Theorganiza0onweselectedfor our 2017 charity is TheJesse TreeofIdaho. TheJesseTree of Idahohelpslow-income,workinghouseholds avoidhomelessness.Insteadofwai0ngforindividuals/families tobecomehomeless,TheJesse Treeac0vely seeks tostopthehomelessnessfromhappening. Seemoreaboutthecharitylaterinthisissue.

ThePresident’s MysteryTourwasa greatdrivetoMcCall.Themysterywas not thedes0na0on,buttheroute.Forthistourwewentvia PayeTeandupID95.Weluckedintogreatweatherforthedrive.Severalcars spent the night inMcCall where weenjoyeddinner anddrinksatthe Anchor Restaurant.Muchtoourdismay,wewoketoseveralinchesofsnowSundaymorning.Fortunately,itwasgonebynoon.
My thanks toWaylonGoebel,the SnakeRiverSCCA,BlairBaertschandmany others forsteppingup, sowewere againabletoholdanAutocross ClinicandCompe00onwithsponsorshipby PorscheofBoise.Themorning session familiarized the registrantswith the course and different aspectsof driving anautocross.Thea[ernoonwas spentenjoyingthecourse.Theeventwas helda[erthear0cledeadline,soitwillbereportedoninthenextissue.
Parade inSpokane.By now, I hopeyouareregistered for the upcomingPorscheParadetobeheld inSpokaneonJuly9th–16th.Molly&GaryCuddefordare planningonholdinga pre-ParadeplanningsessionattheirhomeonJune 24th.IfyouplanonaTendingthisyear’s Parade,this gatheringwill beagood0metomeetandshareideas withothers fromourregionwhoare aTendingthe 2017PorscheParade.Detailswillbepublishedviaemailsoon,andanar0cleshouldappearinthenextSageTick.
As I notedinthelastissueoftheSageTick,we will notbeholdingthe Bogus Basin Bacchanaliain2017.Bogus Basinis nolonger allowinghill climbs andtheywill be doingextensive remodelingthis summer.WaltThodehas volunteeredtoleada trip toOregoninAugust–moreonthis as Walt works out thelogis0cs.I amworkingwithRexChandlerandDerekParkertodevelopanewformatfora2018BBB;staytunedformoredetails.

InMay,of2017,PorscheAGreachedamilestoneofepicpropor0on,astheonemillionth911rolledofftheproduc0onlineinZuffenhausen,Germany.Theoneofcar,paintedthissick“IrishGreen”color,wasfinishedatthePorscheExclusiveCenter,andfeaturednumerousuniqueop0onsandfeatures.PorschemadethecaraCarrera“S”model,andinthe45-pagepresskit,thereisnomen0onastowherethecarwillbeheaded.IhavetothinkthePorscheMuseum,butperhapsthecarwillindeedendupinthehandsofaprivateowneratsomepoint.OnlyPorsche’smarke0ngteamiscapableofcrea0ngsuchaninsanepressreleaseforacar,andfrankly,itwasoverkill.ButIguessiftheoldU.S.NavySEALmoToholdsup,ifitisworthdoing,itisworthoverdoing.

SilverSagersRobertSturgeon,SidCannon,andIrecentlymadethetriptoUtahMotorsportsCampus(UMC)nearTooele,UtahfortheIntermountainRegion’sfirstDrivers’Educa0on(DE)eventof2017.
ThetriptoUMCisaneasydriveoninterstateallthewayandthereareseveralgoodhotelsandrestaurantstochoosefrom.IhadheardgoodthingsaboutUMCanditisanexcellentfacility.Thetrackisengaging,safeandingreatcondi0on.Thepaddockandotherfacili0esaretopnotch.

ItsnowedinTooeleFridaynightbeforetheDEbutbySaturdayitwasacrisp,clearmorning.Uponarrivingatthetrack,par0cipantscheckedinandhadtheircarsinspected.TheIntermountainDEteamknowshowtorunasafe,smoothandwell-coordinatedDEevent.Thedaystartedoutwithadrivers’mee0ngthatincludedareviewofsafetyprocedures,flagsanddrivingtechniques.Driversaregroupedaccordingtoexperienceintothreedifferentrungroups.A[erthedrivers’mee0ng,new
driverspairedupwiththeirinstructorsfortheday,whoprovidein-carinstruc0onandguidance.Theinstructorsareyourpersonalcoachesforthedayandtheirroleistohelpnewdriversgetfamiliarwithdrivingatspeed,thecapabili0esoftheircarandtheracetrack.
UMChasfourdifferentconfigura0onsthatthetrackcanberun.WewererunningtheEastLoopandoverontheWestloop,Fordwasfilmingwithprofessionaldriverspilo0ngsixbrandnewFordGTsaswellasavintageGT.Quiteasight!
A[erourfirstsession,Robert,Sid,andIwerestar0ngtogetthefeelofthecourse.AcoupleoflapsintothesecondsessionandIwastunedintotherhythmofthetrackandpushingaliTleharder.Butmydaywascutshortasarearhalfsha[brokeandIhadtohangupmyhelmetfortherestoftheday.Althoughequipmentproblemsdohappenoccasionally,thiswasonlythesecond0mein17yearsI’vehadaday-endingmechanicalproblem.Toobad–itwasreallygelngfun!

OnabrightandbriskSaturdaymorninginMay,Iwokeupextraearlytogetsomecoldbrewcoffeeinmysystem.Todaywasthedayofthefamed“President’sMysteryTour.”BeingarecenttransplanttoIdaho,thisisonlymysecondeventwiththeSilverSageRegion,butIknewfromtheweekendbeforethatyouallknowhowtoputonanevent.AquickshowerandgroomingwasallIreallyneededfortheday.WhatIreallyneededwastogetdownstairstowashmycar.SodownIgooutsidetogetthebucketandfoamgunready.DidImen0onitwasbrisk?AquickglanceatmyiPhoneshowed37degrees.WhydidIleaveSunnyCaliforniaagainforthis?(Moreonthatlater.)
AnhourandchangeiswhatittooktogetthepaintandinteriorinwhatIdeem“acceptable”condi0on.IsayacceptablebecausewheneverIwashmycarsitusuallyrainswithinadayorso.Freezingcoldbutwithacleancar,Idashedbackinsidetowarmupwithmorecoldbrew.The0mewasapproachingwhenIwouldhavetosetoffforCafeCraneinEagle.OncemoreIgrabbedmykeys,andthis0meajacket,andoffIheadedtothelocalChevron.AquicktopoffandoncemoreIwasontheroad.
Pullingintotheparkinglot,atwhatIthoughtwasontheearlysideof0me,wasalreadyagatheringofabout12carsandfriendlyfacesallenjoyingeachotherscompany.Iloopedaroundonceandfoundaparkingspotarowawayfromthecrowd.AssoonasIjumpedoutofthecar,Iwasgreetedbyafamiliarface.SidCannonhadcomeovertosayhello.ThepreviousweekendattheCoffee&Carsevent,SidhadsingledoutmywifeLisaandmefromthecrowdandintroducedhimself,andhiswifeVicki.Wehadagoodchatateachstop,withSidfillingusbothinonthelocalchapter,thepeopleandcars,aswellassomerecommenda0onsonvariousshopsandrestaurants.
IwasgladtoseeSidandVickihadmadeitout,itmeantIhadsomeonetositwithatlunchoncewereachedMcCall.MywifehadjuststartedhernewjobandwasinSoCalfortraining,soIhadplannedonbeinga5thwheelsomewhere.Moreandmorecarsshowedup,andthecrowdgotevenlarger.SomefolksscurriedovertoCafeCraneforbreakfastbeforewesetout.Oncethehelloshadbeensaid,IwentbacktomycartosetupmyGoProbeforedeparture.Aquickdrivers’mee0ngheldbyPresidentJohnSommerwerckinstructedustobreakintotwogroupsofcars,withabout10ineach.
Beingthatmywifewasoutoftown,IknewIcouldopenthecarupaliTlemorewithoutmuchobjec0on,soIwantedtomakesureIwasapartofthefirstgroup.Everyonefireduptheircars,andweslowlyrolledoutoftheWinCoparkinglotanddownthehighway.AlreadyIwasgelngexcited,asI’veonlyhadmy964forabout3months.Workingfromhomefull0menowdoesn’twarranttheneedtodriveiteveryday,whichhasbeenabitofaletdown.Soassoonastheroadcleared,IrolledonthethroTletohearthatgloriousair-cooledflatsixgrowl.Ican’tbegintotellyouguyshowinlovewiththis carIam.Itreplacedmy1986944Turbo(whichwasanabsoluteriotitself),butthiscarsomehowtakes ittoanewlevel,whiles0llbeingslowerthantheoutgoinggarageoccupant.
Weturnedoffthehighwaytotakesomelocalfarmroads.Theen0re0mespentenjoyingthepassingscenery,thegrayBoxsterandwhitePanamerabehindme,andSidandVicki’s997GT3infront.IfidgetedaroundwiththeGoProremoteonceinawhiletomakesureIwass0llrecording.Outofthefarmroadsandbacktothehighwaywewent.AndallIcoulddowassmileasIrippeddowntheroad,andwatchedonebyoneaseachcarre-enteredthehighway.
ItwasnicetoseethatJohnandthefourorfivecarsthatmadeitthroughbeforetheparadehadpulledovertowaitfortherestofus.Oncetheyhadpassed,wewerebackuptospeedandonourwaytothe

secondstop.Themileskeptrollingovertheodometer,butthescenerykeptgelngbeTerandbeTer.Themusicwasalowervolume,sothatIcouldenjoysomemotorsounds,andthewindowwascrackedasthetempshadmovedpastthefrigidmark.ThroughaliTlemorefarmlandwemadeittooursecondstopinCouncilforonelastsplashanddash.This0me,theparkinglotwasmuchsmaller,soweformedtwolinesforthefirstgroup.
Aswele[,IendedupbehindanabsolutelystunningTurquoiseBlue993C4SownedbyBobandVickiPentecost.DidImen0onitwasstunning?Itwas.Alsoonmyshortlist,Igotachancetostareatitsfullyshapedhipsonourlastlegofthejourney,un0lwegottothereallyfunpart-themountains.Beingthatmyseat0mehasbeenlimitedinthiscar,anditismyfirstrear-engined,rearwheeldrivecar,Iwashesitanttopushit.ButwatchingwhatthatC4Sinfrontofmewascapableof,IstartedtogiveitjustaliTlebitmore.Wewoundthroughaboutfortyminutesworthofmountainroads,onlytakingbreakswhenwewouldgetstuckbehindaslowermovingvehicle.Fortunately,therewerepullouts,andeveryoneontheroadwascourteousenoughtou0lizethemsothatIandmynewbestfriendofa993couldpegthoserevlimiterssomemore.
Eventuallytheroadscalmed,andstraightenedout.Thespeedlimitdroppedbackdownto45,andIshi[edintoahighergeartoletthemotortakeaverywell-earnedbreak.Werolledtogetherasagroup,pastthelakeshorehousesandintodowntownMcCall,pullingintoaparkinglotatwhatappearedtobetheedgeoftown.Theexhaustsonebyonestoppedtheirpurrs,andthenoisewasreplacedbymorefriendlyconversa0ons.
OnceinsidetheTollSta0onPizzadiningroom,wewerequicklygreetedandofferedaseatofourchoosing.SidandVickihadalreadyjoinedanothergroupatafulltable,andIwasstar0ngtogetaliTleworriedaboutbeingaveryquiet5thwheelnow.Isatdownatatablebymyself,butwasjoinedshortlybyRexChandlerandhiswifeMaryBeth,aswellasanothercouplethatmyabilitytoremembernamesiscurrentlylelngmedown.Weallhadafantas0clunchtogether.Talkingaboutthedrive,theclubandhowgreatitsmembersare,andvariousothertopics.I’mquicklyrealizingthatleavingsunnyCaliforniawasforagoodreason.ThepeopleinIdaho,andmorespecifically,thepeopleinthisclubhavebeenamazing.Inmyshort0mehere,I’veexchangedcontactinfowithmorepeopleonafriendlybasisthanatleasthalfofmy15yearsinCalifornia.
AnicespeechbyJohnwasgivenjustbeforewedeparted,andIheadedouttotheparkinglot.SomehadarrangedtospendthenightinMcCall,butIhadtogetback.BeforeIcouldgetintothecar,moremembershadcomeovertotalkaboutthedriveandthe964.WhatIthoughtwasgoingtobeaquickexitturnedintoabout25minutesofcartalkandnewfriendships.Thecloudsstartedrollingin,andIknewIshouldbeonmywaybacktopickupmywifefromtheairport.Wesaidourgoodbyes,andIle[,keepingataverycareful25mphonthewayoutoftownasItookinthemountains,thehouses,thesnow,andwhatturnedouttobealighthail.ImadeitbacktoyetanothermountainpasswhereIhadjustaliTlebitmorefunle[inmeforthedaybeforearrivinghome.
Thedayhadbeen,quitefrankly,anepicjourneywithagreatgroupoffellowPorscheowners…andallIcanthinkaboutnowishowluckyIamtohavemovedtothisbeau0fularea,withsuchhumbleandfriendlyresidentsIcannowcallmyfriends.Here’stothenextepicjourney!

intersec0onisquiteabitlargerthantheprevioussiteandle[ampleroomtodisplayhomedécoritemsaswellasprovideforourgroup’sac0vi0es.Anditwasalargegroup,around70SilverSagers,whotooktheopportunitytowanderthroughthestoreandthenweretreatedtoalavishbuffet,winebyWilliamsonVineyards,scotchandcigars(onthepa0o,thankyou!)andtheopportunitytobuildourownterrariums.Couplethatwith

Thisyearonetradi0onalreasonforSpuds!,theauc0ontohelpsupporttheBogusBasinBacchanaliaweekend,didn’tapply,sinceBBBwon’tbeheldthisyear.Incaseyouhaven’theard,themanagementatBogusBasinhasdecidedthattheywanttousetheareaforotherpurposes.Wehadconsideredjustmee0ngonthehillandhavinganicegathering,buttheirplanstorepavetheroadtoPioneerLodgeandrenovatethelodgewon’tallowthateither.
TheSilverSageboardislookingforalterna0vesitesforahillcrossandtheotherBBBeventsfornextyearandbeyond,butnonehasbeeniden0fiedsofar.

OnThursday,May18,wewereblessedwithsunshinea[eranotherstormpassedthroughtheBoisearea.OurfunroutetotheYakimaValleypassedthroughthehighmountains;duetotherecentstormwereroutedfromOregonHighways82and204,andtookthelessplay0mebutsaferrouteviaI-84.Weenjoyedthedrivewith12cars(2non-Porsche)andsawmuchwildlife;Icounted10pronghornandseveral elkonthedrivetoWallaWalla.
Ourfirstwinestop,Northstar,waslovelywithlunchincludedandwegottohaveourfirstwinetas0ngsonthebeau0fuldeck.Thevineyardwassokindtous,offeringusthememberdiscountonanyboTlesofwinepurchased.“Fillupthetrunk”hadofficiallybegun.A[erlunchtheirhosttookusonatour,whereIlearnedmoreaboutthemakingofwinethenIhadeverlearned.Whatagreattour!Attheendtheyshowedustheblendroomwhereyougottobeyourownwinemakerfortheevening.Aperfectwaytostartourtour.
Nextwetraveledtheshortdistancetoournextvineyard,PepperBridge,andwewereallgoogle-eyedoverthecutenewpuppythere.A[erafewsipsoftheirwineswealsoweregoogle-eyedoverthewineaswell.Mosteveryoneagainenjoyedtheoutdoordecktotasteandmanypurchasedthewinetotaketothenextstop,ourbeau0fulhotel.
WallaWalladowntownisaneasywalktowinetas0ngroomsandbarsforotherdrinks.MansionCreek,MarkRyan,andKontoswerevisitedbysomeofourmembers.Wechosetogasupandthenwashthecar.Thenwewentintothelobbybar,hadacouplemar0nisandmettherestofthegroupfortheshortwalktodinneratJacobi’sCafe.Diningatthetraincarwassointeres0ngandweenjoyedtheplayfulbanterwiththegroup.A[erdinnerwehadjustonemoredrinkthenitwas0metoheadtobed.Noscotchandcigarsthisyear,assomeofourusualmemberswereunabletoaTend.
Fridaywewokeupbrightandearlyandgottothefreebreakfastby9:00a.m.Itwasfantas0c.Ihadtomakeasecondandmaybeathirdtripthroughthebuffet.ThenwehadaliTledown0metoexplorethecity.Wechoosetoaddressasmallissuewiththecarandhaditreadytogowhenweheadedtopickupourlunchesat11:30.BobandVickiPentecostwerespotonagainwithlunchchoicesandweallheadedtoourfirststopoftheday,BaselCellars.Monkeysee,monkeydo;wefollowedGeorgeJolleyintotheservice entrancethatwasclosedandhadtolooparoundtogainaccesstoourvineyard.Itwaswellworththemishap.Welunchedonthepa0o.WaltThodeandhisFridaygroupshowedupandjoinedourThursdaygroup.HewaskindenoughtosharetheboTleheboughtthere.Thenthevineyardhostgatheredusupforagrandtouroftheestate.Itwasasmallhomeyoucanrentoutforthedayortheweekend.Ibelieveitwasjustunder15,000squarefeet.Wetouredthe10bedrooms,themediaroom,thepoolhouseanditwasamazing.Weshouldallpoolourpenniesandstaythere,orsomeone(andyouknowwhoyouare)shouldpayforusalltostaythere.A[ertouringtheytookusdowntothewineroomsthatwereoriginallybuiltforhousingcarsandwetooksomegreatgroupphotos.A[erthatwedroveourcarsaroundthefountainandtookmorephotos.Nextwetookashortruntotwomorevineyardsnearby,Gifford-HirlingerandTertulia,andsampledwine,sharedstoriesandrelaxed.Thenitwasofftothewestandmorewineries;someofusstoppedatWaterbrookandothersatL’Ecole,beforethe45-minutedrivetoRichlandandtheMarrioTCourtyardatColumbiaPoint.Wecheckedinandwashedourcarwiththewashkitthehotelprovided,andgasseduptobereadyforthenextday.Thenweasagrouptooktheshortwalktoourrestaurantfortheevening,LuLu’s,whichoverlooksthewaterway.A[eranotherfinedinnerwemetbackinthehotellobbyforjustonemoredrinkandthenre0redfortheevening.

ImustconfessIwasaguestofamember.SoIwaspolitelyaskedtodotheroadrallywithanotherguestofamember.Wewereevenloanedacar(notaPorsche,aBMW).Weweregiventhefollowinginstruc0onsbyourhosts:“Donotfollowthecarinfrontofyou;itmaybelost.”Thentheotherswentofftostrategizeandplot,sincetheyaregelngreadyfortheSpokanePorscheParaderalliesinJuly.Wenon-membersdidn’tdrinkanymorewine(wink)andheadedtotheRally’sstar0ngspot.Quitequicklywefoundwedidnotknowwhatweweredoingbutwedidmakeittoourfirststopandonlygotpassedby3Porschesonthatleg.IdebatedifIshouldletthempass,butIstucktothespeedlimit.WealmostgotlostbutkepttoourcourseandseemedtobedoingOKexceptforthePorschesthatkeptpassingus.Eventually,weno0cedthatwewerebehindthe0meonthepaper,soIspedup.IquicklypassedabrightredPorschethatIlaterlearnedhadanothernonmembernamedGinoinit.Ireallypassedhim.Iblewhisdoorsoff.Hepulledofftheroad.Hemayhavebeencrying,I’mjustnotsure,itwasablur.Sowemadeitrapidlytothefinish,yeaus!First0meandnonmembers;thatwasawinforus.A[erawhilewesawGinojust100yardsfrompullingintothefinishline,andheturnedthewrongway.NO!Thenthosewhotoldus“don’tfollowaPorsche;itcouldbegoingthewrongway”turnedrightbehindGinoandwentthewrongway.What?AfewminuteslaterBobandVickicamebackdownthesameroad.(Ibelievetheyhadalreadyfinishedbutgotlostgoingtothenextvineyard,andsomypersonalmembersfollowedthembacktothefinishline).EventuallyGinowascalledandhegotbacktothefinishlineaswell.AlmosteveryonemadeitthroughtherallyexceptforGeorgewhosomehowendedupatatas0ngroom.OK,Fastforwardtothewinnersoftheevent.Yes,youguessedit;wetworookiesthatwereintheborrowedcarwerethewinnersoftherally.Yes,wedidnotfollowtheotherPorschesorgetlosttwicelikethemembersthatbroughtus.
A[ertherallyweheadedtoProsseranddidaliTlemoretas0ngatthewinemall,aswecallit;parkyourcarandstrolltoseveraltas0ngrooms.Wealsopickedupacoupleofcheeseplatesandhadawonderfulcoupleofhours.We hadtocutourtas0ngshort,sinceweneededtoswingbyChukarCherriesbeforewele[town.
Aquickdrivebacktothehotelandwewashedthecarquicklyandthendroveovertotheeventspacewheredinnerwasscheduled.Againthefoodwasfantas0c,andtheInlandNorthwestRegionputtogetherafirstrateevent,withmanydoorprizesandawards.Asalwaysthetalkwasaboutcarsand,well,morecars,soitwasagreatevening.
Sundaywasfun-day.Webrokeofffromthegroupandtookourownquicktriphome.IbelieveGoogleMapshadusatabout4hours(nostops)toarrivehome.Wemadethejourneyinabout9hours.Weranalloverthearea;ittookusover4hourstogetfromRichlandtoPendleton.Itwasanicetriphome.Westoppedseveral0mesandmywifesaidstoppingwithaPorscheislikestoppingwithapuppy.Everyonecomesovertosayhello.Wespokeo[enabouttheclubandinvitedeveryonetocomejoinus!AswewereunpackinginthedrivewaywemetaclubmemberthatlivesaroundthecornerthatcouldnotaTend.DidI shareaboTlethatIboughtontheeventwiththem?Nope!Theirloss.
