Roy Lichtenstein is seen as the second most influential Pop Artist next to Andy Warhol.

Distinctive style

• Lichtenstein adopted a commercial art style, blowing up images from comic strips or showing everyday objects in a comic book style.

• He used bold and bright primary colours, prominent black outlines and patterns of dots to create funny and distinctive popular works.

• The most drastic change in Lichtenstein's career came with his first painting in the style of a comic strip.

• It was a painting of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, called “Hey Mickey”.

Lichtenstein used thick outlines, bold colors and Benday dots to represent colors. Benday is a process where small colored dots are used to create color, similar to Pointillism.

Lichtenstein worked a lot with stencils, producing rows of oversized ben-day dots, that make his paintings look machine made.

He did not want his brush strokes to be seen. He used what he called “The Mechanical Hand”

Ben Day Dots

• The patterns that Lichtenstein used are similar to Pointillism and mimic a process used for printing pictures in comics known as Benday dots

• The Benday dots printing process was invented by the illustrator and printer Benjamin Day 1810 –1889.
