is the largestand most recent addition tothe Greenpeace fleet.
The ship was originally builtas Echo Fighter, a fire-fightingvessel for the Russian Navy inthe 1980's along with thirteenother ships.
One of the requirements forthe ship was that it had to becapable of travelling throughice, therefore she is an iceclass vessel which enables herto travel to polar regions.
After being sold a couple oftimes she was launched asMV Esperanza (Spanish for“hope”) in 2002 and is thefirst Greenpeace ship to benamed by visitors to theGreenpeace website.
Before the ship was able toenter the Greenpeace fleet,she had to undergo a longrefit in order to prepare her
for her new role as anexpedition ship.
Her propulsion was changedto a more efficient dieselelectric system and onboardasbestos was also dealt with inaddition to a wealth of othermodifications.
Greenpeace added ahelicopter deck as well as newboat cranes enabling her tolaunch the six rigid hullinflatable boats she carries.
With berths for 33 people anda maximum speed of 16knots, she travels to a varietyof places around the worldtaking part in variousGreenpeace campaigns.
Esperanza made her ShipSimulator debut with therelease of Ship SimulatorExtremes along with the newRainbow Warrior 3.

Port of RotterdamThe Port of Rotterdam isthe largest port in Europeand in 2009 became the tenthlargest container port in theworld due to the amount oftwenty foot equivalentcontainers it handled.
The port itself is vast,covering a total area of10,570 hectares of which6,855 hectares is land. In thatspace the port can handle ahuge variety of cargoes, fromcruise ships and theirpassengers to containervessels carrying computers.
The port is home to six oilrefineries along with anothersix refinery terminals and 11tank terminals for oilproducts. It is also home to47 chemical plants, four biofuel plants and 5 vegetable oilrefineries.
Each year the port sees anenormous amount of shipscalling with some 34,000seagoing vessels entering theport and an extra 133,000inland vessels as well. Theport also gives employmentto 86,000 people.
Rotterdam is able tocope with handlingsome of the largestvessels in the world,including the recentlyretired Berge Stahl whichwas only able to call at afew ports, Rotterdambeing one of them. Thetotal length of the portarea is 40 kilometresand the maximumdepth is 23 metres.
Each year 100 million tonnesof crude oil goes through theport and 10 million twentyfoot equivalent containers;enough to circle the globe!The port also handles270,000 cars which go on toEurope from America, Japanand Korea.
Maasvlakte 2
In 2008 work began on alarge new development to theport named ‘Maasvlakte 2’ toensure that Rotterdamremains at the forefront ofworld trade for years into thefuture.
By 2013 the first containerships will be able to mooralongside the 2000 acre docksand transfer their cargo tothe new facilities which willbe directly linked to thecurrent port.
The Port of RotterdamAuthority has made sure thatthe wildlife and areas of sanddunes destroyed in thedevelopment of the new portarea are compensated withother areas dedicated to theenvironment. Theseprocedures include thedevelopment of a new seabedprotection area and thecreation of a new dune beachthat can also be used forrecreation.
