FrockPile ClothingFall 2014

Frockpile is the name of an online vintage clothing boutique my girlfriend and I run in our free time. This project is the result of a semester long endeavour to create an updated look for the company that encom-passes both print and digital mediums.

Through the duration of this project I found myself fulfi lling many different roles. My hands are intricately intertwined into every aspect of this proj-ect including, but not limited to; art direction, pho-tography, print design, web design, and occasionally modeling, despite my best wishes.

I took advantage of the time given to me with this project and experimented with different techniques I had never attempted before. I spent an especially gratifying afternoon throwing around colored mica powders and photographing them to use as textural elements in both the website and lookbook. This, several days of shooting, hundreds of miles traveled between several cities, as well as the hours and hours spent researching, shopping, planning, and execut-ing, resulted in one of my most in-depth design proj-ects to date.

Projects like this one are especially close to me because it required I partake in some of my favorite aspects of the design process, brainstorming, prob-lem solving, collaboration, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

Scioto Soil & WaterConservation District

Fall 2014

When Scioto County’s Soil and Water Conservation District contacted Shawnee State with interest in con-tracting a student to create an updated logo for the agency, I was elated to be offered the job. This is how I met Kate Sowards, Scioto SWCD’s Education Coordinator. I quickly came to realize this was going to be much more than a sterile business deal. Kate was passionate about their agency and the region they served. She enlightened me about the free ser-vices they offer to farmers and landowners around the area, and how they pride themselves as an educational resource to the public.

Her enthusiasm was infectious and I approached the project with the same vigor. I wanted to create a mark that represented the professional services they offer to a diverse community, as well as one that seemed as approachable and welcoming as Kate and her team were to me. Scioto SWCD was interested in a logo that located them in the country while dis-tinguishing from the other conservation districts in Ohio. I believe I was fortunate enough to fi nd a via-ble solution that contained all of our ideas.

A well designed website is the ultimate cooperation between function and form. To reach that level I took it upon myself to choose a supererogatory approach with this project. I spent an entire day traveling around the city of Portsmouth taking photos. This eventually lead to some pretty cool experiences, including being welcomed to explore a rooftop by the owner of one of the tallest buildings in town, and meeting a world renowned muralist who had a passion for sharing the counties rich history.

I believe I found a certain amount of success in this project directly from taking the time to step out and photograph the city. That day of exploration allowed me to see my hometown through different eyes and when I was fi nished I felt inspired and fevered to get to work. The results speak for themselves, SCVB’s new web presence highlights the region with elegant photography and a modern, fl at design.

Featured ArtistRobert Da�ordMay 14, 1951 - PresentInternationally acclaimed muralist

“I would come up each June with my wife and kids for years and years. I’d spend the days painting and in the evenings we’d stay in this house here beside the river.”

Robert Da�ord is an internationally acclaimed mural artist. He has painted more than 400 murals in the United States and Europe.

His work is featured along the entirety of the mighty Ohio River. Having worked in Steubenville in the late 1980’s, a group from Ports-mouth saw his work on Vancouver Island. They liked his murals in Steubenville, so asked him to come up from New Orleans in 1992. From 1993 to 2003, over the course of ten summers, he worked on the �oodwall murals until their completion. In 2004, he started doing addition work on the walls and eventually on the outside of the gates. Every year since its completion, he comes up to �x and �ll the cracks of the older walls for restoration of the paintings.

He has a book coming out from the university of Louisiana Lafayette press. A 225 page book composed of around a few hundred murals out of the over 400 plus he has produced over his lifetime. Most of his contemporary work is shown, a lot of the historical pictures from Steu-benville to Paddocks, as well as the 1000-mile stretch of historical murals across eight cities. His book comes out November 1st at the Louisiana book fair and is available on Amazon and at Books-a-Million.

Mâché WeatherSpring 2014

With the ample diversity of software available on both the Apple and the Google Play stores, a weather application is practically a blank slate for a designer. I wanted to take full advantage of this opportunity so it didn’t take much time for me to decide to pursue a design that blends the line between digital and tactile worlds. I gathered all of the various paper and cloth samples that I could fi nd around the house, and used a fl atbed scanner to import the textures into Photoshop. All of the icons were custom developed for this appli-cation in Illustrator, the shapes were then also brought into Photoshop where the textures were applied. I also chose to use Photoshop for the layout of the applica-tion simply as an exercise in the software.

The Mâché weather app for Android and IOS was intended to present the user with all of the information they need in a delightful new way. Even with the play-ful paper aesthetics of this project, I didn’t want to lose sight of how the app would be used. Every element of the application is accessible from the home screen. This is made possible by a “fl oating card” design that allows the user to swipe either left, right, or either of the two bars at the bottom of the screen to access more information. All this while enjoying the intuitive ani-mations that refl ect the realistic theme.

Developing the icons for various types of weather was my favorite part of this project. As I worked the style reminded me of the Little Big Planet game series. I imagine these icons would wobble in place much the same way elements of that game did.

Trek BikesSpring 2014

The updated design for Trek Bikes’ product cata-logue marks a major shift in how I began to approach design. Rather than simply fulfi lling requirements that were presented to me I began to question how far I could push the project. I wanted to elevate my design not for a grade or attention from my peers. Rather, I sought out fulfi llment in my work and began to design for the sake of design.

The project required we design 5-10 spreads cata-loging Trek’s products and organizing a large amount of technical specifi cations that accompany them. I chose to go beyond that and design a package of three catalogs, nearly 80 pages of inside spreads, and organized 27 bikes worth of detailed specifi cations. This gave a better indication of how the rest of the catalogue would be designed, but also allowed me to solve some issues that may not have arisen had I stopped at the required length. The catalogues uti-lize Trek’s existing branding guidelines that they use on their website, but in a way that is appealing and appropriate for print design.

The SilhouetteFall 2014

The Silhouette is Shawnee State University’s cre-ative writing and arts magazine. The publication fea-tures works of poetry, prose, digital, and traditional art submitted by students, faculty members, and the surrounding community. The submissions are sorted through by our editors and staff to select what is to be featured in the magazine. I was presented the job by a good friend and peer of mine, Jessica Martin. She began to push the magazine graphically further than it had ever gone before, and I wanted to continue that tradition. I believe I accomplished that by exper-imenting with shapes, typography, layout, blending modes, as well as paper choices.

I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to work on such a large scale project with little to no creative restriction. I’m responsible for all of the layout design and art editing for this issue of The Silhouette, and I am excited to begin work on the edition for spring of 2015 very soon.

Majestic MembersFall 2014

The Majestic Members are a group of artists out of Athens, Ohio who are known nationally for their exceptional and diverse range of work. They are not, despite their name, partial to jokes of the phallus.

When the Members were planning to have a show in Shawnee State’s Appleton Gallery, I had just recently taken the role of graphic designer for exhibi-tion materials and advertising. They, in turn, were my fi rst gig with the gallery and I had no intention of not rocking the boat just a little (it certainly didn’t help that I had just recently fi nished Sagmeister’s Made You Look). When I was presented with the work-ing exhibition names of “Expansion” and “A Variety Pack”, I felt it was beyond my control not to take advantage of the situation.

For this project I went to my nearest grocery and bought a few of every fruit and vegetable of the par-ticular nature, along with a couple other inconspicu-ous items — honey, sprinkles, etc. These, paired with some fi reworks I happened to have left over from last independence day, resulted in a project that was ultimately turned down by the group for being “too provocative”, and my absolute favorite design exper-iment to date. However, I do think it’s important to mention I took their refusal in stride and happily offered a second design they found more appropriate, as un-sagmeister as that may have been.

The explosion featured on the expansion poster was not created in Photoshop. Although I was unsure how the bottle rocket was going to react to being lodged in a cucumber, I took my chances and held down the camera shutter. Luckily I got the shot in just one take.

Stock Car RacingFall 2014

Stock car racing, (commonly known today as NASCAR racing) is a colorful sport with an especially colorful past. I tried to capture the rich history of the sport in every element of the poster, right down to the illus-trations which I created with organic, varying line widths to give a rustic and hand-drawn appearance.

I developed this design in a way that emulates the appearance of a woodblock print. I wanted it to appear that the entire poster could have been carved into a material, painted, and then pressed against the warm ivory paper. Each historical fact was metic-ulously placed and then distorted to fi t around the illustrations in a way that makes this a piece meant to be admired, not just read straight through. This allows the viewer to be able to enjoy the poster over and over, each time noticing something new.

Although by this time I had already grown accustomed to creating sets of vector illustrations, this was my first time using this organic line style. I’m really pleased with the way it turned out.

Fall 2014

Working for the Appleton Gallery in Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts proved to be one of the best decisions I made during my college career. Not only did I gain real world expe-rience creating original advertising for the shows, I also got to meet incredible artists and gain valu-able insight into presenting your art in a professional environment. The skills I gained working with the gallery have already proven benefi cial to me in more instances than one, and I value the opportunity to work with accomplished creatives and soak in some of their experience.

Stump StandardsFall 2014

I thought I’d wrap this up by presenting a project that was slightly unconventional compared to my previ-ous work. I fi rst met Wayne Stump during my time working as a designer for Graf Brother’s Flooring. Wayne was also a designer, likewise we shared an interest in woodworking and sculpture, so naturally we hit it off. When he called me out of the blue a few years later to ask me to host the opening exhibition in his new gallery I jumped at the opportunity.

In order to create a large enough body of work to fi ll the gallery in less than a month I enlisted the help of one of my classmates, and good friend, Matt Daniel. His strong work ethic paired well with mine and his style contrasted nicely, so he was a shoe-in. We both took advantage of the chance to show our work in this fashion and decided to base the show on an allegory of the stress associated with being a young designer in the present time. Ultimately, I learned a lot about presenting your work and talk-ing about it in a public fashion, and had quite a bit of fun while doing it.
