Speaking of burgees, here is a picture of Piotr Wareham in Antarctica with the PLYC burgee hanging in the Southern Hemisphere. I am pretty sure he is the only one in our club who has exchanged this far south, and also has exchanged burgees in Alaska. Congratulations on your sailing expedition.

Vice Commodore’s Column by Billie Land

Thanks to Polly Peters our April Wreck Room Coordinator, we have enjoyed a variety of Wreck Room meals. Polly did a great job with quality meal experiences. Please find her and let her know how much we appreciate all of her and her helpers’ efforts for making April a great success at the Wreck Room.

The Wreck Room Coordinator for May will be Kat Boggs. She has some wonderful things planned. I’m looking forward to it.

If you can help Kat in any way, please let her know.

Piotr Okonski has just returned from a sailing expedition to Antarctica. He was one of nine crew members on a 70-foot sailboat from Ushuaia, Argentina to the Antarctic Circle and back. This trip required him to cross Cape Horn twice. He took our Port Ludlow burgee with him and hung it up in the National Antarctica Scientific Center Akademik Vernadsky Station, the southernmost bar in the world! We are one of only two burgees hanging that far south in Antarctica thanks to Piotr.

Rear Commodore’s Column by John Morris

Welcome to May. Club activities are picking up. Training Day was a success. I can't say enough about the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We want to give special thanks to Diane Neesz who made a trip to Silverdale the morning of Training Day to insure we had an adequate supply of sandwiches. We also want to thank my lovely wife Lois for coming up with the innovative ideas for the Silent Action and a raffle approach where the raffle ticket buyer got to choose what items their tickets were used for and not win an item they may never use.

The programs and presenters were incredible. Ratings from critique sheets showed that information presented averaged 4.6 out of 5, and presenter’s knowledge averaged 4.7. The overall program was rated 4.8.

We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our sponsors listed here:

I hope that as club members we will give them first consideration should we require any of their products or services.

As the season begins, the PLYC calendar has so many exciting events to look forward to. At the time of writing, the meeting for the Wake-up Cruise has just taken place with a record number of boats scheduled to attend. Opening Day on May 12 is always a fun celebration. Many more cruises are also on the calendar. The Broughton Rendezvous (June 30 through July 4) has ten boats registered now. I have communicated with Echo Bay and Sullivan Bay and determined that space is still available. There are two flotillas scheduled for May 29/30 and June 17. We are looking forward to seeing as many of our club members there and at all our scheduled cruises and events.

Highlights from the April 4 Board Meeting by Gary Hicks

The Board approved Carol Cole to fill the vacant Social Director position for the rest of the 2018 term.

Final numbers at the end of the first quarter 2018 after completing the Dues Renewal process are 119 active memberships, 122 total memberships, and 226 individual members.

In response to a question at the March Business Meeting, PLYC policy is as follows:

“Exchange burgees” (small ones) will be provided without charge upon request by members for trading with other clubs who don’t yet have a burgee hanging in the Wreck Room. “Boat burgees” (large ones) will not be

provided for trading purposes.

The Treasurer reported Club assets of $300,784.40.

Changes to the keying of the Wreck Room are underway. A project to improve the Wreck Room bar area is being investigated,

The revised Wreck Room operation that started in January using caterers for some meals and changes to the coordinator volunteers appears to be working although more extensive training efforts have been needed. Someone is needed to perform the Wreck Room Volunteer Scheduler function for the second half of 2018.

Preparations for Training Day, and Opening Day continue.

Work by the Emergency Planning committee continues.

The Nomination of Officers process for 2019 is starting.

Committee work to modernize the Club's website technology has started. The Board approved the Discovery Meeting Summary Document regarding planned website changes from the 3/13/18 committee meeting.

By the time the May Jib Sheet is published, we’ll have returned from the first PLYC Cruise of 2018. The four-day trip is scheduled as I write this—we leave tomorrow—down the Hood Canal to our destination of Alderbrook Resort, with an overnight stop each way en route at Pleasant Harbor. This is a trip Katherine and I have done for the past several years, and it is always a pleasure to get out once again on our boat as a new cruising season commences. This trip—the “Wake-Up Cruise”—is an event that gives us a chance to test out our boat systems, practice navigating and maneuvering our crafts, and renew the many friendships we’ve gained from the Club’s cruises over the past seasons. Katherine and I excitedly look forward to this cruise each season, although it’s difficult to tell if our

cat Molly shares our enthusiasm. And I think it is worth noting that this trip this time around has been enormously popular, with all available places fully subscribed by the 18 boats set to depart on Sunday morning.

Opening Day for the 2018 boating season for the PLYC will be 12 May, with the Opening Day flag ceremony at 1000, followed by the new boat christening ceremony and the boat parade around Port Ludlow Bay, passing in review by Commodore McQuarrie. The parade is followed by lunch in the Wreck Room for members and their guests. There is a sign-up sheet for the Opening Day Parade now in the Wreck Room, adjacent to the Room’s sign-in clipboard. By all means, do join us for this tradition demarking the opening of the 2018 boating season!

The season’s cruises are now partially scheduled, as would be noted several places elsewhere in this edition of the Jib Sheet. We still lack Cruise Directors for the June and September cruises, and once again I’ll ask all cruisers to consider providing the necessary leadership for these two events. As always, I’m available to consult with about these possibilities. I hope we gain volunteers for these prime-time trips.

So here’s to the 2018 boating season, and we look forward to seeing you out there on the water!

Sail Captain by Kathy Gager

Port Ludlow is a popular sailing destination - as is demonstrated by the many visitors to our marina each season.  The Sailor’s Group has decided to take advantage of our beautiful location and have the June cruise right in Port Ludlow.  Deanne and Olav Pedersen are organizing this cruise.  June 22nd through the 24th, you may see us doing maneuvers to set our anchors/raft-up, use our dinghies, and hangout together. For me personally, the biggest challenge will either be: A) learning to set our anchor for the first time (and cleaning the mud out of it afterwards), or B) camping out on our 32-foot boat versus sneaking home for a long soak in the hot tub.  That isone thing we definitely do not carry onboard.  Actually, because the Sailor’sGroup is such a fun set of folks with amazing culinary skills, staying aboard

will be easy.   Those of you with a desire to join the fun, can sign-up by contacting me at: [email protected]. Or, if you just want to visit us on the bay, just bob on over.  It is a short trip.

Prior to the cruise, the Sailor’s Group will have their first potluck organizational meeting on June 14th from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Wreck Room.   If you are interested in knowing more about the group or in participating in the program, please join us.   Please contact me at: [email protected] to sign up for the potluck.

Since the Website Discovery Meeting last month, Dan Land and I have been working on testing the technology integrations for the new website and

developing the website site map. Dan has used his extensive integration skills to successfully develop a working prototype of the various functions that we need.

At our next meeting of the Website Development Committee, we will discuss the testing progress, website sitemap recommendations, and new options that our technology explorations have provided. Then, the final wireframe decisions for website pages can be made.

The new website is scheduled to launch in September this year. Please watch for this article every month in the Jib Sheet to find the latest information on the new website.

PLYC Website Development Committee members are: Neal McQuarrie, Billie Land, Anne Burrell-Smith, Gary Hicks, John Simpson, Doug Svik, Rand Lien, Daniel Land, and Peggy Kulm.
