Computer Skill SetProficient with: Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Window and Mac Operating Systems, Web Design, and Presentation GraphicsExposure to: SPSSSummary of experienceAs the Clinical Sport Psychologist intern at the University of Rhode Island Counseling Center, I had the fortunate opportunity to understand and learn the skill sets needed to be able to help athletes performances in sports. (work ON!)

Being a student-athlete at the University of Rhode Island, one would think I would understand the role a sport psychologist plays in the field of athletics. However, I did not know about the beneficial services he/she could provide, and in fact was not even aware that the University had a sport psychologist on staff. After learning this information, I was curious to see how many other student-athletes, like myself, were unknowing about these services. To my surprise, mostly everyone I spoke with, had the same response, A Sport Psychologist on our campus? Seriously? Based on these reactions, I was excited to educate the student body about the benefits one can seek by seeing a sport psychologist. One of my objectives for my internship was therefore to promote my supervisor and the services he had to offer. I wanted to reach as many student-athletes as possible, and therefore felt the best way to do so was by creating an informational pamphlet to be put in the athletic offices. I achieved this objective by reviewing literature on the roles of sport psychologists and how they can help improve athletic sports performance. After learning that a sport psychologist work.. I was able to take the information I accquired and use my creativity to turn it into an eye -catching informational pamphlet.

A second objective of mine, was to create a research study. Based on instruction from my supervisor and scholarly articles I read, I I obtained understanding on the importance of recovery training. I learned that many coaches, players, etc. see the only way to improve performance is through work, work, work, however real growth in performance occurs during recovery rather than during the working process. Learning this, I was curious to create my own research on the knowledge student-athletes have about recovery and its application in their training processes. I achieved this objective by administering recovery questionaires to both men and womens soccer teams at the university. The questionaires were used to assess the amount of recovery training being applied within the teams, as well as to reviel their understandings about recovery. STATE WHAT I LEARNED?

Understanding the amount of impact a sport psychologist has in helping athletes reach their optimal levels of performance, has removed any uncertainty I once had about becoming a psychologist specializing in sports. I started majoring in psychology because I wanted to help peolple and after working with my supervisor it has been made clear to me that this is the job for me. Through my internship I was able to learn the ins and outs of the field, but most importantly what it takes to be successful in working with people. My intermship has prepared me for graduate school, and has excited me towards finding a career in the field of sport psychology.Learning Contract

Internship Job Title: Clinical Sports Psychology Intern

Background:As a requirement to graduate with an undergraduate degree in psychology, one must complete a course in Experiential Practica and Internships, and thus I was on a quest to do a full internship in a particular area of interest of mine. I played for the University of Rhode Island Womens Soccer team for four years and have been very involved in sports throughout my life, thus I wanted to do my internship centered on athletics. Since I am majoring in psychology, I also wanted my internship to involve working at a place, which could give me further insight into my future career goals. Therefore, it was only appropriate for me to try and intern with the sports psychologist on campus, Dr. John Sullivan. Being on a sports team at the University, I had the advantage of working with an athletic advisor (Winkle Kelley) who introduced me to Dr. Sullivan and from there, we were able to work out an internship opportunity.
