Introduction
Since it's foundation, the organisation has played a vital role in the development of the city of Waterford and the south east Ireland region.
The company is focused on delivering the needs of new and existing customers.
The port’s main facility is at Belview, some 5 miles downstream of Waterford City, and 12 miles from open sea.
The City Quays facility is available for secure open storage of cargo and berthing of vessels.
Port of Waterford is the only port in Ireland with planning permission secured for further extensions to the Belview site.
In addition, the Port Company has an extensive land bank available for development. Adjacent to the port IDA Ireland has developed a business park. Port of Waterford would be delighted to hear from interested parties who may require land. Further details are contained within this document.

Why Ireland and Waterford?
Wind Energy
Wind energy is currently the largest contributing resource of renewable energy in Ireland and has huge potential for future requirements.
By 2050, Irish wind could contribute 2.5% to EU Electricity Demand and just over 5% of EU wind energy generation could come from Ireland [Ref: SEAI Wind Energy Roadmap].
Ireland has the potential to generate enough electricity to exceed domestic demand by 2030. There are approximately a dozen wind farms in the South-East of Ireland are in contract stage and another dozen in pre-planning stage. As a result, this shows the importance of Waterford as a gateway to servicing these sites.
The map below shows both existing and potential windfarms in Ireland. We believe Waterford is capable of serving domestic developments and service and support of offshore developments.

Ocean Energy
In addition, ocean energy is Ireland’s greatest energy resource. Given our location on the fringes of Europe, we can take advantage of the huge potential of the ocean. Our ocean territory extends to an area ten times our land area, and includes seas with some of the strongest wave energy.
Through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, there is a dedicated government body providing supports, policy frameworks, research, funding and infrastructure projects to develop Ireland’s potential for delivering energy to the domestic market and beyond.
Ireland is set to be a net exporter of electricity by 2016, facilitated by the new 500MW East-West Interconnector.

Ireland has world leading ocean energy companies, as well as those with marine engineering and research capabilities. It has a solid reputation for R&D and clean technology services and products.

Waterford’s Institute of Technology, is a highly respected third-level education institution, with specific programmes geared to Sustainable Energy Engineering.
The Port of Waterford has over 1 kilometre of quays – with depths alongside of 8m to 10m CD.
The Belview facility is compact and uncongested and has handled renewable energy project cargo in the recent past.
Port of Waterford has handled the unloading of wind turbine and renewable energy equipment. It is well positioned to service tidal and wind resource developments in the south and east coasts of Ireland, and potential to service UK wind farms.

All these factors make Waterford an ideal base for renewable energy projects in Ireland and nearby energy markets.

Location
Port of Waterford’s location is its strength. It is located in the southeast of Ireland, close to continental Europe. This location makes ideal as a stepping stone for land and water based projects.
European Wind Energy Association’s 20 year offshore network development plan shows that Waterford is well positioned to service energy infrastructure projects in the Irish Sea, Bristol Channel and beyond.

In addition, the Port company has available 24 hectares for immediate use. This land is zoned “port-related”, with easy access and a short distance from the quays.

Special cargo can be discharged using one of two gantry cranes. There is potential to store such cargo under the gantry cranes, or load direct on to transport, in the same move, minimising damage potential.
Stevedoring with this gantry crane is performed by Waterford Container Terminal Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Port of Waterford. It’s dedicated staff are customer focused, very experienced and extremely flexible.

Approach Waterford is a natural harbour with an entrance 3 miles wide.
