Poodles Past and Present Historically, it's only recently that poodles have had to

endure their bad rap in the public eye.

Ancient Egyptian and Roman artifacts often depict the poodle's ancestors assisting their owners as they bring in game nets, herd a variety of animals or retrieve selected catches from various marshes.

The poodle was originally bred to be a water dog -- retrieving game fowl trapped or shot down by its owners.

For centuries, the poodle's intelligence and personality made it a favorite with gypsies and other travelling performers who trained it to perform all manner of tricks and skits to the delight of paying spectators.  Accounts of famous royal command performances along with stories of amazing street shows are littered throughout the historical record.  Variety shows featuring poodles dressed in all manner of costumes and displaying amazing feats of intelligence, balance and agility became all the rage in the 19th century.

Poodles are of use in a variety of ways through several programs, one is known as American Poodles at Work. These Poodles are bred with a goal to provide assistance in four areas:

Service Dogs aid in mobility-related disabilities. Guide Dogs lead those who are blind or visually impaired around obstacles and stop at elevation changes.Hearing Dogs alert people who are deaf or hearing impaired to important sounds.Social/Therapy Dogs visit nursing homes, schools, and hospitals to provide love and attention to many people.

Purposeful Poodles Have you considered owning a Poodle for Show?Poodles, particularly standards (larger breed), are one of the most challenging breeds to show. They require a lot of coat care and grooming, hours spent on maintenance baths, banding and brushing, then hours spent doing them 'up' for a show and taking them 'down' afterwards. However there are many people all over the world who love looking after the long coats and the presentation that makes a poodle stand out in the ring, and its very rewarding to see the result of your hard work in the finished product of a glorious poodle.

Purposeful Poodles Agility Sports

Poodles are especially suited for agility with their athletic abilities and boundless enthusiasm for playing with their owners. Any size Poodle can compete, as the height the dog jumps depends on their height at the withers. Training and competing in agility creates a unique bond between a Poodle and their owner, as both gain confidence in their ability to negotiate the courses and obstacles.

Agility Sports were first seen at Crufts Dog Show in London, England in 1978 as spectator entertainment between events. It was patterned after equestrian show jumping events and was such a huge success that the sport evolved and became the worlds fastest growing dog sport. The Agility ring allows handler and dog to run full speed, while having to perform accurately and safely on A-Frames, Dog Walks, See-Saws and a wide variety of jumps and tunnels.

The Poodle is considered one breed, with three "varieties" within the breed. Except for the size difference, each variety is identical to the rest. No matter what the size, a Poodle is an intelligent, friendly companion.Poodle sizes, from largest to smallest, are:

Standard. Poodle is over 15 inches at the shoulders' highest point.Miniature. Poodle is 15 inches or less at the shoulders' highest point but measures at least 10 inches.Toy. Poodle stands 10 inches or less at the shoulders' highest point.

The three types of Poodle also have general differences in temperament:A Standard tends to be more aloof and self-contained.A Miniature picks her person and wants to always be with that person. A Mini never lets up; she always wants to do something with her person.A Toy is happy to curl up on your lap and cuddle.

No matter what size you prefer, you're going to get a dog willing to participate in family activities.

On September 17, 1884, a group of twelve dedicated sportsmen, responding to a "meeting call" from Messrs. J. M. Taylor and Elliot Smith, met in the rooms of the Philadelphia Kennel Club in that City.

Each member of the group was a representative or "delegate" from a dog club that had, in the recent past, held a benched dog show or had run field trials. This new "Club of Clubs" was, in fact, The American Kennel Club.In 1920, sanctioned matches were begun. They provided useful training exercises for more formal events and they made dog owners more aware of correct show procedures.

In 1998, as more events type were being made available to fanciers, Agility, Obedience, Tracking and Canine Good Citizen became a separate division within the AKC. The remaining Performance Division consists of Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Lure Coursing, Herding, Earthdog and Coonhound events. Conformation continued to benefit from a steady growth on participation. In that year alone, there were almost 2 million dogs competing in over 15,000 member, licensed and sanctioned events.

When deciding whether or not to show your Poodle, consider the following:

Major Faults Any distinct deviation from the desired characteristics described in the Breed Standard.

Disqualifications Size-- A dog over or under the height limits specified shall be disqualified. Clip-- A dog in any type of clip other than those listed under coat shall be disqualified. Parti-colors-- The coat of a parti-colored dog is not an even solid color at the skin but of two or more colors. Parti-colored dogs shall be disqualified.

Westminster Kennel ClubBrief History

Westminster pre-dates the invention of the light bulb, the automobile, and the zipper; the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Washington Monument; and manned air flight and the establishment of the World Series.

Since Westminster held its first show 127 years ago, there have been 24 men elected president and 12 states have joined the union. 

Westminster even pre-dates the establishment of the governing body of the sport, the American Kennel Club, by seven years. In fact, in 1877, members of Westminster and members of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia had together adopted a set of show rules and regulations and established a Board of Appeals to oversee these rules. This was the precursor of the American Kennel Club, which was finally created in 1884. 

The most-coveted award in the dog show world, Best In Show at Westminster, was given for the first time in 1907.

Westminster Kennel ClubShow Quality

The basic purpose of dog shows is to facilitate the evaluation of breeding stock for use in producing the next generations. The WKC uses the following format for judging.

Each breed's parent club creates a STANDARD, a written description of the ideal specimen of that breed. Generally relating form to function, i.e., the original function that the dog was bred to perform, most standards describe general appearance, movement, temperament, and specific physical traits such as height and weight, coat, colors, eye color and shape, ear shape and placement, feet, tail, and more.

Some standards can be very specific, some can be rather general and leave much room for individual interpretation by judges. This results in the sport's subjective basis: one judge, applying his or her interpretation of the standard, giving his or her opinion of the best dog on that particular day. Standards are written, maintained and owned by the parent clubs of each

breed.
