases hydrothermal fluids that mix with cooler water from the surface to form new mineral veins. Topaz and some emerald deposits might form under these conditions.
As fast as mountain ranges rise, frost shatters the high peaks and exposes gem-bearing rocks. High rainfall carries the debris away, and concentrates the hard, chemically stable gems in the river and stream gravel.
This dynamic process takes place over many millions of years to continually recycle and restructure the Earth’s crust.

Gemologists can identify natural gems and separate them from those made in a laboratory. Using tools like microscopes and other instruments, they analyze gems to learn about their characteristics and origins, and determine their quality. Gemologists work in a variety of settings where gems are found: mines, jewelry stores, research laboratories, museums, and some educational institutions.
