North Hempstead Town SupervisorJudi Bosworth, the Town Board, vari-ous elected officials and communitygroups joined to officially open thenewly-expanded Hempstead HarborShoreline Trail. The trail which beginsat North Hempstead Beach Park andruns south adjacent to West ShoreRoad, was previously one quarter-mile long from May Newburger Coveto the first overlook, but has nowbeen expanded by one mile, makingit 1.25 miles long.

This is the culmination of nearly adecade of applying for grant fundingand acquiring land to make the trail’sexpansion a reality. Construction onthe project began in January 2014and was completed by GalvinBrothers, with the engineering doneby GEI Consultants.

“It is so thrilling to have our veryown nature trail right here in NorthHempstead where residents canwalk, jog or hike,” said SupervisorBosworth, who has made revitaliza-tion of the waterfront one of her toppriorities. “This trail expansion is awonderful start to what I hope will bea continuing effort to develop ourwaterfront thoughtfully. I look forwardto continuing to work with all levels ofgovernment and our environmental-ly-minded community groups as westrive to make Hempstead Harborone of the most exciting waterfrontdestinations on Long Island.”

The meandering path is lined withbenches, native plants and a bridge.

Sections of the trail are handicappedaccessible. The Hempstead HarborProtection Committee (HHPC) provid-ed signs about nature and wildlifethat are placed at overlook points.

Eric Swenson, Executive Directorof the HHPC said, “Shoreline trailsprovide an excellent and easy way forthe public to access and enjoy theirwaterfronts. Hempstead Harbor isfortunate not only to have a good por-tion of its shores publically-owned,but to have several waterfront trails.”

Carol DiPaolo, Programs Directorof the Coalition to Save HempsteadHarbor, said “The completion of thetrail following the wetlands restora-tion on the harbor’s western shoremarks another outstanding improve-ment for Hempstead Harbor. The trailprovides a great educational oppor-tunity by affording community resi-dents access to the water’s edge sothey can observe the shore birds andmarine life that depend on the harborfor their habitat.”

The cost of the trail was complet-ed with the aid of a $100,000 grantfrom the 2004 Nassau County BondAct and a $271,000 grant from NYState Parks. “I am pleased that theCounty has been able to secure fund-ing to assist with this project,”Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whittonsaid. “There are few places morebeautiful to walk along thanHempstead Harbor’s shoreline. An Evening at the Library with Author, Colm Tóibín

"A high-wire act of an eighth novel. Tóibín's radical restraint elevates what mighthave been a familiar tale of grief and survival into a realm of heightened inquiry. Theresult is a luminous, elliptical novel in which everyday life manages, in moments, toapproach the mystical." – Jennifer Egan, The New York Times Book Review

"Miraculous... a strikingly restrained novel about a woman awakening from grief anddiscovering her own space, her own will. Extraordinary... [Tóibín] portrays Nora withtremendous sympathy and understanding." – Ron Charles, The Washington Post

From ThePublisherThis was the response whenan anthropology instructorasked a student to put into hisown words a rather longwind-ed description of how leadersget to be known, or notknown. I was reminded of this when

we received a copy of a lettersent to a publication aboutwhat the author viewed as agross lack of coverage at anevent. In other words they didnot get the coverage they feltwas their due. For everyone who wants edi-torial coverage and those who

feel their favorite vendor, club, organization, etc. shouldget coverage, let me provide acouple of hints on getting itdone. Most publications have afraction of the editorial staffprevalent just a few yearsago… Reporters and editors

arestretchedabout asthin as pos-sible andare oftenreduced tosimply tak-ing in copyand rerunning it. This isn’t thebest scenario, but it is accu-rate… and it provides a greatopportunity for those desiringeditorial coverage. Simply, make certain youknow what the focus cover-age of your target publication. Then provide your article inan electronic file, preferablywith a Hi-res photo, illustra-tion or logo (picking a photooff the web doesn’t work). Aneditor working on a deadlinewill love it and you have amuch better chance of cover-age. Try to avoid sending aflyer, window poster, orinside newsletter article. These all require time andeffort and diminish yourchances of accurate coverage. You should also write yourarticle in the third person so itdoesn’t look like a puff piece(quotes in quotes can make ita bit more personal). As we put this issue of thePort Washington Calendartogether, we are surprised atthe lack of articles receivedfrom HarborFest Participants.Dozens of booths being takenby both commercial and notfor profits, and we have verylittle to tell attendees aboutyour booth, your offerings, orthe value of stopping by yourbooth. Finally, if you find all of thisdifficult and/or complicated, just refer back to the headlineof this column.

He who doesn’t toot his own horn, doesn’t get it tooted…
