230 sq. m public green area per citizen in Gteborg provides manyopportunities but also many challenges.
The opportunities are obvious good variety, many differentpossibilities for recreation, green areas close to housing areas, anattractive city environment etc.
The challenges involve handling maintenance within a limited budget,providing good place keeping in all areas and to decide which areasare most important and have highest priority.
To make best use of the opportunities and to handle thechallenges you need solid and accurate policies and tools forpark planning and decision making.

Strategic park programmeThe park programme outlines5 strategies for the landscapeof Gteborg:
1. Identify and enhance thecharacteristics
2. Make sure that green areas areaccessible and within reach
3. Make sure every place is takencare of (=place keeping)
4. Make places and spacesavailable for the residents to use
5. Create diversified environments
The sociotope concept was inventedto complement the accepted conceptof the biotope (ecologically definedenvironment).
A sociotope map describes thecommon everyday life qualities inopen space and user preference in20 different socio-cultural values.
The map is created throughprofessional valuation and public dialogue (surveys, interviews etc)Sociotope map
Park planThe park plan for a district analyse the existing open space structure and defines objectives and future priorities.
The park plan is based on the strategies in the park programme. Input from local authorities, private partners and the local residents (through the sociotope map) is incorporated in the process.
The park plan gives ideas and guidance for future maintenance, development and budget planning.
Two pilot projects in deprived areas inGteborg Lvgrdet and Eriksbo.
Similar areas in structure public green areas in the center surrounded by denseapartment buildings.
