“Proclaiming the Gospel!” “Living In Christ!” “Caring for Our Neighbors!”
Pontoppidan Lutheran Church-2011 Year Of Invitation
PONT’S PONDERINGS
Barnabas: an Encourager
We meet Barnabas first in chapter 4 of the New Testament's Acts of the Apostles and then repeatedly in later chapters, as the story of Acts unfolds. He was a Jewish Levite (assistant to the priests) of Cyprus and became one of the earliest Christian disciples at Jerusalem. His original name was Joseph, but he was renamed Barnabas by the Apostles because Luke interpreted the word Barnabas as son of encouragement.
Barnabas: an Introducer
Barnabas introduced Paul to the Apostles in Jerusalem after Paul's conversion and was sent by them to inquire into the situation at Antioch. There Christianity was being preached to Gentiles on a new scale. Having approved the Antioch situation, Barnabas fetched Paul from Tarsus to help him in the first missionary journey, beginning with Cyprus.
Barnabas: a Defender
At the Council at Jerusalem, Barnabas defended the claims of the Gentile Christians, and later he returned to Antioch with Paul. Owing to a dispute with Paul over John and Mark, they parted company, and Barnabas sailed for Cyprus. He probably continued to travel widely, as later Paul mentions him as if he were known to the Galatians, the Corinthians, and possibly the Colossians.
Barnabas: a Giver
In the early church there was much sharing and caring. Barnabas was highlighted as one who was a generous giver. He sold a field he owned and gave the proceeds to the apostles.
October 2 is Barnabas Sunday. We are encouraged to give an extra significant gift on
this Sunday to strengthen the ongoing ministry of Pontoppidan.
We are encouraged to double or triple our normal Sunday offering.
Cheerfully give a Barnabas kind of gift on Barnabas Sunday, October 2.

CARING FOR OUR NEIGHBORS
October is the month we hear and see our younger generation
participating in the familiar “trick or treat.” Let’s open our hearts
and place our treats of non-perishable food items in the “CART” for
“Churches United for the Homeless.”
It is also the month we will be shipping our quilts, school kits and
soap to L.W.R. It is not too late to donate some more bath size bars
of soap - the basket by the church office has been empty for
sometime.
It is also time to plan ahead for your gift to the Thank Offering in
November.
Please pray with me:
“Dear Lord, often I do not hear the silent cries for help of those
around me. Quiet me and make me more aware of those who are
hurting.” Amen.

WELCA NEWS:
To all ladies of Pontoppidan,
You are invited to our October 4th meeting at 7:00 pm in the living
room. The speaker will be the Chaplain of Ministry in the Cass
County Jail, Mike Sonju. He will be speaking to us about his
experiences working with inmates. He has expressed a need for
winter coats for men and women who are leaving jail without warm
clothes. Please consider donating any that you may have and are not
using for this cause. We look forward to an interesting evening and
fellowship to follow the program.
