Nature CenterHornsby Bend is a common site for bird watchers due to its wide range of habitats, from river to lake, and from meadow to thick woodlands. The nature center sits in a depres-sion in the landscape. Wrapping around this fertile swamp area, it establishes a sequence of external views while enclosing a central courtyard. The structure incor-porates two key elements: water catchment and screened enclosures to hide bird watchers.

Bird Blind

Design II, Spring, 2011Professor: David Heymann

Duration: 6 weeks

Situated in the Hornsby Bend Nature Preserve, the birdblind permits bird watching across multiple habitats. It descends from a wooded levy into a marshland, then extends out into the lake. As the habitat transitions, the bird blind must accommodate a corresponding shift from locating a nearby chirp to scoping out a duck on the distant water.

The section and model investigate the structural system in relation to the fa-cade. The bowstring truss holds up the glazing while the outside column supports the entire building through a space truss.

Environmental Controls - Fall 2012Professor: Keith Simon

Duration: 2 weeks

The luminaire project is designed to accent a variety of outdoor settings. It’s vertical orientation ensures that maximum light is spread horizontally without contributing to light pollu-tion. Wrapped in a transparent ma-terial, the amount of glare in a dark outdoor scene is minimized.

Food Park

Design III - Fall, 2011Professor: John Blood

Duration: 3 weeks

The food-truck venture is a growing industry in Austin. This urban park scheme aims to foster that growth by transforming a parking lot into a food-truck park. To order an unfamiliar setting, a platform that marks different zones is stretched across the park. The bustle of finding one’s favorite truck is separated from sitting down to eat in the shade. A performance stage is also provided, “folded down” from the back wall to provide backdrop views to downtown Austin.

Redevelopment: Airport Blvd

Design IV - Spring, 2012Professor: Allison Gaskins

Duration: 16 weeks

Airport Boulevard is a transit corri-dor shaped by the rise of the automo-bile industry. The goal of the project was to redevelop detached neighbor-hoods to achieve a greater level of density. Hemmed in by the barriers highway and boulevard, the street-ways were designed to slow down traffic and appeal to the pedestrian. This kind of appeal would open up the isolated neighborhoods to create a mixed-use urban setting.

Proxy 13

Design V - Fall, 2012Professor: Michael Beaman

Duration: 10 weeks

The Proxy Series began in 2007 as a set of process-based projects fo-cused on the exploration of emerg-ing technologies as both the material and methodological basis of design. Proxies are constructions that exam-ine the nature of architectural design, production, and theory as a manifesta-tion of programming, processes, pro-cedures, manufacturing and assembly. Each project investigates a discrete set of architectural issues spanning all five of these categories. No. 13 is funded, designed, manufactured and assembled by beta-field, a design and research office, and Architecture stu-dents from the University of Texas, School of Architecture. Designed to modulate space, the surface is composed of over one thousand paramet-ric units. The texture varies in granularity and apparent “spikiness”. This shifting haptic qual-ity, along with sight lines through the tubes, affects movement differently around the installation.

Design Build: Agua Dulce

Construction II - Spring 2012Professor: Cisco Gomes

Duration: 14 weeks

Agua Dulce is an urban hydropon-ics farm in Austin. The project was to work with the owners to design and build a visitor path with shaded seat-ing, an educational shed, and a sym-bolic chapel for the farm. The shade structure arches over the path, fram-ing the distant entrance to the shed. The shade structure also angles out sideways to the Green Chapel and the rest of the farm.
