Austin, Texas Asoma Instruments Inc. announces successful measurement of copper (as copper cyanide) and potassium (as potassium cyanide) in copper and silver plating baths that contain EPA- identified hazardous materials using a single bench-top Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) ana- lyzer. A silver measurement was also successfully made on the silver plating bath. Asoma’s batch analysis created no extra waste that would require storing or discharging per EPA effluent guidelines. Since the sample was nei- ther changed nor destroyed, it could be returned to the plating bath. Asoma EDXRF analyzers are also designed to operate at-line right alongside the plat- ing process, which eliminates the need to ship batch samples to an off-site lab. To save time and labor costs, Asoma batch and in-stream analyzers can analyze for up to six elements at a time, in a variety of matrices, and can easily be operated even by nontechnical per- sonnel. A new pressure-type air-blast ma- chine, which employs a dual-nozzle arrangement that provides repeatable finishing results on concave parts while conserving compressed air and eliminating the need for masking, is now available from Empire Abrasive Equipment Co. The machine combines two or four nozzles, manipulated by a ball-screw drive, with six rotating work stations on an indexing turntable con- veyor to provide desired blast angle and coverage. Because the machine uses pressure nozzles rather than suc- tion-blast guns, which would require more guns and compressed air to perform similar finishing jobs, operat- ing costs are reduced. A programmable controller precisely governs nozzle stroke length and count. Another fea- ture is an automatic media-replenish- ing device that ensures 100% refills each time the machine’s pressure ves- sel cycles by replacing broken-down media, extracted through the reclaimer, with an equal amount of fresh material in the storage hopper. The machine is also equipped with a tunable media reclaimer and vibratory grit classifier, both of which contribute to a more consistent media mix and repeatable finishing results.
