  • It has been a very busy month for us with both rescues and adoptions. Yet again we have had

to rescue pure breed dogs from the unscrupulous breeders and pets stores in Taiwan. We

continue to urge people to not buy an animal from pet stores and to not even support their

businesses by purchasing pet products from them. If we all rally together and refuse to buy

from their establishments due to the fact that they sell animals, eventually they will have to

    stop.

We know the small breeds we rescued will soon find loving homes as small breeds are very

popular in Taiwan. However, we really do hope that everyone can understand that basically a

dog is a dog, ready to give love and enjoyment to your lives and it doesn’t matter what

package it comes in. The mixed dog is now gaining more popularity but still not enough to

stop the overloading of shelters around the island. The mixed breed of Taiwan is loving,

loyal and beautifully unique. We hope everyone will consider adopting a mix and give them

a chance of a happy loving life.

  • Last year one of our directors/long-time volunteer came

across a lonely malnourished puppy while conducting CNR

(Catch-Neuter-Return). All the dogs in the area had been

neutered and spayed over the year, and yet she had never

seen this puppy before. Because the puppy was new to the

area and couldn’t fit in the dog pack, he kept getting picked on. She knew this little boy

couldn’t survive by himself and so got him to the vet for a check up. Our director is well

aware of our rescue center's situation and so helped find little Bobo a foster home. Bobo has

been at the foster home for just over a year now and is a beautiful young male German

shepherd mix. We have decided to bring him into our rescue center to increase his chances of

adoption and to get more socialized with people and other dogs.

Bobo is about 18 months old. He gets along very well with other dogs and all people. He is

very smart and already knows how to sit on command and also shake hands. He is a great

dog but is a larger size so will need an owner who will exercise him daily to make sure he

doesn't get any pent up energy. He is very good on the leash and calm in noisy situations.

As previously stated we want to yet again plead with everyone of Taiwan to not support the

cruel breeding industry and the money grabbing pet stores who sell animals. They really

have neither love nor compassion where their animals are concerned and our recent 9 rescues

    prove this.

  • We recently attended a pet festival and the organizers of the pet festival have been working

for a long time with various pet stores and breeders to take their unwanted and unsellable

dogs rather than they kill them or dump them in the mountains.

These cruel and vicious pet stores and breeders only want these dogs and cats to bring in

money, and once they stop bringing in money and start to cost money, they will cruelly and

unceremoniously dump them. They have absolutely no concern where these dogs go, just as

long as they no longer have to care for them.

The government at this time still isn’t doing enough to control and monitor these disgusting

breeders and pet stores and so it is left up to the public to stop them. Lack of demand is the

only way to stop the supply. If everyone stops supporting these pet stores which sell animals,

that also means not to buy any products from them, then they will be forced to close down

and the breeders will have to stop breeding. It will mean for a short period of time that there

will be an influx of pure bred animals being dumped, but this will be a good sign that the pet

stores can’t sell them. Until the government steps up and has proper regulations regarding

the pet stores and breeders with regular checks on their facilities, no one should support these

    cruel money-grabbing people.

The power of the people can make a difference in these animals’ lives. If you stop buying,

    they stop dying!

These beautiful little dogs were either dumped because they could no longer breed anymore

or were returned by buyers who hadn’t realized the responsibility of owning an animal, or

they simply couldn’t sell them. Most of them are young, but have issues due to the fact that

they have been starved of love and affection and have been locked in cages for most of their

    lives.

  • Little Lilian was used as a breeding dog until she could breed no more, then she was dumped

on anyone who would take her. She is a lovely sweet little Yorkshire

Terrier, who has never known love and has been left in a cage to

continuously breed puppies, to make money for people who when she no

longer could produce healthy puppies dumped her on the nearest person

who would take her. To show the extent of the lack of care and love Lilian

has received, little Lilian has heartworm and also badly infected and

inflamed ovaries due to over breeding. She is also producing milk, which

means that she very recently had puppies, which have either been wrenched from her or died.

Lilian is a Yorkshire Terrier about 5-6 years old and only 4 kg. She is super friendly and

loves to be near people. She is currently at a foster home receiving treatment for her

heartworm and will be operated on for her inflamed ovaries as soon as she is stable enough.

Chiao is a male Red Poodle of only 6 months old. He is luckily in

good health and has passed all his blood tests.

He yet again was dumped by the pet store as they felt he was too

old to sell and taking up too much space where they could put

more unsuspecting innocent puppies up for sale. He is very playful and friendly. We know

little Chiao will find a loving home quickly.

Cody is a tiny little black male poodle of about 1 year old and only

2.65kg. He is in very good health with no problems. He was not

bought and the pet store felt that he was too old to sell and so decided

to get rid of him. He is another lucky one who escaped from the pet

store just in time. We know this little bundle will find a loving home soon.

Melissa is a Maltese/Poodle about 3 years old and only 3.5kg. She was

either a breeding dog or someone bought her the n returned her after they

  • decided that a dog wasn’t suitable for them. She is a very sweet little girl and luckily very

healthy and has passed all her blood tests. She did have very bad plaque on her teeth which

was cleaned off when she was spayed. While being spayed the vet noticed a lump in her

upper chest area and quickly removed it and sent it for analysis. It has since come back

benign but her new adopter will need to follow up with regular 6 month checkups to make

    sure it doesn’t reoccur.

Yuma is a male Yorkshire Terrier of about 2-3 years old and only

4.25kg. He is in good health and was either returned by an owner to the

pet store or he was used for breeding and then they decided he wasn’t

useful any more. He has passed all his blood tests and is very loveable.

He is a little shy and not sure what to do with all the love and space he has now been given,

but we’re very sure he’ll come out of his shell soon.

Cadbury is a male Chocolate Poodle of about 11 months. He is

currently 4kg and is healthy and a sweet boy. He was returned

by his owner and the pet store noticed that his front leg had

been broken but the previous owners never sought medical

attention and so the front leg has healed itself a little awkwardly. The pet store felt that he

would not be able to be sold again and so would take up space that they want to use for other

pet sales and so dumped him.

He has passed all his blood tests and is very sweet and playful. His front leg causes him to

limp slightly but nothing that inhibits his life.

Jagger is a beautiful sweet Black Poodle of about 1 year old.

He is only 3.8 kg but is a perfect example of the inbreeding

that goes on in Taiwan due to a serious lack of control by the

  • government. His back legs are deformed due to a birth defect due to inbreeding. In all other

respects he is a lively healthy little boy, but he will never be able to walk normally. His back

legs are bent inwards and so he scuttles around. His deformity doesn’t stop him getting

around and he still has a lot of love to give, so we hope someone can look past his disability

and love him for the adorable boy he is.

Charles is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel of about 1-2 years old. He is

currently 7kg. He is a very sweet boy, who just wants to have cuddles and

be loved. It is obvious he has been kept in a cage for most of his life as he’s

not sure what to do with the space he has been given to run around. He is

slowly coming out of his shell and learning that he is now free and will

never be caged again. He was most likely dumped by a breeder as he’s not breeding material

    as he has been inbred.

Billy is a little Bichon Frise of about 1 – 2 years old and only 3.9kg. He

was probably thrown out by the breeder, pet store or owner when he

was found to have an ingrown testicle. He hs since had it removed and

is healthy and lively. He has passed all his blood tests and we know this

little loverboy will find the perfect human.

These are the lucky ones who were saved and we’ll work hard to find them the right homes.

However, there are 100s more just like them or worse that won’t be saved and will be kept in

cages until they day they die or the day they are dumped in the mountains or on a side road.

Please don’t close your eyes to this cruelty, every pet store in Taiwan that sells animals is

contributing to this cruelty, don’t join them!

  • One of our long term vets contacted us for help. One of their vets

had rescued a cat after a hit and run accident. The cat was left in

the middle of the street not able to move. Luckily, it seems that

the cat was just in shock as it had no internal or external injuries

except a slight eye infection which has cleared up. Our vet treated

the cat for a month and observed it to make sure there were no

other complications. He has been neutered, chipped and vaccinated.

We have now brought him into our centre and we are now

socializing him as he has spent all of his life on the streets and is still wary of people. We

have named him Brutus to give him strength. We hope soon, he will trust people more and

become a loving cat and find a loving home.

We received a message from a TNR volunteer who informed us that one of our TNR cats

was at the government shelter and had been there for over three months. We were shocked as

no one from the government shelter had contacted us even though the cat was chipped in our

name. We contacted our TNR volunteers and found where the cat was originally caught from.

We discussed with our volunteers and the cat was taken out from the government shelter and

returned to a safer place where our volunteers could monitor it and make sure it was safe.

We urge anyone who has lost a dog or a cat to make sure you constantly contact the

government shelters as it seems even though a cat or dog is chipped they may not call or

only call once and give up if no one answers.

We were contacted by a supporter about a little

kitten of about 2 months old who looked in

  • distress. Her eyes were all red and inflamed and she seemed in a bad way. We luckily had a

kitten foster home available and so accepted the case. The supporter transported the kitten to

a vet in Danshui and she was diagnosed with cat flu. She was given medication and needed

her face to be cleaned daily. She was at the vet for a couple of days under observation and

then our staff sent to our foster home. She is a beautiful sweet calico kitten who is now

enjoying cuddles and play time. She is recovering well from her flu and has lots of energy.

Unfortunately, as with many kittens on the streets, she has worms and is now being treated

for this. Once she is recovered and healthy enough, she will be vaccinated and ready for

adoption. Her foster parents have named her Cookie.

Parker is a little kitten found by one of our long term volunteers.

Only a couple of weeks old this little darling was unable to feed

himself and would have surely died if left where he was. The mother

was nowhere in sight nor were his siblings. Another of our volunteers

rushed to help and transport the kitten to our vet. Our vet is a 24 hour

vet and so was able to help us feed the kitten every two hours. The

following day we received a call from our vet to ask if one of their

employees could adopt the kitten, we of course agreed. This is probably the fastest rescue to

    adoption we have ever had.

Parker is doing really well now and loving his new mommy.

Late one Sunday night in Yonghe, a friend of one of our volunteers was in a car accident

involving a dog. The dog had run out on to a very busy road and the driver had no time to

react or avoid the dog. The dog went under the car and then ran out from behind causing a

couple of scooter to also fall off their bikes. The dog ran

into some bushes on the side of the road to hide. The driver

  • was shocked, but knew he couldn't just leave the dog like that and so called our volunteer for

help. The dog was obviously in pain and very scared and so did not want to cooperate with

the rescue efforts. He was quite vicious and didn't quite understand that we were trying to

help him. After calling out another of our volunteers, we eventually managed to get him into

a crate and get him to our 24 hour vet in Taipei.

When he was x-rayed it was found that his back leg was broken. Luckily, however, his blood

work was good and so he was able to have an operation after a few days observation. His leg

has now been operated on and a pin inserted into his bone to correct the break. He will need

time to recover but we hope that once he is not in so much pain he will be less aggressive.

One thing we did find very strange was that he had extremely long nails which we don't see

with stray dogs as they are constantly walking around and will naturally file down their nails.

We've only ever seen this with caged dogs that don't ever have the opportunity to walk

around. We believe this dog may have either escaped from a life in a cage or had been

dumped on the streets after spending years in a cage. This might also explain why he ran

head long into traffic as he wouldn't have been familiar with traffic and would have panicked

    at the noises.

He has a long road ahead of him but we hope with lots of love and care this boy will start to

trust people. We have named him Yonghe.

We’ve had a high adoption rate this month and it is mainly due to the rescue of the small

breeds. Still in Taiwan many people prefer to have small dogs, we are super happy that they

  • will all find loving homes, but we also hope that more people will consider to adopt our

wonderful mixed breeds who are just as loving and just as wonderful as any pure breed.

This month we saw two of our doggies flying to their new

    homes in the US.

Dolly found a loving home in the US with a brother who

looks just like her. Thanks to Mary Dolly was quickly

snapped up by a family in the US who just couldn’t resist this

beautiful young lady. She has a wonderful garden to play in

and goes on many hikes in the near mountains.

Nico also flew to his new home this month. We are over the moon that lovely Nico has

finally found his perfect human. Nico has been with us for many years, but as with each and

every one of our dogs we never give up. A volunteer came to help out at the centre and took

a real shine to Nico. She desperately wanted to

adopt him but was unable to. However, she didn’t

give up. She posted photos and videos of Nico

and her good friend fell in love with him. Then

the volunteer especially flew back to Taiwan to

transport Nico to New York and to his furever

home. He is loving the US and has made many

    new furry friends.

Our wonderful little Alaska has finally found a loving home. We were

surprised that it was taking so long for Alaska to find that perfect

home, but we knew eventually the right human would come along.

  • She now lives with a great family and has a little furry friend to play with too.

From our rescues this month, Yuma, Cody and Billy have already found loving homes. We

knew that these little darlings would find loving homes quickly and we had a huge amount of

interest in all of them. However, we always take the time to screen adopters as carefully as

we can to make sure that our dogs are going to loving homes where they will be taken for

walks regularly and never be kept in a cage or on a chain. We are so happy for Yuma, Cody

and Billy and hope all our other little furries will find homes soon.

  • We are extremely grateful to Dog House Grooming parlour for yet again coming out to help

us shave our dogs on their day off. Four wonderful groomers came out on a Sunday to help

us groom our dogs ready for summer, getting rid of their winter fur and cooling them down

    for the hot weather.

Due to the change in weather we have now changed over to our summer schedule. Our

centre will be open as usual from 10am to 4pm Tuesdays to Sundays (we will not be open to

volunteers on Mondays), but our dog walking hours have changed to 10am to 11:30am and

then from 2pm to 4pm. There will be no dog walking between the hours of 11:30am and

2pm as not only is it too hot for them but the road is also far too hot for them to walk on and

can cause burns to their feet. We hope that everyone can respect our changes and work

alongside our staff to make sure our dogs get the best care.

We have some sad news this month as while our director was looking through her facebook

page she noticed that one of our adopters hadn’t posted any photos recently of Belinda the

Beagle that he adopted from us. She sent him a quick message to find out how Belinda was

doing and found out that Belinda had been missing since last November. She was so

distraught as the adopter had never contacted us and the window of opportunity to find

Belinda had closed considerably. We immediately called all shelters in the area and searched

FB pages for her. Unfortunately, until now we still haven’t found her. We pray that she was

taken in and is safe and loved. We won’t give up the search.

  • This month we were lucky enough to be invited to the XinYi Pet Festival a 3 day event

where the promotion of adoption is high on the agenda. It was a very successful event and

we were able to raise over $70,000nt which will be divided up into helping with medical

expenses and also go towards our up and coming move.

We hope more events can be held on this scale to promote proper animals care, pet

    responsibility and of course adoption.

This month we were also lucky enough to be invited yet again to the Taipei American

School Fair which they hold each year. We are very grateful to TAS for the constant support

of our organization and the willingness to promote animals welfare throughout the school

If you would like to hold an event for Animals Taiwan or you have ideas for events or would

even like to join our volunteer list please contact [email protected] for more

    information.

Come and check out our facebook page to keep updated on regular adoptions, events and

    much more.

As always with all our rescues we never put a dog or cat to sleep unless the animal is

suffering greatly with not much chance of recovery. We will always do our best to make sure

every animal is given the best treatment and best opportunity to live a happy and loving life.

We are able to continue these rescues and adoptions thanks to your generosity.

Please continue check out our webpage and pass it on to any friends or family members.

There are always some wonderful dogs up for adoption, so if you have any friends or family

interested in adopting, please show them our website. www.animalstaiwan.org

Remember Adopting saves lives! Please educate those around you to get their animal de-

sexed and micro chipped to help decrease the stray population.
