NM Historicallygeologically the area would have been part of the sea floor This is further proved by the existing geology of the area ndash large shale deposits The water would always have been brackish due to slats leaching from the geological structures in the area

NM It is also brackish water

The abstraction site is approximately 25 km upstream of the Fish River mouth and approximately 7 km upstream of the estuary in the ldquofreshwaterrdquo environment Infrastructure at the abstraction site would include a weir across the river settling channels for the sediments pump stations etc to convey the water to Dabi Dam

Dear SirMadam As the landowners on the east bank of the Riet river from the ocean up to the St Francis health center my family and I would like to register as interested and affected parties in the Ndlambe bulk water scheme I have lived my whole life on this farm as did my father grandfather and great granfather My father and I are well aquainted with this riverine ecosystem including the vast variety of fauna and flaura it sustains Are you aware that this river does not have a large catchment area and that during the frequent dry spells the riverine ecosystem is sustained by the springs that trickle in at various points



along its course Pumping out grounwater from the two boreholes that have been sunk at the present location during these times of drought will have an extremely detrimental effect on this riverine ecosystem as they will be drawing directly from the grounwater that sustains it This river ecosystem is still in good condition as most farmers in the catchment area are ecologically aware There is not much cultivation within the catchment area either therefore we dont have problems with fertiliser leaching erosion and silting etcIt would be a great pity to tamper with this ecosystem in such a drastic manner especially as it is in such healthy condition The preservation of this river has not just happened by accident it has taken a combined effort by many people mostly the landowners over many generations After one walk thru the Yellowood and Sneezewood forests it is easy to see why the stewards of this river are so passionate about it We therefore strongly recommend that the boreholes be moved out off the Riet river into the Kowie river system which is already impacted Lets not degrade and risk a functioning ecosystem which is in good condition to support another This groundwater abstraction effort is a quick short term fix with detrimental ecological impacts on a functioning indiginous riverine ecosystem when a little further down the road all the water one would need is flowing out to sea daily whether we are experiencing drought or not Lets focus efforts on that aspect of this water scheme as its ecological impacts will not be threatening an ecosystem complete with ecologically sensitive stewards in place with a track record to prove it Tom and Chris Webb of Tharfield Farm Email christhreesistershorsetrailscoza

Once all of their reports are collated CES will finalise their Basic Assessment Report and

along with all of the specialist assessments these will be circulated to all interestedaffected

parties for their comment During this period we will hold more public meetings

Only once the commenting period for the reports has come to an end will we submit our

I have one query relating to the sustainability of ground water extraction (particularly from

Cannon Rocks area where I reside)

I am sure that there have been or will be calculations on proposed extraction rates vs

groundwater reserve and recharge rates One would then assume that these are based on long

term data and not recent tests as the area experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall

particularly during the winter months of 2011 when some boreholes seem to have been tested
