For my first two years in HBA, I mainly workon the interior design tender drawing package. Since the Jiangyin and Beijing Sheraton project, I became more involved in design development. I handled the presentation drawings and the whole set of tender drawings by overseeing the international draftsmen team.

We wanted to create a modernized Japanese dining space but with a touch of traditional Japanese style. The design concept was developed and transformed based on the key elements from the Zen garden.

Bombay Sapphire exhibition was a crossover project between art, design and business. Bom-bay sapphire were going to display 5 glasses which won a design completion they had held. At the same time, they invited 5 artists/designers to create an art installation at the same venue –theHongKongFringeclub.Wewereaskedtodressupthevenueanddefinethespaceforthe 5 glasses and the 5 art installations.

The theme of the exhibition was “Deep Blue”. We used mirrors in blue color as a major element within the space to create the feeling of illusion & imagination.

We were asked to design an accommodation space for one student in the courtyard of the Chelsea College on Millbank, but my project ful-fillsmuchmore:I wanted the courtyard be a public space beyond the private accommodation building and be part of the Chelsea College, not just a building on its own. It is almost like a neighborhood, a place where students can come and stay during the day. At night, the client could enjoy the entire space for himself. The building will connect the ground level of the road and lower ground level of the existing Chelsea College building. The en-tranceofthespaceisdefinedbydifferentlevelsof the design which are subtle but irresistible. An existing Henry Moore sculpture will be relocated at the corner where it is easily seen from many angles even from the Tate Britain oppisite the road. The roof top of the new building will also connect with the college’s banqueting hall’s cor-ridor and guests can access it for a view or some fresh air.

This is an extension project for one of the famous cinema in Hong Kong. The new spaital arrange-ment of the ground level is almost like a pre-function area which encourage people to com-municate and interact before and after watching movies. This place also aims to let people experi-ence motion pictures from different perspectives - visuals, sound, information, scripts, music, etc.

Thiswasaprojecttodesignanofficeforatextilemerchandising company which is located in the centre of the city with a good harbour view. My idea was to share the good view and the sunlight with all the staff, that is why the corridor, pan-try and meeting areas are located next to the window side. This arrangement not only able to let more light enter to the space but also can en-hance the working atmosphere. Some spacing is also saved due to the one side corridor layout.

Art & Cultural project - Black Box Exercise“Images of Asia” @ 2003

Black Box Exercise started in 1995, as an art education program launched by Zuni Icosahedron which provides a platform for people from different backgrounds to express their thoughts within a black colored box of 30 X 30cm. One of the boxes was mine which exhibited in the “Images of Asia” festival, 2003 in Copenhagen.

It was a post-SARS period. I wanted to deliver the message that Hong Kong is recovered from the disease to Copenhagen. My black box then became a container of “Hong Kong air”. “Hong Kong air” was like a souvenir which was a pack of air with a photograph inside, which were both captured in Hong Kong.

In August and September 2003, “Black Box Exercise” was invited to the opening ceremony of “Images of Asia”, the Inter-national Arts and Culture Festival of Co-penhagen, organized by the Danish Centre for Culture and Development. The theme of this exhibition was “SARS in Asia”, and there were 70 black boxes on display, coming from Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok and Taipei.

This International Arts and Culture Festival opened in August in Copenhagen and was Europe’s second largest arts and culture festival that year. Her Royal Highness Prin-cess Alexandra officially inaugurated theGrand Opening of the Images of Asia Fes-tival 2003 by opening a Black Box exhibit created and presented in person by one of the Hong Kong delegates, Mr. Sam Lo. The purpose of the Festival was to enable the people in both Europe and Asia to have a better understanding of the contemporary arts and culture in Asia, as well as to pave the way for future collaboration among the various European and Asian cities. The Festival was held in eight different cities in Denmark, and the Festival covered pro-grammes of art education, performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and conferences. “Black Box Exercise” was one of the ma-jor events in the area of art education, and there were 2,500 students and artists from eight cities of Denmark, and 2,000 from more than 10 Asian cities participating in the workshops and exhibitions.
