Exciting FutureProphesied forPowder Metals

Taking an imaginativelook at the future of pow-der metallurgy in the nextdecade, Inco president Al-bert P. Gagnebin predictsthat it will gain steadily inpopularity because it iseconomically efficient,technologically sound, andecologically neutral.

One aspect of powder metal-lurgy technology, for example, isthe direct production of a greatvariety of finished articles of puremetal or alloys without melting,such as the pure nickel sheetsfrom which coinage is punchedout. Another important advan-tage is the precision it permits inthe creation of highly specializedalloys. Further powder metal-lurgy developments will probablylead to the discovery and produc-tion of alloys with as yet unheard-of properties.

Metals such as nickel, whenrefined in the form of powderrather than in bulk such assheared cathodes, not only bypassthe possibility of picking up im-purities during remelting for usein foundries of rolling mills, butare also much easier to controlto the very close tolerances re-quired in creating the highlyspecialized alloys that are insteadily growing demand. Fur-ther developments will probablylead to the discovery and produc-tion of alloys with as yet unheard-of properties.

"In the Seventies," Mr. Gagne-bin said, "powder metallurgy willprove invaluable to those indus-tries on the frontiers of engineer-ing. They will need alloys withproperties that only p o w d e rmetallurgy will be able to pro-vide."

Addressing the 1970 Interna-tional Powder Metallurgy Con-ference at New York. he notedthat the powder metals industryhas been growing at the rate of15 to 20 per cent a year (luringthe past decade, and that rate

is expected to continue well intothe next decade. "All of us in-terested in expanding the marketsfor powders are working withincreased fervor, be we makersor end users of nickel, iron,aluminum, copper, graphite orany other."

Inco Powder Production"As part of a $1.1 billion ex-

pansion program in Canada,"Mr. Gagnebin continued, "we arenow constructing a large modernnickel carbonyl pellet and powderrefinery in Copper Cliff. Thisrefinery, due to go on-stream in1972, will have a planned annualpowder capacity of 25 millionpounds of nickel powder. This,coupled with an expansion nowunder way at our Clydach (Wales)refinery, will mean a five-fold in-crease in our powder-producingcapability since 1968. 1 thinkyou will agree this is a fair tes-timonial to our faith in thegrowth potential of your indus-try."

International Nickel, Mr. Gag-nebin added, is not only commit-ting a plant to this future, butpeople as well. "Twenty metal-lurgists are now working on pow-ders, in contrast with only one 12years ago."

"The applications of powders,"Inco's president said, "are limitedonly by the imagination. Wehave seen powders used success-fully in animal feed, fungicides,magnets, filters, bushings, bat-teries, tire studs, coinage, cuttingtools, welding electrodes, powdermetallurgy parts for the automo-tive, aircraft and consumer indus-tries, greases, and on and on.

Hundreds of new applications arewaiting to be found. And theywill be found through the re-search and engineering gound-work in which we are all nowengaged."

Significant ContributionMr. Gagnebin then traced for

his -. audience where some ofInco's work with nickel powdershad led. One of the early useswas in sintered steels made bystandard American practice. Theresult was 2, 4 and 7 per centnickel steels that offered signifi-cant contributions to the powdermetallurgy industry.

"More than 30 per cent of ournickel powder sales are beingdirected toward nickel-cadmiumbatteries. You have all seen theapplication of this type of powersource in consumer items rangingfrom cordless electric tooth-brushes and carving knives toflashlights. In the last severalyears, we have seen this powerconcept extended to battery-operated toys, hedge trimmersand lawn mowers. In the indus-trial field, we see it being used inincreasing quantities for standbylight facilities, fire alarms, andstart-up power for aircraft andhelicopters. This is a world-widemarket and one that offers tre-mendous future growth, thanksto the dependability of theproduct."

Exciting Alloys ProspectAnother powder concept cited

by Mr. Gagnebin is one whichhe said provokes excitement inanticipation of things to come.This is the conversion of powders

to high-purity alloys in wroughtproduct form.

"At the Burnaugh, Kentucky,facility of our Huntington AlloyProducts Division, for example,we have developed techniques bywhich we use either pure nickelpowder or a blend of severalelemental p ow d e r s and thenthrough pressurization within theconfines of a converted 16-inchnaval gun tube, we create a bil-let form which, after sintering,yields a product suitable for con-version to the conventionalwrought forms of strip, rod orsheet. Billets as large as 4,000pounds have been produced inthis way, and purities controlledwithin a fraction of a tenth of aper cent have been achieved."

Custom Blending of PowdersMr. Gagnebin also discussed

roll compaction and isostaticpressing of powders, saying,"Now let's project these conceptsinto the future. What is so far-fetched about a steel mill or brassmill producing an alloy chemistryinto any desired product formdirectly from powders? The bitsand pieces of this technology arealready here: isostatic pressing,roll compaction and forging pre-forms. Powders are now beingcustom-blended to meet the strin-gent requirements of today'smany sophisticated applications.How close we are already, then,to the day when a customer cancall and dictate chemistry, andthen a mill, through powdermetallurgy, can blend, compact,or shape; sinter and finally de-liver forgings, sheet, strip, tubing,wire - you name it to the

DRAGAN SESTO and his wifePatricia celebrated his recent retire-ment on Inco pension by taking atrip back to their native Jugoslavia,where they were married in 1927.Dating back to 1942, Dragan'sentire service with the Companyhas been in the electrolytic depart-ment at Port Colborne. MARCEL AMYOT and his wife Bridget are raising twofamilies at their McCrea Heights home, as well as theirthree brighteyed children, they also have a family ofeight beautiful Siamese cats. Five-year-old Giry is seenhere between his parents, backed up by sisters Sandra,10, and Karen, 9. Marcel joined the Company in 1951at Frood Mine, transferred to Stobie and later toLevack, but has returned to his "native" Frood, wherehe is a trackman on 2400 level. He enjoys ridingWestern saddle with the Rocky Mountain Valley Riders.

RENATO PEDRON built his own home in New Sudburyand his favorite pastime is making renovations andimprovements there. He and his wife Anna Mariaboth come from Italy; their two children are l4month-old Gary, and Enzo, 13. Rencto started with theCompany in 1952 at Levack, transferred in 1958 toFrood-Stobie, and in 1962 to Clarabelle open pits,where he is a bulldozer operator. He came fromTreviso, Italy, to Canada in 1950; his wife Anna Maria,also Italian by birth, came from Castelfranco.

LAVERNE PITZEL works with vibrationsboth on and off the job. At work heis a vibrations inspector for the preven-tive maintenance depcrtment at CopperCliff. At play, he coaxes harmoniousvibrations from his accordion to enter-tain various senior citizens' groups inSudbury. Born at Humboldt, Saskatche-wan, he started working for Inco atCopper Cliff in 1948. His wife, Eleanar,is from Rutherglen. Their children areKathy, 12, Dorothy, 11, Shown, 15, andJoe, 10. On July 23, Shawn added tohis laurels as a long-distance swimmerby swimming 22 miles at Rock Lake,bettering his 1969 mark of 18 miles.

brifliant success for Inco's annualinter plant golf tournament onAugust 8 fizzled out midwaythrough the afternoon draw astorrential rains swept the Sudburyldyhvylde course and sent 144drenched players sloshing dejec-tedly back to the clubhouse.

it was the first time in 33 yearsthat the Inco tourney lost a de-cision to the weatherman. Themorning draw of 144 playersfinished their 18 holes in beautiful,unshine.

T he storm struck suddenly andsavagely. A tremendous bolt oflightning shattered a tree not 20feet from the clubhouse. MackBell of Copper Refinery, walkinga short distance from the pointof impact, was spun around anda'most knocked down by the forceof the electrical discharge.

Made Speedy RecoveryHowever, safely under cover,

the dry players got wet and thewet players got wetter as goodcheer took over and good fellow-ship reigned supreme. A bounti-ful buffet dinner was followed bypresentation of trophies and prizes,and then many of the playerswere joined by their ladies to windup the day's program with anenjoyable dance.

Port Colborne NewsIn the big parade that was part of Port Colborne's 100th bIrthdaycelebrations, the International Nickel refinery float drew a lot of attentIonwith its gay decorations and its symbolIc display of the plant's operatIons.Included in the well designed layout were miniature pachuca tanks, filterpresses, an anode furnace, an electrolytIc plating tank, and modelsdepicting other features of the pure nIckel production process. DrIverof the chariot pulling the float was Ron Daniel of the yard crew.

of the tournament everythingcame up roses for the Port Col-borne nickel refinery entry, evenwithout the finesse of its veteranstar, Merle Noyes. The Port teamof Bill Spence, Merle's son Bob,and two newcomers to the fray,Ken Burke and Brian Friedlein,kept the situation well under con-trol. When the Copper Cliff'sBill Buchanan, for example, single-putted the first five greens, Spencethreatened to throw his ball in thelake, and that was the end of thatsizzling threat.

Again packed to the capacity ofthe course, the event moved witha minimum of holdups despitemany a lost bail and bush-boundwanderer, and the mines depart-ment committee took bows fromall sides on the way it handled thearrangements. When the stormdrowned out the last half of theafternoon draw, they calmly dis-played the wisdom of Solomon indeciding the division of the spoils.

In Copper Cliff's Youth ClubAlready pronounced a big

success is the summer recreationalprogram for the youth of CopperCliff, organized by the CopperCliff Youth Club.

Committee president is Rev.Bob Munro, vice-president HaroldHeale, and treasurer Lorne Gar-ber. Along with the executive,the community-minded committeehas representation from all thetown's four churches. Financialsupport is provided by the Townof Copper Cliff, Copper CliffLegion, the Italian Club and thechurches.

A wise move by the youth clubcommittee was to hire profession-al help. Miss Sandra Houston,a graduate of Confederation Col-lege of Applied Arts and Tech-nology with a diploma in recrea-tional leadership, was engaged asthe summer recreational director.

The recreational facilities ofthe public school, high school,community hall and Nickel Parkare the stage for a highly diver-sified schedule popular with ages4 to 14. Total registration runsaround 200.

Pre-School TrainingIn the playground division, for

children ages 4 to 5, PatsyO'Neill's able direction is aidedby leaders Cynthia McDonaghand Debbie Bronicheski. Basi-cally intended as a pre-schoolwarm-up, the program includesgroup games, singing and musiclistening, cut-out fun, and enact-ing parts in simple plays. Theyreceive basic water safety instruc-tions at the wading pool. At-tendance varies widely, but anaverage of 60 children show upevery day.

Day Camp Averages 80The day camp division, de-

signed for children aged 6 to 11,is attended by an average of 80youngsters per day. CounsellorsCathy Brown, Brenda Longfel-low, Debbie Rondina, MonicaWhitmer, Terry Denomme andswimming instructress Karen Tre-zise aid the day camp director,Nancy Garber. Counsellors forthe boys' activities are RandyPawson, Rick O'Neill and ChrisCorrigan.

This division's activities arelargely sports.-oriented, particular-ly for the boys who get to playfootball, basketball, baseball, soc-cer and lacrosse. The girls par-ticipate in arts and crafts, groupsinging and creative drama, aswell as various organized sports.Special events like fireball visits,beach parties, hikes and birthdayparties are also on the agendafor this group.

Plan Overnight TripA teen division has also been

set up for boys and girls, aged 12to 14. This part of the programis supervised by Sandra Houston.

"Coffee House" PopularA "coffee house" drop-in cen-

tre at the community hall bustleswith activity every Thursdaynight. There is always a big rushon the ping pong tables. Theteen division, which includes adozen girls who also enjoy or-ganized activities, finds the drop-in centre a great place to shootthe breeze between games ofcheckers, cards, and the whole-sale consumption of soft drinks.

The townspeople's overall reac-tion to the summer program hasbeen one of unqualified approval.The dedication of the organizers,coupled with the skilled guidancebeing given by the directors andcounsellors, has resulted in anenthusiastic response from theyoungsters.

Our MistakeA rather obvious error in our

last issue reported Thompson'sattaining of city status, and theRoyal visit which so happilycrowned that auspicious occasion,as having occurred on June 10instead of July 10.

We hope that this unfortunatemistake caused no confusion inthe minds of Her Majesty andher family, or the good citizensof the proud new city, leadingthem to wonder if they had par-ticipated in an event a full monthahead of when it actually tookplace.

Fred's brother Mike was the consolation round winner in thechampionship flight of the big star-studded tourney, and his caddywas another brother, Tim, who was runner-up in the recent NorthernOntario junior finals, So the 1970 Invitational came up with aSilver lining.

"Now I can go to Finland!"was Topi Sarkioja's happy com-ment when he was presented witha $1,000 Inco suggestion planaward at Crean Hill mine. Topihas been hankering for a tripback to his homeland, and theidea jackpot made it an earlycertainty.

The brain-wave that paid offso handsomely for Topi was hissuggestion for an improvementin the control chain support, in-stalled in shrinkage and blastholechutes to eliminate the old con-ventional brow beam.

An Inco man since 1964, Topiis a construction leader at CreanHill. With his wife Anelma andthree children he lives on a farmin the Beaver Lake area about 10miles from the mine, where hehas a herd of 25 Holsteins thatkeeps him hustling in his sparetime.

This is the second $l.000award presented to a Crean Hillemployee, Ed Cuddy, now ofFrood Stobie mill, having hit thejackpot in February of last year.

During the past year, six othersuggestions have earned $1 ,000

awards, four from the CopperCliff mill and two from CopperCliff smelter.

On June 1, 1968, the Sugges-tion Plan was revised to offer agreater incentive and encouragea more active participation by allhourly - rated employees. Themaximum award was raised from$1,000 to $5,000.

Since the inception of the re-vised Suggestion Plan a total of$28,377 has been won by hourly-rate employees.

Now serving with the BritishRoyal Navy is the world's firstmajor warship to be propelled en-tirely by gas turbines, which aremuch smaller, lighter and quicker-starting than the steam turbinesconventionally used- She is the1,500-ton Blackwood Class frigateH.M.S. Exinouth, which has beenconverted from steam-turbinepower to become a working test-bed for marine gas turbines underactual service conditions. Ex-perience with the ship will havea big influence on the power sys-tems chosen for future genera-tions of warships.

The chief problem with gas tur-bines is that they burn a greatdeal of fuel, especially when theyare operated at much less thanfull power. This is highly incon-venient in naval service becausewarships spend most of their lifecruising at low power and onlyoccasionally need to accelerate totheir maximum speed when actionis imminent. The answer is toprovide the ship with several gasturbines that can be brought intouse successively as the power de-mand rises. Moreover, relativelysmall gas turbines can be used toprovide the low powers needed forcruising, and a much bigger gasturbine can be held in reserve forthe 'sprint' condition.

In H.M.S. Ex,nourh, endurancecruising is handled by two 3,500-hp Rolls-Royce Marine Proteusengines that can power the shipeither individually or together,and the 'sprint' engine is a 15,000-hp Marine Olympus. All threeengines drive into a common gear-box by way of synchro self-shift-ng clutches controlled from amachinery control room. Onceany engine has been started andengaged, forward or astern speedsare adjusted by a single controllever either in the control roomor on the bridge.

The main gearing of theship is largely made of nickelalloy steels containing from 2½to 4¼ per cent nickel. H.M.S.Etm9uth has a single propellerand, since the conversion, this isof the controllable-pitch type sothat astern movement can beachieved merely by moving theblades into reverse pitch; theseblades are cast in a nickel-alu-minium-bronze alloy. Anotherimportant use of nickel is in theseawater piping, which is of90/10 cupro-nickel alloy.

Mary, whose exchange partnerwas Monique Bessette of Mont-real, told the Triangle "We havemade a lasting friendship, andare planning to visit each otheragain, either at Christmas or nextsummer. I know the experiencehas helped me in understandingand speaking French, and Mon-ique said it was the same with herwith English.'

on the train that picked us upalong the way to our partners'homes in Quebec,"

Almost 3,000 students, one halfFrench-speaking and the otherhalf English-speaking, participatedin the project, designed to pro-mote a greater appreciation of('anada's two major culturalgroups. The students spent twoweeks at each other's homes, andenjoyed bus tours and otherarranged entertainment.

50 Years MarriedThe dictionary gives an old

Scottish definition of a spenceas "the part of a house where thefamily sit and eat." And so, trueto the name, Coniston's Mr. andMrs. Fred Spencer recently satdown with most of their familyand ate, this time for a very spe-cial reason - five decades hadpassed since Fred married Marie-Anne Grimard in Sudbury onJuly 26. 1920.

The Spencer family has grownwonderfully since that weddingday 50 years ago. Of the 300who sat down to dinner at theSorrento Hotel to honor Fredand his wife, 69 were direct des-cendants of the "bride andgroom". Twelve children, 43grandchildren and 14 great-grand-children comprise the latest cen-sus of the living Spencer tree.

Seven of Fred's nine sons workfor Inco. Counting Fred's own41 years' service, the Spencer boyshave so far racked up an impres-sive 193 years.

North Bay DecidesStack No Danger

A special committee of theNorth Bay and District Chamberof Commerce is unanimously con-vinced that the planned 1,250 ft.Inco stack at Copper Cliff willnot represent danger to that area.

Ken Esselmont, chairman ofthe chamber's anti-pollution com-mittee, announced a lengthy meet-ing with Inco representatives produced convincing evidence thatemissions from the stack will bewell within the limits of safetyprovided by the provincial govern-ment.

The meeting was at PinewoodPark, and was attended by Dr.Louis S. Renzoni, vice-president,special technical projects, Inco,Toronto, and Dr. Morris Katz,professor of chemistry, naturalsciences division, York University,along with six members of theC of C including president BillOlmsted.

The senior Mr. Spencer worked35 of his 41 Inco years as aconverter aisle crarleman at Con-iston. Now 73, he is in excellenthealth. His wife is "muchyounger" and after successfultreatment of a circulatory trouble,she, too, is well on her way toenjoying good health.

Mayor Mike Solski of theTown of Coniston was the emceefor the gala celebration. Manymessages of congratulations werereceived. Friends and relativesfrom as far away as Quebec Cityand Winnipeg were in attendance.

Fred retired from the Companyin 1963. He and his wife willcontinue to reside in Coniston.

Manitoulin Island has changedlittle from the time the Indiansmoved there many moons ago.The bear-walker, or medicineman, still walks the island fore-telling the future. Deer roamwoodlands, and 101 lakes aboundin fish.

Take Highway 17 to McKerrowand turn south onto the vastlyimproved Highway 68. The roadwinds its way through Espanola,crosses a series of causeways link-ing Birch Island and Great ClocheIsland, and finally traverses a

swing bridge that leads into LittleCurrent, Manitoulin's largest town(population 1,600).

Although it is the largest fresh-water island in the world (110miles long and from 3 to 50 mileswide), Manitoulin is still smallenough to circumnavigate in oneday. It is advisable, though, totake at least two days and to leaveplenty of free time for sightseeing,shopping and meandering downside roads where cows, sheep,ducks and pigs have right of way.

Heading south and followingthe Manitowaning Bay coast, theroad ambles by blue lakes,through green valleys and acrossrocky, treed hills. Old fashionedsnake fences zig-zag along bothsides of the road.

An Ancient CivilizationFirst point of interest is She-

guiandah, a small village six milesfrom Little Current. It is builton the site of one of the oldestcivilizations in North America.Artifacts dating back 30,000 yearshave been dug from the surround-ing hills. Many of these are ondisplay in Ottawa's NationalMuseum.

A few miles farther on is alookout with splendid views ofManitowaning Bay. Then the roadveers east to go through the nor-thern section of the SheguiandahIndian Reserve, one of five onthe island (there are 3,600 Indians,accounting for about one-thirdof the population).

Next town is Manitowaning, re-puted to have been the home ofthe Great Spirit Manitou. Leg-ends relate he went by strangeways to visit his people, walkingthrough an underground passage-way between the mainland andthe Wikwemekong Peninsula. Toprove to the Indians such a tunneldid not exist tagged fish were onceturned loose in South Bay. Acouple of days later one wascaught in Manitowaning Bay.

The town boasts the only racetrack on the island (harness racingis popular in the summer), theoldest church in northern Ontario,and an oldtime home, blacksmith'sshop and museum, all with displays of early island life.

NEW INCO ALLOYSSix new nickel-base alloys have

been developed in the researchlaboratories of InternationalNickel. All resistant to high-tem-perature corrosion, the alloys areof interest for applications inmarine and industrial gas turbineswhere components are particularlyprone to hot-corrosion by sulphat-ed sea salt or the products ofcombustion of impure fuels.

Possible applications include ro-tor blades, flame tubes, nozzleguide vanes and stressed parts ingas turbines operating at temper-atures up to I,000°C.

Unfortunate SquawNow the road turns north and

wends up to Gore Bay, on theNorth Channel coast. Along theway turnoffs lead to lakes Minde-moya, Big Manitou and Kaga-wong. Out in Lake Mindemoya(Ojibway for old woman) is asmall island that looks somewhatlike a human figure in a crawlingposition. Legend relates it wasonce a woman, the squaw of achief. One day she spoiled abrew being readied for a councilmeeting. In his rage the chiefkicked the squaw off a cliff. Shelanded on her hands and knees inthe water and was transformedinto an island.

Gore Bay, on the main east-vest highway and about midwaybetween Little Current and theNew England-type town of Mel-drum Bay on the westernmostpoint, is the seat of Manitoulin'sgovernment. A livewire littletown with wide streets and flower-bordered lawns, it has a deepharbor lying between high hills.It also boasts of the island's onlyairport (frequently the site ofIndian folklore dances in thesummer), a weekly dance and aSaturday morning farmers marketthat commences at lO a.m.

Freezers Can TurnInto "Death Boxes"For Young Children

Do you have a freezer in yourhouse? A picnic cooler? And ayoung child to fit into them? Thenbe especially wary, for an alarm-ing number of children are suf-focating in these 'death boxes"right in their own homes.

When authorities tabulated thenumber of suffocations in re-frigerators for 1964 they dis-covered that the toll was a shock-ing 44- the worst on record.The previous all-time high was inl962 when 35 youngsters died inrefrigerators.

"Everyone knows the aban-doned refrigerator on a backporch or empty lot can be akiller," says Phil Dykstra, head ofthe National Safety Council'shome department. "But fewpeople suspect that children willalso crawl into a small cooler orfreezer. These, too, are tightlyinsulated, and the air supply inthe small cooler is quickly ex-hausted."

While his mother thought hewas riding his tricycle, a four-year-old boy in New York lastyear wandered into the garage andclimbed into a picnic cooler hisfather had bought two weeks pre-viously. Although the cooler wasonly 22 inches long, 12 incheswide and 15 inches deep, the childmanaged to squeeze tightly inside.The lid fell shut and locked. Theboy's sister, sent to look for him,found the dead child lying on hisback.

This is hardly a freak case.Three other children died in al-most identical accidents last sum-mer in Denver, Chicago andHouston.

Three Little VictimsIn California, a mother left the

lid of an empty freezer open toair it out in the garage and closedthe overhead door to the garage.Several hours later, when she wentto look for her two young chil-dren, she was stricken with fearto see the garage doors open. Sheran to the now closed freezer andtugged at the lid, but it had lockedupon falling. Finally she got thekey from the house and openedthe lid to find three children -two of her own - huddled to-gether in the five-foot longfreezer. None could be revived.

Golden WeddingClose friends and immediate

family numbering about 30 inall gathered at the Copper CliffClub to honor Mr. and Mrs. TomDunn on the occasion of their50th wedding anniversary. There

was a note of nostalgia at theparty, since Tom had spent allbut two of his 23 Inco years assteward of the club until his re-tirement on disability pension in1952.

Born in Goldenburg, Ontario,near Thessalon, Tom marriedMargaret Smith at Wiarton. Shewas born at Stokes Bay on theBruce Peninsula. In their 50years together, they have seentheir four sons and two daugh-ters go on to raise their ownfamilies and present them with I 7grandchildren.

Two of Toms sons are Inco-ites: Donald (Red) works in theCopper Cliff North mine ware-house, and Mac at the J. RoyGordon Research Laboratory atSheridan Park, Toronto.

Both Tom and his wife, whoare 79 and 76 respectively, areenjoying very good health. Iheyhave resided at their Guilletvillehome since l954.

IN A LOVELY TRANQUIL SETTING on the south shorelineof Lake Shebandowan in Northwestern Ontario, 50 miles west ofThunder Bay, one of International Nickel's new mining expansionoperations unobtrusively enters the scene. Inco's Good Neighbor PolicyAt Shebandowan Development

Can a nickel mine and conserva-tion-minded outdoors enthusiastsfind happiness together? Interna-tional Nickel believes they can.

The Company is presently developinga 2,900-ton-per-day nickel mine on theshores of Lake Shebandowan, 50 mileswest of Thunder Bay in NorthwesternOntario, and is taking a number of pre-cautions to ensure that, when the minecomes into full production in the fall of1972, it will do so quietly, cleanly andefficiently.

For example, in order to limit surfaceactivity and noise on the lake shore, theCompany is driving an inclined tunnelfrom the mine shaft to the mill, locateda half mile inland. Ore will be conveyedunderground by belt rather than by truckon the surface. In addition, service lineswill pass through the tunnel rather thanon the surface. The Company is also

hard surfacing the 10-mile access roadfrom the provincial highway to allay thedust.

Exceptional precautions have beentaken to ensure that International Nickel'soperations do not harm the water in LakeShebandowan and nearby streams. TheCompany has retained the firm of JamesF. MacLaren Limited, consulting en-gineers, to undertake a study of both thelake and the Mattawin River watershed.Last summer, six separate surveys wereconducted by this firm, and no markedchanges in the quality of the waterthroughout the area due to Companyoperations were found. A continuingprogram of water quality monitoring willenable International Nickel to keep trackof even the smallest changes in the aqua-tic environment and take protective mea-sures if necessary.

The concrete headframe, the construc-tion of which will start next spring, willhave a clean, uncluttered appearance.

All permanent surface buildings will beof attractive design and located on land-scaped ground.

Finally, International Nickel is makingan effort to keep area property ownersapprised of its activities at the Sheban-dowan mine site through periodic lettersto their homes.

Development of the Shebandowan mineis part of International Nickel's sevei-year, $1.1 billion Canadian expansionprogram. At the completion of the pro-gram, the Company will have 19 minesin Canada - IS in Ontario and four inthe Thompson area of Manitoba.

The No. 2 production shaft at She-bandowan will reach its planned depth of2,395 feet this month, and developmentof underground workings will then pro-ceed. The No. 1 exploration shaft,located about a mile from the productionshaft, has reached its full depth of 1,132feet. This shaft will become a part ofthe mine's ventilation system followingthe completion of underground explora-tion.

The Shebandowan property was ac-quired by International Nickel in 1937.Small scale drilling work went on in thearea from then until it was greatly inten-sified starting in 1965.

1978 Is DeadlineFor Long-RangePollution Control

International Nickel's currentlong-range program for pollutioncontrol is to be completed by1978 under a directive issued July21 by Ontario's energy and re-sources minister George Kerr. Thedeadline was reached after de-tailed conferences between of fi-cials of the provincial departmentof mines and Inco representativeson the ramifications of the multi-million dollar undertaking.

In issuing his directive Mr.Kerr stressed the Company'sstatement made some months agothat the $15 million chimney toreplace the three existing stacksat Copper Cliff smelter by theend of 1971 is considered an in-terim measure only. The ulti-mate objective is removal of allpollutants at their source, onwhich intensive research has beenin progress for a considerabletime.

Three Steps SpecifiedThree steps are specified in the

ministerial order:- By December, 1972, sul-

phur dioxide emissions at theiron ore recovery plant in Waterstownship will, through an en-largement of the sulphuric acidplant, be reduced by 90 per cent.

- Sulphur dioxide emissionsat the Copper Cliff complex willbe reduced by means of a newmetallurgical process. By 1974the reduction will be 15 per cent,by 1976, 30 per cent, and 85 percent by 1978.

- Reduction in sulphur diox-ide emissions from the Conistonsmelter will be 90 per cent bythe end of 1978.

Two Projects Already UnderwayOf the long-term projects in-

volved, two are already underway,each biggest in the world in itsfield. The concrete shell of the1,250-foot chimney will be com-pleted this month, and work willcommence immediately on in-stallation of the steel liner alongwith the new precipitation plantand extensive new flue system.Also well advanced are plans forthe new 2,300-tpd sulphuric acidplant, which will be entirely fi-nanced by Inco at a cost of $20million, with an extra $5 millionfor acid storage facilities; it willbe operated by Canadian Indus-tries Limited in conjunction withits present sulphuric acid com-plex. It is being undertaken.coincidentally with expansion ofthe iron ore recovery plant andthe construction of the new nickelrefinery, to eliminate the iron orerecovery plant as a potentialsource of air pollution, not onlyfrom sulphur dioxide, but alsofrom dust. All dust must be re-moved as a prerequisite to sul-phuric acid production.

Slurry Coating Inco InventionHe also discussed slurry coat-

ing, an Inco invention still in thedevelopment stage, which permitsprecoating cold-rolled steel stripwith a thin layer of nickel. An-other new Inco powder concept,he explained, was mechanical al-loying which combines precipita-tion and dispersion hardening.

By combining these two har-dening concepts through mechani-cal blending of suitable powders,"Mr. Gagnebin said, 'we at Incoare certain we have found oneway that the best of both alloyworlds can be achieved. Let the

imagination wander for a momentwith this mechanical alloying con-cept: if dispersoids can be addedfor strength, why not othermechanically blended additivesfor color effects? Whole newmarkets may thus be created.

"No one company, workingalone, can assure the future ofpowder metallurgy. But 200 com-panies exchanging ideas andworking together, both in labora-tories and pilot plants, can createa giant new industry: an industrythat is dynamic, exciting, respon-sive to new demands, and at thesame time profitable.

"If we respond to changingdesign and application conceptsby offering new imaginative prod-ucts and processes, the future willbe bright, and perhaps somedaythe Seventies will be known asthe Decade of Powder Metal-lurgy," Mr. Gagnebin concluded.

A Plugged Nickel?Although an ordinary 'nickel"

is worth only five cents, there arefive nickel" coins valued at$50,000 apiece. This came aboutbecause five unauthorized Lib-erty Head "nickels" were mintedin 1913, the year the Buffalo de-sign took over. The "nickel" isactually 25 per cent nickel and 7Sper cent copper.

New Wire Line SystemDiamond Drilling Boon

A major development that takes the drudgery out ofdiamond drilling, and opens the way to more efficient tech-niques, is the underground wire line system being introducedat International Nickel mines in the Sudbury district.

Wire line diamond drilling is now in use in explorationwork at the Levack, Murray. and Copper Cliff North mines,and will gradually replace conventional diamond drilling inoutlining the orebodies in all Inco's underground operations.

Under the old method, every time a core barrel in a drillhole was filled, the entire string of 30-foot drill rods had tobe hoisted to the drilling station and disconnected length bylength until the core barrel finally came up and its inner tubecould be emptied. Then the operation had to be reversed, eachlength of rod reconnected until the complete string was returnedto the hole and drilling could be resumed.

Most of Time Just Handling RodsBy the time a hole reached 2,000 feet, for example, the

diamond driller and his helper were using about two and a halfhours handling rods for every hour and a half of actual drillingto obtain 15 feet of core. And those rods weighed 5 lbs.per foot.

Now, with the wire line system, it's a brand new ballgame. Instead of raising and lowering a drill string maybe15 times in a week on the basis of a hole in the 2,00-footrange, the drill crew pulls rods only two or three times, andthen usually just to check the condition of the drill bit andreaming shell.

This new approach uses an assembly inserted in the toptwo feet of the core barrel inner tube, consisting of two rubbershut-off valves and two self-locking spring latches, cappedby a spearhead or pick-up point. The bit, shell, core barreland rods are then lowered into the hole in the conventionalmanner, the water turned on, and drilling commenced. Whenthe core barrel is full the shut-off valves expand and stop theflow of water through the hole, which is immediately signalledto the driller by a jump in his water pressure guage.

He unscrews the rod at the top of the hole to disconnectthe water connection, leaving the top of the drill string open.The hoist is then turned on and an overshot, which is a liftingdevice attached to a short weighted rod, is lowered rapidlydown through the entire drill string on a ½-inch stainlesssteel wire.

Now Only the Core Tube Is PulledWhen the overshot hits the spearhead of the core tube

soon as the hoist starts pulling on the wire, thespring-loaded latches in the core tube assemblyretract, and only the tube containing the drill coreis brought up to the station, at the rate of about400 feet per minute.

The driller sets the core tube aside to beemptied later, and drops another inner tube witha spearhead assembly down the drill string, aftermaking certain the rods are full of water. He startsthe water pump immediately to assist the down-ward travel of the inner tube into the core barrelat the bottom of the hole, where its assemblypromptly latches it in position and drilling isresumed. The exchange of tubes takes about 20minutes in a 2.000-foot hole, compared to twoand a half hours by the old method.

Sudburv Rock Was Far Too HardWire line diamond drilling was introduced by

the E. J. Longyear Company some years ago inNew Mexico, but investigations by InternationalNickel found it unsuitable for the Sudbury district.The thinner drill rods necessary to allow passagecf the core tube assembly just wouldn't stand thegaff of deep drilling in the very hard rocks of the

ickel Basin. The solution came when Longyeardeveloped a much stronger nickel alloy rod with a9-inch chromed section at the end, and also a newtype of self-sealing thread with a one-degree taper,that greatly strengthened the joints in the drillstring.

Though the wire line system has sharply in-creased diamond drilling efficiency, the old bug-bear of hole deviation is still a problem. Nobodyseems to know exactly why, but a drill hole ofteninsists on wandering off from the direction inwhich it is aimed, and consequently must be regu-larly checked by various tests, including thelowering of a special internal survey instrumentafter about every 500 feet of progress. Deviationsare corrected by a time-consuming method ofweLlging to steer the bit back on line.

Will Enlarge Research OpportunitiesWith the increased efficiency of the new

system, Inco's diamond drilling department willhave more latitude in which to continue its re-search into ;uch factors as size and design of bits,drill speed in various types of ground, etc., toreduco deviation to a minimum.

Now living in Beachville, On-tario, Gus and Mrs. Walford -who shared her husband's en-thusiasm by serving as Sudburyand District Kennel Club secre-tary for the five years prior totheir move south - are active inthe Oxford Kennel Club. Their14-year-old poodle, Sudburyobedience champion "GuardsmanNicholas", is now represented byhis 8-year-old "daughter", "Guard'sAutumn Haze".

Athletics have always been alarge part of Archie's life. "I started to playgolf four years ago and find it areal challeng'," he said. His wifeEvelyn has shared his love ofsports and has also been a highlyproficient performer.

Archie is a strong supporter ofyouth work and for years has in-structed groups of youngsters onthe finer points of tennis and bad-minton. He will be deeply in-volved in the local minor hockeyprogram this winter. He and hiswife are planning a trip to Eng-land and Scotland to visit relatives."I've always been pretty active,but now I'm supposed to be re-tired I seem to be busier thanever," he said with a happy grin.

He was married in Sudbury toAlveretta Evoy. a former Hamil-ton girl. Betty, one of their twochildren, is the wife of HarryStephenson of the Copper Cliffmachine shop.

Richard and his wife particu-larly enjoy pickerel fishing on theManitoulin, and growing flowersat their home in Sudbury.

Not all the denizens of Sudbury's watery depths are fish. In-deed, 72 of them are altogetherhuman, and some even female,but when equipped with theirunderwater breathing apparatus,the members of the DolphinAquatic Club are quite at homein the environment normally re-served for the scaley species.

Originally formed by personnelof the RCAF radar station at Fal-conbridge, the Dolphin club haslong since "gone public," but for-tunately is still allowed use of

Explore Ship WrecksWhen diving for summer sport,

much of the club's activity takesplace in the waters on and aroundManitoulin Island. In the depthsadjoining its thousands of milesof shoreline, the island has manyship wrecks that are a joy to ex-plore. Members recently dis-covered a 2,000-pound anchor in100 feet of water near LittleCurrent, and plans are under wayto retrieve it.

Trial Dive for NovicesAlthough a completely equip-

ped scuba diver spends upwardsof $400 on his equipment, theDolphins' policy in training anovice diver makes no such out-lay for equipment necessary. Theclub supplies the gear during thepreliminary training stages, sothat a novice can find out for anominal sum whether or not hisinterest in scuba diving dissolvesas soon as he gets under water.
