captivating residen
ce the sportscraper
captivating: to influence and dominate by some special charm, art, or trait and with an irresistible
appeal.
first year SOHO design expressing the definition of captivating through means of architecture. visual and spacial cues serve as verbs in the syntax of architecture. the visual diagonals first draw views in from afar and allow the spaces to suggest movement inwards with tapered volumes and voids. interior spaces also visibly capture movement into spaces with intriguing and playful day
lighting.
the sportscraper, a sports facility skyscraper, is a senior level design experimenting with horizontal thinking expressed in vertical means. by taking a typically horizontal program like sports facilities and flipping it on its side, an urban friendly and dynamic
building is erected.
the overall form of the sportscraper attempts to signify the transition between current skyscrapers and where skyscrapers will soon be. the rigid vertical half of the sportscraper stands perpendicular and blends with typical building type surrounding Houston life while the undulating and expressive curtain wall other half
symbolizes a movement of change soon to come.
the sportscraper houses a yoga garden, spa, Olympic size pool and dive arena, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, a general arena, a boxing and martial arts floor, ground level skate-in skate park, an atrium rock climb wall, an indoor skydive facility, underground parking to free up the lot to the public, and much more.

holy trinity catholic church
the Holy Trinity Catholic Church is a design that explores the relationship between traditional Catholic ideas and modern representation. traditional ideas are often expressed in redesigned form and unconventional notions take a turn with typical.
Holy Trinity is located in Bexar County and provides the two story sanctuary space seen above ground, and mixed-use rooms, activity and recreational spaces, and
offices located in the below ground courtyard.

the majority of the church is raised 3 feet above ground to give illusion to a floating and light building and is held up by the Holy Trinity, represented by the three-part exterior columns. the wedge shape draws from the traditional cathedral building type idea of ascension into the heavens but redefines the
form into a modern interpretation of the spiritual path.
entrances to the church are a formal front entrance symbolic of a winding path that one must climb and an informal second entrance accessed by entering below the church into the below ground courtyard and rising up into the foyer
through the central courtyard.
the main cruciform frosted window provides a soft light to the sanctuary space and characterizes the traditional crucifix with a contemporary form. it continues to wrap the entire building by becoming a roof element, splits off into the tri-part stained glass windows, creates the central courtyard, and flips back under into a structural glass aisle that gives the illusion of walking on air.
an interior nave view showing two story sanctuary space, altar, main glass axis, three part exterior columns, and the traditional stained glass transitioning from
roof element and wrapping down into sanctuary.
a wooden exterior and interior give this modern form a touch of traditional and the structure literally grows out from the ground and ascends into the sky.
overhead view showing site and the main axis glass element with the three part stained glass windows branching off.
(far right) interior formal foyer entrance view. far left leads down into office spaces and classrooms, left leads to main sanctuary space, center is main courtyard that accesses below ground courtyard., and right leads to second
level seating in sanctuary

firehouse #23 gilmore residence
firehouse #23 is a sophomore level design for the College Station Fire Department to house a firemen crew and a municipal court.
due to a separation in formal municipal needs and informal fireman residential space needs, the building has been broken into two separate pieces and seeks to highlight the unique relationship of interdependence between the two functions through form.
the municipal space (on the left) is derived from a standard two-story rectangular volume, but has been shifted and anted into something more distinctive to reflect the unique characteristics of the program. the two pieces also play with coordinating positive space and void. in elevation, it is clear that there are two separate entities,
but alludes to the spaces being easily pushed together to become one.

this residence, a sophomore year design, was conceived for the fictional mother-daughter relationship of Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. the quirky relationship between this duo gives life to this beach residence and is accommodated by many
peculiarities in design and the whimsical nature of the house.
because both ladies come from a traditional family, it was important to recognize precedence. traditional becomes the starting point of the design, and quirks derived from the characters morph the spaces into something to cater to them both. a standard foyer with grand staircase has been translated into a tapered distinctive space, a unique modern twist on curtain wall colors a typical two-story living room space, a secret staircase from Lorelai and Rorys adjoining rooms gives immediate access to their home theatre, and a completely separate guest room to house the
infamous Emily Gilmore makes this custom home complete.

the Baker residence, a third year project, is a sustainable low-impact lake house residence in the hills of Lake Travis Austin. the Bakers, a husband who works as an investment banker and yoga teaching wife, wanted a serene and simple home that they could escape to, a space that would reflect their interests, and a project that would be minimally invasive to their beloved hill country. the baker residence design allows for natural ventilation, harvests solar energy with roof mounted photovoltaic panels, incorporates a loft for a minimalistic setting, allows for a studio for Mr. Baker to carry out his business, and is designed with a structural pier system that minimizes the footprint of the residency. the design also comes from the Bakers dissimilar personalities. The home draws little attention and curiosity from street side (bottom left), and once navigated inside, quickly opposes the quaint with dynamic
and allows the rest of the estate to reveal itself.
