NRMA INSURANCE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC HAS UPPED THE ANTE WITH HIS PLAYERS GOING INTO THE GAME AGAINST ADELAIDE UNITED.

After wins against Sydney FC last week and Brisbane Roar the week before, Popovic has challenged his men to put three good results together for the first time this season.

It won’t be easy against Adelaide, even with the home-ground advantage. John Kosmina’s team and the Graham Arnold-coached Central Coast Mariners have put a break on the field after just 11 rounds. The Mariners are in first place, on 26 points, and Adelaide second, on 25. Then it’s eight points to third-placed Melbourne Victory, with the Wanderers a further point behind in fourth.

But former Socceroo star Popovic, with his vast experience as a player and his clearly tremendous potential as a coach, knows that if the Wanderers want to be serious contenders for the A-League title they need to be able to push Adelaide to the limit in a game like this.

“We’re taking one step at a time,” Popovic said. “We’re coming off back-to-back wins, and that’s the second time we’ve done that now. But we haven’t had three good results in a row yet, so that is the challenge we face this week. Can we get another good result against a very, very good side in Adelaide? Can we put three good results together, which we are yet to do this year? That’s the challenge.”

The first time the Wanderers won successive games was in rounds four and five - against Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Heart. But the following week they lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle United. Popovic is looking for his players to establish that hard-edged, week-to-week consistency, and not make the mistake of being comfortable with two wins in a row.

Two teams may have jumped out to a lead on the competition table, but the other eight teams are tightly packed, and while a couple of good results in a row can see you make a substantial leap on the standings, two straight losses can send you spiralling.

Now that the Wanderers have had what can be described as their real

breakout game in beating their cross-town rivals 2-0 on the road and in front of a big crowd, it is important to build on that.

The Wanderers dominated Sydney FC, and one of the best things about their back-to-back wins in rounds 10 and 11 is that they did it without Mark Bridge in both games and with Aaron Mooy missing the first of those and only coming off the bench in the second.

Bridge was out injured and Mooy was away on Socceroos duty, but in Mooy’s absence Shinji Ono stepped up to take control of the team and played his best football of the season. Ono’s fitness has improved dramatically after he needed work when he arrived at the club, and he is looking sleek and sharp out on the field. The Japanese superstar is now as dangerous in the closing stages of games as he is at any stage.

ROUND 10 VS bRISbANE ROAR AT PARRAMATTA STADIUM

Marquee man Shinji Ono brought the house down at Parramatta Stadium when he scored his first goal for the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers – clinching another win over champions Brisbane Roar in the process.

Second-half substitute Dino Kresinger was brought down in the penalty box in the 86th minute, and Ono took the spot kick successfully sending the crowd into raptures.

The Wanderers then withstood a desperate late flurry from the Roar before finishing 1-0 winners.

“We’ve been rewarded, finally, I think, for some of the great football we’ve been playing. I’m really happy for the players,” Tony Popovic said.

Youssouf Hersi hit the underside of the crossbar with a cracking shot in the eighth minute, but unfortunately the ball stayed out. Ono shot just wide twice from outside the box, and also had a deflected shot palmed wide by Michael Theo.

Mateo Poljak had a long-distance attempt that narrowly missed, and Iacopo La Rocca put the ball over the top from inside the box.

Brisbane had a couple of good first-half chances as well, but the Wanderers were the better side for the balance of the opening 45 minutes.

With 15 minutes to go in the second half, Kresinger came off the bench, replacing Joey Gibbs, and Ono dropped just behind him.

The move looked like paying off in the 85th minute when Ono collected a pass and brilliantly beat two defenders, only to shoot just wide. But the Wanderers were only one minute away from capitalising on the most dramatic moment of the game – and getting a crucial win.

ROUND 11 VS SYDNEY FC AT ALLIANz STADIUM

The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers secured the second instalment of the Sydney Derby by totally dominating their cross-city rivals in a spectacular display at Allianz Stadium.

The Wanderers scored in the first and second halves to beat Sydney FC 2-0. The Wanderers humbled their rivals in front of one of the loudest and most colourful

football crowds seen in Sydney (26,176).Sydney flew out of the blocks and pressed

the Wanderers early with several wide raids through Brett Emerton but they were unable to produce any meaningful chances.

Wanderers midfielder Iacopo La Rocca made two incisive runs up the middle, one in the 15th minute and the other in the 19th, and they both ended with powerful shots.

Dominance was franked by Hersi in the 23rd when he accepted a cross headed towards him in the box by Joey Gibbs off Sebastian Ryall. The Dutchman trapped the ball, turned and fired a blistering shot into the back of the net.

Ono should have added another two goals with some superb footwork and shooting, only to see his efforts drift wide or over the goal.

The second half continued where the first left off - chances came and went from Hersi, Ono and Gibbs.

Aaron Mooy came on for La Rocco in the 64th minute and Tahj Minniecon on for Hersi in the 72nd.

Sydney introduced injured superstar Alessandro De Piero to a rousing applause in the 69th minute but he contributed little in the one-way Wanderers traffic.

However, a 76-minute corner by Ono made its way back to the Japanese legend and his second cross found his captain Michael Beauchamp on the far post. Beauchamp snapped a powerful shot from close range for the second goal.

Minniecon had two golden chances late with both saved by Vedran Janjetovic. By this stage the Wanderers were running rampant.

NRMA INSURANCE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS GOALKEEPER ANTE COVIC IS PROOF THAT ExPERIENCE COUNTS AND HE’LL bE bANKING ON THOSE YEARS TONIGHT AGAINST A RESILIENT ADELAIDE UNITED.

A veteran of the Hyundai A-League, Covic has been instrumental in the Wanderers inaugural campaign both on and off the pitch.

Covic has topped the ladder for the most saves after 11 weeks with 37 – Melbourne Heart’s equally impressive Clint Bolton just behind.

Joining him with five clean sheets for the season so far is young Central Coast Mariners custodian and last season’s Goalkeeper of the Year Mat Ryan.

Only one sheet off the pace is opposing goalkeeper for Adelaide United Eugene Galekovic.

The former Melbourne Victory shot-stoppers will be key players in tonight’s battle as prime positions on the league ladder start to take shape.

It was this fixture in Week Two at Hindmarsh Stadium that 37-year-old keeper saved a penalty from Adelaide’s playmaker Jeronimo Neumann.

The Argentine made amends for the

missed opportunity to take the lead ten minutes later sending the Wanderers home with their first defeat.

A 2006 World Cup Socceroo, Covic is well-regarded in the football community for his penalty spot stops – so too is his Reds counterpart Galekovic who denied youngster Tyler Boyd in last week’s match against Wellington Phoenix.

Having recently returned to the Hyundai A-League following his Socceroos call-up for the East Asian Cup Qualifiers, Adelaide United captain Galekovic would be on task to ensure his side remains alongside front runners and last season’s Premiers – the Mariners.

The Wanderers would be buoyed by their victory over cross-city rivals Sydney FC in a gallant Derby display on the road last weekend – the win a moment of great significance for players and fans alike.

Covic joined Wanderers supporters in celebration post-match in scenes of jubilation further highlighting his great passion to play for the club.

He credits a strong belief and confidence in the philosophy coach Tony Popovic has developed and implemented.

And it becomes evident that with Covic as our case in point – age is nothing but a number!

GLADESVILLE-HORSNbY CELEbRATE 60 YEARS

In 2012 Gladesville-Hornsby Football Association celebrated 60 years of football in this area. What commenced with an enthusiastic and dedicated group of people back in 1952/1953, looking to find somewhere for themselves and their children to play soccer close to home, has developed into 33 Clubs and 12,700 players in 2012.

Herb Gilmour and his son Keith held a meeting in the Eastwood Town Hall with people that had an interest in soccer and who lived close to the area. With the intention of realising their dream by starting teams in the Epping area, they went into the local schools to recruit players. That year they travelled wherever they could to play a game of soccer. The Association was formed and gradually over the next few years more clubs were formed and local competitions arranged. Keith Hillman went on to serve at State level and was

awarded not only a life membership of Gladesville-Hornsby but also of the NSW Amateur Soccer Association.

Players from Under 6 to Over 45’s now play within the Association, where all standards of players from division one to those grades who allow players to just play for the fun of running around with their mates are catered for. The oldest player this year was 69 years of

age, just proving you are never too old to have fun and enjoy this great sport.

GHFA believe in the development of players and to this end have had 100% grassroots coaches qualified. Their academy is sought after by local players who have come to understand the benefit of additional coaching from highly qualified coaches.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Age 31 Height 191cm Weight 85kgPosition Defender Clubs Central Coast Mariners FC, FC x, Energie Cottbus, Sydney FC, Melbourne Heart FC

The inspirational leader of the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers scored his second career goal to finish his old team Sydney FC in last week’s second instalment of the Sydney Derby.

His size and experience are the major assets he brings to the Wanderers who have the best defensive record in the Hyundai A-League. His understanding with fellow defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley and keeper Ante Covic and their combined presence on the pitch are the equivalent of the Great Wall of China.

“Meggsy” has the ability to stop an opponent in his tracks. No one gets through him or over him and surprisingly few ever get around him. His attacking game is on the improve and the powerful right foot shot from the far post last week will give him enormous confidence.

The Socceroo who started against Serbia in the third match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa is proving to be one of the major success stories in a team full of them. He will need all of his wares against a rampant Adelaide attack and his battle with physical striker Bruce Djite will be mesmerising.

Age 25 Height 185cm Weight 86kgPosition Striker Clubs Adelaide United FC, Genclerbirligi, Diyarbakirspor, Jiangsu Saintly, Gold Coast United FC

The imposing and occasionally awkward striker has a long history in the Hyundai A-League for someone so young. He scored his first goal for Adelaide in 2007 before stints in Turkey and Asia.

The man with African parents who moved to Canberra with his professor father when he was three years of age, came through the NSW Institute of sport program and was considered one of the best young players in the league before he left for overseas in 2008.

After mixed results abroad he came back to Australia to replace Shane Smeltz at the Gold Coast in 2010 and had an up and down year. It is at Adelaide where he plays his best football and although he has only scored one goal so far this season he has proved a handful.

Watch for his pressing runs pushing through the defence and his ability to use his strength to hold up the ball. If he is given space or time with the ball he has ability to let rip with powerful feet. His role tonight will be to upset one of the best defensive centre pairings in the competition and Djite will fancy his chances of crashing through the middle at least once or twice. He can be a menace in close.

ROUND 8 VS SYDNEY FC AT CAMPbELLTOWN STADIUM

Sydney FC scored a comfortable 3-0 win over the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers at Campbelltown Stadium, in the maiden National Youth League encounter between the two sides.

Two first-half strikes set up the win in a match played at good tempo despite the warm conditions in Sydney’s west.

Daniel Petrovski and Alec Urosevski got the Sky Blues on their way, with Urosevski collecting a second midway through the second half to complete the scoring.

The home side were not without their chances and Daniel Barac blazed wide when he had an early sight of goal.

However, it was Sydney FC who opened the scoring, albeit with a small slice of luck. Captain Peter Triantis delivered a well-flighted corner which hit a defender and fell perfectly for Petrovski to gleefully sweep home on the quarter-hour mark.

The Wanderers enjoyed half-chances through James Baldacchino and Zakeriya Elrich, but it was the Sky Blues that soon doubled their advantage.

Urosevski burst past a couple

of would-be tacklers at speed and slotted a neat shot inside the near post to give Sydney FC a somewhat flattering two-goal early advantage.

The scoring was rounded out 20 minutes from time with Urosevski providing a smart far post header after profiting from a perfect run and delivery by Nikola Taneski.

ROUND 9 VS PERTH GLORY AT INTIGA STADIUM

Perth Glory have produced a resounding 5-1 rout of the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers in the National Youth League on Saturday at Intiga Stadium.

Perth and Western Sydney went into the match in third and second bottom on the standings respectively, but the Glory made the gulf between the sides look far greater.

Ryo Nagai staked his claim for a first-team call up when the Japanese star opened the scoring in the fourth minute.

Nagai reminded senior manager Ian Ferguson of his class with a curled a strike from the edge of the 18-yard box into the

top right corner of the Wanderers’ goal.Lewis Italiano made a strong block

at his near post to prevent Labinot Haliti from scoring Western Sydney’s first before Perth went up the other end and Jesse Makarounas delivered a slick left-foot finish to double the lead.

Perth made it three in added time of the first half when Ndumba Makeche ran onto a Ryan Lowry clearing ball, headed to advantage, slipped between two defenders and rolled the ball home past Thomas Manos.

The contest was all over when Perth scored from the restart with Makarounas again involved as he cut the ball back from the by-line to Brandon O’Neill, who buried it from distance with a clean, powerful strike.

Moses Kalau put the icing on Perth’s cake in the 74th minute with a classy finish after Makarounas set him up with another assist.

Barac saved some face for the visitors in the 78th minute when he headed past Italiano.

ROUND 8 VS ADELAIDE UNITED AT CAMPbELLTOWN STADIUM

The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers proved they are serious contenders for a finals position after defeating Adelaide in a convincing 4-0 win at Campbelltown Stadium.

The Wanderers got off to a spectacular start, with Swedish import Louise Fors scoring a goal from a quickly taken free-kick.

The crowd barely finished celebrating the first goal when a pin-point pass delivered from Fors to Servet Uzunlar on the left was followed by a telling cross, clinically finished by Sarah Walsh with a header.

The Wanderers dominated possession and dictated the tempo of the game and at the 15th minute mark the score could have been elevated to 3-0, with the Wanderers failing to capitalise on a well-executed corner delivered by Fors.

The Wanderers goal keeper, Icelander Thora Helgadottir, was rarely tested in the first half, with Adelaide’s only half-chance deriving from a dangerous free kick that soared wide of the crossbar.

The Wanderers first-half dominance was completed in the 40th minute, with Matilda Servet Uzunlar scoring a cracking shot from 27m after being fed a superb through ball from Teigen Allen.

In the second half Adelaide pressed forward and looked more dangerous.

The Wanderers quickly regained their composure and began to push for a fourth goal. This came in the 67 minute, after a fine delivery from Catherine Cannuli was converted by commanding midfielder Fors.

The Wanderers, learning from their previous encounter with the Lady Reds, did not take their foot off the accelerator and comfortably concluded the match.

ROUND 9 VS bRISbANE ROAR FC AT CAMPbELLTOWN STADIUM

Brisbane Roar have proven why they are perennial finalists, soaring into the elusive top two with a narrow win over a tenacious Wanderers side.

Brisbane Roar’s midfield dynamo Vedrana Popovic began to dictate the tempo of the game, with fellow midfielder Katrina Gorry delivering a long range shot that just strayed wide of the post.

Wanderers goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir proved why she was recently named Iceland’s player of the year, being tested on several occasions in the early stages of the game.

Brisbane Roar’s attacking midfielder Tameka Butt tore through the Wanderers defence with her blistering speed before delivering an ambitious long

range shot that sailed over the post.In the 21st minute of the match

Tameka Butt capitalised on a wayward pass and opened the scoring, producing a trademark finish following a through ball delivered by midfielder Popovic.

Teigen Allen responded immediately, attacking with speed down the left side of the field, only to be denied a shot by goalkeeper Joanne Buckley.

Brisbane Roar striker Emily Gielnick scored Brisbane Roar’s second goal of the game in the 26th minute, managing to creep behind the Wanderers defence before lobbying the ball over the advancing Helgadottir.

The Wanderers first clear-cut chance fell to Captain Sarah Walsh in the 37th minute. The striker defeated defender Erika Elze and Buckley, but failed to deliver the desired finish, hitting the post with the goal at her mercy.

A different Wanderers side emerged in the opening minutes of the second half, with the team beginning to dictate play and dominate possession in the final third.

In the 67th minute the Wanderers were awarded a free kick for a late challenge outside the penalty area and Swedish import Louise Fors delivered a clinical free kick, that curled into the top left corner before goalkeeper Buckley even had time to blink.

Teigen Allen was replaced by Linda O’Neill in the 71st minute and midfielder Trudy Camilleri came on for Captain Sarah Walsh Sarah Walsh in the 79th minute with the Wanderers continuing to test a tiring Brisbane Roar defence.

Brisbane Roar defender Laura Alleway was provided with a reprieve from the heat in the 81st minute, being replaced by Ashley Spina.

Wanderers defender Olivia Kennedy was replaced by Jessica Seaman in the 86th minute and Brisbane Roar’s commanding striker Lanah Harch coming on for midfielder Gorry.

This game lived up to all expectations, with both teams proving why they are serious contenders for a finals position.
